I don't understand their ad - I don't remember being taught about marriages or partnerships at all in school, straight or gay...?
2
I think they're pissed about all the money they lost on shipping costs way back when ...
3
wait. dominic - can you xplain again why this is legal? really don't get it.
it totally sucks.
4
Dominic, just for your future reference, a 501(c)3 like Focus on the Family cannot endorse candidates, but can advocate for ballot initiatives and issues as long as it spends no more than 5% of its budget doing so.
5
Slog ran a story with pro-gay marriage forces in Maine bragging about how much out of state money they had collected and what a great thing that was...
do you remember that one,
Dom,
you hypocritical hysterical pussy?
6
Oh wait, this is a PAC, not a 501(c)3. They can blow their wad on advocacy however they like.
7
Hey Rain,
Usually, 'our' side tries to tell the truth, so, in-state, out-of-state, we're not lying sacks-o-shit.
This crap is pure and utter bullshit from the most evil of them all, James Dobson and crew.
8
It's true: you homos want to replace the kindergarten curriculum with wall-to-wall gay porn. Loveschild told me so.
9
Why don't they understand that if they have to lie to make their case, then maybe their case isn't worth making?

Also, if you oppose a bill, but have nothing relevant to say about what's actually in the bill, then maybe you shouldn't oppose it. If you oppose domestic partner benefits, create mailers that at least tangentially involve domestic partner benefits.

R-71 isn't about schools, and has no mention of what schools teach. And is the religious right really implying that learning of the existence of gay marriage will somehow turn kids gay? Is that what is so scary about kids learning about gay marriage?

The many ways in which this advertisement is stupid, are simply mind blowing.
10
i heard that they were going to make 5th grader boys give blow jobs in the bathroom at pony before they would be able to go on to middle school if 71 passed. just saying.
11
Welcome to California style politics...the Mormons and Catholics spent up to 60 million to defeat Prop 8. These right wingers are pumped..it is their last stand. Marraige equality will happen..they raise dough by demonizing us.... we are phoning to help. Hopefully enough thinking folks will vote with us....
12
Pro-71 organizations should just run ads saying that if it passes, everyone will get a thousand dollars. I mean, since lying is apparently okay and all, why not?
13
It should say, "Today they'll learn about musicals." That would make much more sense.
14
Rain, if I recall correctly, that article was actually about the fact that pro-marriage equality supporters had far more in-state support than anti-marriage equality supporters. I know, I know, being an anonymous troll is way easier than reading and thinking :/
15
I think it's time to mail and call all our state senators and reps to start pushing for a new law that will simply ban out of state contributions to local state election affairs.

I can't see how that would come up against any sorts of 1st Amendment issues, since you, states rights. This shit is absurd.
16
I know it feels like consolation now, but remember, the anti-gays will be remembered as being the side of the prejudiced and outdated in the future.
They won't be remembered as martyrs losing a just cause, but rather as the stubborn, the homophobes, the lost.

The KKK thought they'd be remembered as vigilantes, bravely standing up for what others were afraid to do... how wrong they were. It will be the same with the anti-gay protesters. They'll be remembered in embarassment rather than bravery.
17
"Today we learn about music. Will tomorrow's lesson be about sex between girls and boys?"
19
Wow! Schools still have music curriculum?
20
@19, No, you're right. The Republicans fought down all the tax levies that fund schools because they hate learning and children.

Good catch B Strand.
21
@19: My elementary school music curriculum consisted of hitting wood blocks together in time to disco songs.

I don't think it costs much to fund that sort of thing.
22
@11, Isn't FOTF from SoCal originally, and they moved to Colorado? Like so many other socals and nocals who move and bring their nonsense to other parts of the west, FOTF is exhibit 1a why they should be mocked and scorned. Not only does Cali give us religious zelots, they give us gang-bangers too. Yippeeeeeeee.
23
See, now I want the children of Focus on the Family contributors to be taught homosexual techniques in kindergarten. Let them learn of santorum, and to eat lots of fiber and maintain good hygiene to avoid it.
24
I'm so glad there is only a week to go, because this is seriously making my blood pressure go into the danger zone.
25
#24

my good friend and I were on the same thought.

oh, god, help us to endure this last week.

And good planning will include a grand party drunk and stoner evening if we win.

or, mercy fuck if we loose.

is that good sexual stuff Dan? it beats crying all night.
26
Do I want my kids or grandkids to be taught about gay partnerships? Um, yeah. God willing, the public schools will still be bastions of offensive ideals like civil rights, equality and tolerance for generations to come.
27
So why does "Focus on the Family" hate marriage?

Glad to say I mailed my ballot in support of R-71, even though it cost me more than $2 and I'm not sure it will even arrive in time from West Africa and I had to endure the evil Poste women yelling at me in French, but come what may I was going to mail that ballot!
28
Mailer exposes Christians as lying pieces of garbage. Oh, wait. I am not shocked.
29
@7
Hey chicky,
Our side tells the truth, so, in-state, out-of-state, we're not lying sacks-o-shit.
Your crap is pure and utter bullshit from the most evil of them all, Dan Savage and crew.

30
11
you're wrong.
the queers outspent the pro-Prop 8 side-
and still lost.
your money won't save you this time either...
31
@14
Will you please provide a link to the article?
32
Well obviously we aren't going to teach about relationships in kindergarten. We're going to start with anal sex and the best way to give head in the primary years. Relationships will wait until Jr High
33
We can counter this last minute money dump by the out of state radical right. 1) Speak to everybody you know about the importance of mailing in their ballot with the Approve 71 bubble filled in. 2) Volunteer at a phone bank, write a letter to the editor, go door to door with the Approve 71 Campaign this weekend. 3) Make a donation to the Approve 71 campaign. Small donations from large numbers of people can counter the out of state money being poured in by Focus on the Family.

34
To the conservative trolling this discussion, care to comment on the ad itself and its nonsense?

Ah, no, because that would be directly addressing the logical holes in the argument...Sorry I asked!
36
Dom, for one, won't be phone banking for Referendum 71... He's too busy talking shit to grassroots activists and cruising for dick on Adam4Adam. So, when he speaks on political issues, he REALLY knows what he's talking about.
37
@36

Interestingly, DH, I think the only way you'd know about Dominic's Adam4Adam adventures is if you'd seen him on there yourself.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...
38
How about boycotting the radio stations that run the commercials?

39
Seriously, though. What do the phobes really think would go on in classes? Do they really think anyone will be "teaching kids about" gay relationships? If they do think this, they're crazy.

Or do they think that kids will see examples now and then—in books, in their worksheets, etc.—of two men or two women together, and not always a mommy and a daddy? If that were to happen, so what?
40
34
There's an ad?!
41
As an early-childhood music specialist and music teacher......well.......imagine how ads like that one resonate.

ALL TEACHERS put their heart and souls (and ridiculous amounts of time and often their own money) into working effectively with this age-group; it's not just punching in - it is nurturing, love, child care, social work, and education, etc.....

But the LGBTQ teachers of America feel an extra nasty sting when we are assaulted with these sick sick ads.
42
I actually prefer the Baptist style "god hates fags" style stuff more than this totally weenie, "oh won't somebody think of the children" style BS.

If there really is a Hell (and there IS NOT!) the men who sink to this level of lies will be sucking cocks in it...well, except for Haggard. He'll be heroically muching box and pretending he likes it just like he is right now.

My guess is that there are a lot of people who are involved in Christian mythology who actually believe that load of crap (though, obviously, anyone with two brain cells to rub toghether can point out the myriad logical inconsistencies with the text itself and the way that Xtians live that text) about the homos going to Hell...and naturally a healthy percentage of them are gay...and naturally, if it were legal for some of these dudes to smoke the pole that they crave so badly (and appearantly get on the 'low down' once in a while) in an honest, open, and commited relationship, then their chances of going to Hell would be that much greater because the barrier of Man's law would not stand in the way of them damning themselves. So to all of you FotF'ers out there, all I can say is this: Honey, we are working for you just as hard as we can so that you can stuff that cock everywhere you need it. We are doing it because we love you.

So yeah, marriage bigots are basically closeted nob-gobblers.

**I used only male gender here because I assume that the little women who work on these campaigns don't do anything their sissy-boy husbands don't want them to.
43
#38 "How about boycotting the radio stations that run the commercials?"

You can file complaints with the FTC about the false content.
44
@14
no link?
45
I'm with #15: ban all out-of-state contributions to Washington elections, period.

If Mormon funding on Prop 8 had been limited to what they could raise within California, the finances would have been very different...
46
It's infuriating that any minority must petition the majority for its civil rights. Who thought up this strategy? The good ol' Hands Off Washington crew with their disastrous Initiative 677 in 1997, and now E. Murray, J. Pedersen, et al. Murray and Pedersen are good men, but damn fools for buying into this notion that we should seek legitimacy and basic rights from the bigot class. They're tacticians, not visionaries.

Lemme tell you -- it's worse if we win tomorrow, if R-71 passes, because then the judiciary will say "see ya later (cock)suckers, you obviously don't need our help anymore since you have enough political clout to get civil rights for Domestic Partners." This is what the Supremes said in killing gay marriage by 5-4 in 2006.

So THEN how we supposed ta get marriage? Ask the electorate again? You shitting me?? They will never go for gay marriage, and as for any other additional civil rights for single GLBTs -- expect to raise millions and slog through the electoral process. This is what "our leaders" have us up for.

And I understand - they're the elected ones. But that doesn't make them leaders. This is America! Civil rights are civil rights. Rights that are granted by the electorate can be rescinded or compromised by the electorate. That's why the argument must be settled by the indelible constitution. Where's a leader with vision? Where's our Harvey Milk?
48
#28, please dont hate all christians, i am Roman Catholic, and fully support complete equality. Not all of us are closed minded, some of us are just too locked into an outdated mindset.

Please wait...
