so do i have to constantly refresh it then?
2
@ 1, yep.
3
Some sort of blather about a Homeland Security alert on NBC...
4
gotta say i like the other format.
5
Howdy spepiolida:

We figured the commentary wouldn't be as hot and heavy as during the Republican debates, so Cover It Live might be unnecessary. Do let us know what you think at the end, though. It's a learning process!
6
the way president obama says "thank you" cracks me up.
7
this live slog sucks! Pleeeeeease change it back!!
8
Well, at the beginning, I think this new format sucks. I'm a bi-partisan snark provider! But maybe I'll actually watch this speech and reserve my final judgment til the end, as Paul suggests.
9
Is Boehner checking out Obama's ass?
10
"Washington hasn't always put [working families] first."

Christ, Washington hasn't put them first for 30 years.
11
This format sucks
12
Mitch McConnel looks like a sad little turtle.
13
my browser never lets me see stuff after the jump - all i can see are Constant's comments. i have no choice but to go back to working on billable things. boo.
14
@11, that liveblog thingy costs money. Keck's got a boat payment due this week, so suck it up.
15
This is 'merica and every child deserves to be modernized. bleep bloop beep.
16
that texas republican and a mass dem line gave me a big boehner.
17
yay, moar child labor for the kids building ladders...
18
@14: CiL doesn't cost money. Honestly, we're just trying different stuff out and seeing what works. I'm noting your protests, but we can't start up a liveblog in the middle of this speech.
19
I feel so left out. So many smartass things to say and no one to share them with!
20
how do I get the satisfaction of having my witty comments posted on liveslog???
21
Is it normal that he gets so many standing ovations, or is it like Catholic church, where you just kind of have to?
22
my ustream lagged at such a point that I think I know what Obama would look like as he prepared to give a blow job. Mmmm mmmm.
23
@18, not to get meta, but I wasn't bothered, I was poking fun at 11 seeming to be. Thanks for caring tho.
24
warren buffet is like OBL.... think about it. pon raul sayz.
25
whoo, patent reform! I was hoping to hear that.
26
@ 21, it's normal.
27
About this "Made in America" bit... I find it funny because Fox News just today published an article claiming that Obama was deliberately trying to derail that. Let me find it...
28
@23: D'oh! Everything is moving so quickly I don't have time to register fun-poking. Sorry.

@21: This kind of applause is pretty normal for this kind of thing. It's weird.
30
Obama is KILLING IT in this speech! Maybe it's because I'm watching and not being an online asshole throughout it, but I think this is a very effective speech. So I imagine the talking heads on tv are getting ready to tell me how much it sucked.
31
Michelle looks like she's falling asleep. Or bored to death. Do you think he talks like this at the dinner table all the time?
32
Biden is like the bass drum. His part is simple, but focus and commitment are key. Nod. Nod fervently. Nod. Nod fervently. Nod and Clap.
33
Lift every voice? Is that a dog whistle to his supporters in the Black church?
34
While you guys were looking one way, the Congress just usurped the Constitution and rewrote the patent process into a system of private taxation.

Senate Passes Biggest Overhaul of Patent System Since 1952

35
Oh, Sweet Jeebus! Now NBC is talking about the lovely lightning show that is going on in DC right now. Happy news for happy people!
36
yeah, it was pretty o.k., kinda needed more applause for executions tho.
37
@34

Equating higher patent fees to "private taxation" is a pretty laughable stretch.
38
Well, that was rousing. I'm wondering how Republicans will spin this into an example of the anti-Americanism that's driving the country into the toilet? Oh well, I'm sure they'll find a way.
39
@34: Did the patent office reject your Sad Bachelor brand one-person microwave again?
40
Where the hell was this speechwriter for three years? Glad to see Obama finally breaking it down to simple talking points. He's usually way too cerebral for most Americans, but this was perfect. Time to bring back Bush-era drinking games for all this new repetition of buzzwords and key phrases.
41
O/T: 4th District just tossed out the Cuccinelli (& McKenna, et al) challenge to O'care.
42
@40 I drank every time he said "America" but I thought that was low hanging fruit.
43
+1 for the new live slog format. i didn't have any interest in watching the speech, but it was fun to read the commentary afterwards without waiting for the damn thing to load.
44
#37, 39

Dudes. Haven't you noticed the grade curve going up and up here on SLOG...sorry if "your best" comments now only rate a Gentleman's C.
45
re: the new format, I think it's pretty good for something short, like this, where more people will be willing to read it after the fact, like @43. It was a bit of a hassle, but still, I commented, which I never do with live slogs, so yay for me. Thanks, Paul!
46
I like Obama, and I hope the jobs plan is passed. As for the speech, saying "pass this bill right away" over and over irritated me eventually. Also, Obama's delivery sounded not quite sincere to me, which I've never felt before.
47
There is no way in hell he's gonna get this thing passed. First, it's not "paid for." Second, it repeals the Bush tax cuts. And finally, nobody has any guarantees that this money will create any real job growth. Good speech; lousy plan. It's dead in the water.
48
Boy, the teleprompter was really cooking tonight!
49
@48: I'm sure you know he actually ad-libbed a few bits.
50
yeah, and what is up with that darned teleprompter leaving out all the juicy bits about the evil autistic risks of vaccines??
51
Matt from Denver @29, thanks for the link. It's an interesting story, unfortunately marred by their disingenuous paranoia. Since when does Fox News give a damn about keeping jobs in America?
52
@ bailo : you can finally make your millions on that jump to conclusions mat idea of yours.
53
Unfortunately, the Joint Committee has 6 Republicans on it who have--as Obama noted--sworn to not raise taxes. That means not lifting tax exemptions from corporations, because that would be considered new taxation. This is not going to be a big win for the Dems, it is only a repeat of what was done 2 years ago and didn't work, and it will only give the Republicans more ammunition about big-spending government.
54
I just don't give a rat's ass what Obama says in a speech.
55
Paul Constant didn't actually deny that Tim Keck has a boat payment due.
56
"It's the Pass This Jobs Bill Jobs Bill!"

..... but other than that, when do we find out what it is? Is it like O'Bama care (only shorter)? Do we have to pass it to find out what it requires?

sigh.....
57
O/T: Correction: Not the same suit at all.

Please wait...
