I don't buy his argument that this is because of the Iowa straw poll. Coming in third behind two fringe candidates who cannot win nationally is not reason enough to quit.
Is there a way you could indicate that links you've posted are to the NYT site? As someone who is still living behind the 20 articles a month wall, it would be great to know so I can assess whether or not I want to click on your link and use one of my articles? Thanks!
I think Rick Perry joining the race affected Pawlenty's decision, too. Pawlenty was pushing his executive, work-with-the-other-side credentials, but Perry can boast the same thing, and in a more charismatic way.
I'm sad to see him go. Pawlenty was sane, intelligent and relatively moderate... he'd have been something like a less charismatic Bush I. Unfortunate, but not horrifying.
He's the instant frontrunner for VP-elect. Most of the rest of those fools have other jobs to go back to.
I think the role of comparatively sane VP handler is between Pawlenty and Huntsman, the rest are too fucking stupid to see that they can't win, or see that running for president is the job (Gingerich, Palin).
Like it or not, a presidential campaign now requires hundreds of millions of dollars. T-Paw couldn't generate enough interest to bring in donations. End of campaign.
I'm sure it was about the money. It was going to be increasingly difficult for Pawlenty to raise money. He had worked pretty hard for the straw poll. His poor showing demonstrated that he just wasn't connecting with voters.
Yet to be determined: can Bachmann knock off either Romney or Perry the way she dispatched Pawlenty? My guess is that neither Romney or Perry will attempt to take her on directly.
@9, or if your cursor is like mine and doesn't give the link when you hover over it, right click the link and select "properties." I would prefer that Dan do that too (and in fact he often does), but he's pretty busy. Also, you do know that you can get all the articles you want in the NYTimes by deleting all of the portion of the URL after "html," right?
Danny,
Santorum has been going about Iowa taking credit for the recall of the judges who approved homosexual marriage.
Are you going to let him get away with that?
He came in 3rd. He placed higher than Romney. So he came in behind dead eyed Bachmann and RuPaul, that's not that bad. He came in 3rd!! In a state where no one knows who the hell he is, 3rd is pretty fucking good. There has to be something more to this--gay biracial love child?
I can't believe T Paw is out, and frothy fecal matter is still in.

@6: Hover your cursor over the link and you will see the URL in the status bar and therefore see where it will go to.

T.Paw? Did not buy it.

your boy Rick came in better that expected in Iowa and with Pawlenty out moves up to third!

No glory.

Yes, he placed higher than Romney, but Romney wasn't competing in the straw poll. Pawlenty needed a win and he didn't get it.
