I think there are some interesting issues to explore here, especially with the almost ingrained domination mentality that goes along with penetration.
You'd assume that it was primarily a fixture of straight society or homophobes, but there's still a very real association with masculinity and topping in the gay community- hell, even Dan Savage has been very vocal in the past about being a top, a position that he's also stated puts someone "in control".
And maybe it's just my friends, but it seems like it's still incredibly taboo to ask any of them (whom you're not about to fuck) if they're a top or a bottom.

For the record, I like it both ways- I started out a bottom in high school, but in college learned to enjoy both (and now look for a mate that feels the same way). There's nothing I find more irritating then a guy who is top only.
