How wonderful your hometown team's doing one!
2
I'm probably late here, but is anyone working on the Mariners, or is the idea to have people come around on their own? Just saying.
3
There's a petition on change.org for the Mariners to record an "It Gets Better" video. It's getting a lot of signatures today.

If it's a smidgen of consolation Dan: My mom, a lifelong Cub fan, who voted for Goldwater in '64 but came around to vote for Obama in '08, will be around to see it. And so will other mothers like mine, and I suspect yours too. Here's to her.

Thanks, Joe. xxxooo

There's a petition for the Mariners to make one at Change.org. They mass-emailed me about it this morning.

Gern, you beat me to it!
8
unfortunately, it doesn't get better if you are a cubs fan hoping for a good team to one day take the field.

As I said after the Giants did theirs, I don't have high hopes for the Mariners doing one as they are "the most don't-rock-the-boat-even-with-say-trying-to-be-successful-at-baseball team ever." But I signed the petition anyway!

FYI, Laura Ricketts - the co-owner mentioned in the article - is openly lesbian and a board member of Lambda Legal.

(Yikes, sorry for the double-post.)

Hey-oh, Cubbies!
@8: Too right, mate. The last game I went to, a few weeks back, was against the Rockies, and the Cubs let up four runs on as many errors in the first half of the game, pretty much dooming them. Even Kosuke Fukudome going 5-for-5 at the plate didn't drag them out of that hole.
14
Mariners might still be too busy trying to eject same-sex kissers from the stands.
15
I would far rather see the Gay Pride flag fly from on high at a Mariners game.

Sweet counterpoint to the Space Needle.

First, I want to make clear that I think the IGB campaign is one of the best things to hit the LGBT community in decades. Seriously.

Having said that, I don't think we should pressure organizations (like sports teams) to make IGB videos. They shouldn't be guilted into it, doing it only because they want to look politically correct. If we do that, we'll end up with tacky half-hearted watered-down messages of appeasement. No thanks.
17
Somebody needs to start a petition to have Dan Savage sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch of a Cubs game.
18
It would be a better argument if there was a single MLB player out as gay. Glenn Burke was the first and only gay player to be out during his career.

Dan, every time I hear about the progress of the IGBP and the accolades that it and its founders (you and Terry) are getting - I always have a bittersweet moment when I wish that your mom (and Terry's dad) were both still around to share in this accomplishment, and see the life-saving and life-changing movement that each of their sons were able to bring into being.

I was saying something to this effect to a co-worker today, and further remarked that the "It Gets Better Project" has the spirit of Judith all over it - and that it is her legacy as much as it is yours. Anyone who has read or heard stories about your mom can clearly see her stamp on the project that was launched by her son and son-in-law.

18 posts and no "...unless you're the Chicago Cubs" jokes?
21
i has my doubts. if they fought so hard to prevent a titty bar from opening, they prolly won't do a IGBP video for fear of offending their mostly conservative fans. i mean, wasn't there some controversy years ago when a LGBT group had their names flashed on the diamond vision screen?
22
Fucking Cubs. Every Cubs fan I've ever met has been more likely to be the bully than the bullied. But hey, good on them, I guess. Even better if they can do it without being all "woe is us."

Regarding gay baseball players, does anyone know how the rumors about NL MVP Joey Votto got started? It seemed like suddenly everyone just thought so, and Joey, if you're reading, I have not met a single person who cares.
23
@17: sing? Hell, I think Dan should be pressed into playing that Wrigley organ, too.
24
@16 I feel the same way. I would rather a team comes around on their own. It gives the effort a certain authenticity. On the other hand the more teams that do it, the more kids that see it, and an overall positive effect could occur regardless of how they came to the decision to make a video.
25
Dan, my late really great brother died the day after your mom so I always think of her when I'm remembering him. Even though I never met your mom. And I wasn't given the opportunity to meet you. Doesn't make any sense, but there it is.

Yeah, your mom would be really proud.
26
@22 I'm right there with you. I live in Chicago and the "fans" are some of the most obnoxious I have ever had to deal with. I have always noticed a hostile tone toward gays there, and thought it was odd, since the largest gay area in Chicago is only blocks away. If you bring that up to a cub fan, they treat it like a source of shame. But, since they are terrible and the stadium is half empty for games, you can't blame the Ricketts' for trying to get people to come out, no pun intended, to the park. Good for them, but they have a huge chumpy hurdle to get over with the fans.
27
That's great, other sports should really start jumping on this too. Just like having macho figures promoting light beer worked in the past, having athletes on all levels supporting this will help the mainstream image.
28
gcm, I feel your pain.
29
Maybe the obnoxiousness and homophobia of the fans is as good of a reason as any for the Cubs to come out and say that "It Gets Better." I'm from Wisconsin originally, and frankly, if the Packers did an "It Gets Better" video, the entire state of Wisconsin would immediately join PFLAG.

Please wait...
