You mean they were (gasp!) living in sin?!? What would the Pope say?
2
Since Mr. Santorum informs us that no one has any right to privacy, all details of this kinky relationship are fair game.
3
I dunno if I could achieve tumescence seeing the vulva, et al of a woman I saw COME OUT of a birth canal. Respek.
4
So what? I thought Savage of all people would not be a bigot when it comes to May-December romances. Nothing freaky here, except cherry picked outrage based on politics.
5
I just saw the doctor's picture on the 2nd page of the article. No wonder she fell for him. He looks like the Dos Equis Most Interesting Man in the World.

"I don't always fuck women, but when I do, I prefer them 40 years younger than me."

6
@4 I think the so what is the raging hypocrisy.
8
I wish I knew more about psychology. The fucking puritanical scolding control-freaks are clearly more fucked up than the rest of us. Probably something to do with guilt, shame, and a massive disconnect between their emotional reality, and their received ideology.

No wonder Ricky is all about sex-only-for-procreation. The Mrs. probably hasn't had a libido since she guiltily tore herself away from her grandpa doctor fetish.

Hell: it's not in the afterlife, some live in it now.
9
@4. Is Superfreak a negative? If "freak" means to do something that is a human rarity, I'd say hooking up with someone 40 yrs senior is freaking rare, and a six year relationship with that big an age gap is super-rare. What ARE the odds?
10
@ 4, hypocrisy is always outrageous. You don't get to sow your wild oats and then insist no one else get to do the same.
11
And beyond that. Going from abortion provider to Santorum who brings home dead baby for the night is just fucking freaky.
12
well if danny wouldn't do it no one should....
13
Why is this news? Why do you care?
15
a sugar daddy beats pell grants any day......
16
@5 - Even with the age gap and birth delivery, that doctor was way more attractive, physically and personality, in his 60s-70s than Rick Santorum ever was.
17
So she was shacking up with a good-looking, older doctor, and then settled for Santorum? Really? Must have been something dramatic happened!
18
14

an idle mind is the devil's workshop....
19
Robbing the cradle?

Robbing the womb. Literally.
20
OK, she's now in a relationship in which her mate is hardcore anti-abortion, but her previous partner was not only pro-choice, but that's part of what he did for a living.

I get it, but I don't think people are gonna care. Geez, you can't get people interested/excited on how much a candidate's position alters before he or she gets elected - good luck getting them to seriously scrutinize the "evolving" view their partners have.
21
Shit, the spanking must have literally started from day one.
22
And of course, Santorum, who would deny women abortions when their life is threatened by pregnancy, agreed to his wife having an abortion when her life was threatened if the pregnancy had continued.

That "miscarried" baby, they brought home to their children, died because the Santorums agreed to an induced birth at 20 weeks, when it would be impossible for it to survive.

A "partial birth abortion" Santorum would deny any other woman who needed one to survive.

Can you imagine the outrage from the right wing, if Michelle Obama had lived with an abortionist before marrying? Or had been forced to have a life-saving abortion herself?

Santorum would be on Fox News 24/7 calling her a baby-killing bitch.
23
@14:

I have no info regarding your question, but the author of the article drops a tantilizing hint (emphasis added):
Around that time, she met her future husband when he recruited her as a summer intern for his law firm; he too hadn’t been much of a practicing Catholic, but that changed soon after they married in 1990.
24
A certain percentage of people become more conservative and traditional after they get married/as they age, news at eleven...
25
Ricky's wife is an abortion slut?
26
I am not sure that this is really supportive of the cause. The radical christians love reformed sinners. The bad boys/girls always seem to be pedestal.
27
@4: "Nothing freaky here"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xECUrlnXC…

She had NON-PROCREATIVE SEX and used contraception, and dated a filthy liberal abortionist.

What's good for the Santorums is "destroying" America, according to the lubester.
28
@23: "Around that time, she met her future husband when he recruited her as a summer intern for his law firm; he too hadn’t been much of a practicing Catholic, but that changed soon after they married in 1990."

This is why you should fuck before marriage. I wonder if she knew what she was getting herself into...
29
Some analytical overreach, if I may:

So, this woman is currently married to a guy who has devoted his life to criminalizing abortions, gay sex, and pretty much anything other than man-on-top-get-it-over-with-for-the-sake-of-making-a-baby sex--to the point where he wants to enforce sodomy laws and ban birth control. Such men are typically running from some serious sexual demons, hence the paranoid and obsessive need to police the sex lives of others. Always a safe bet.

But... prior to him, she was living out of wedlock with a man 40 years her senior who devoted his life to protecting women's reproductive rights?

To me, the way to resolve this seeming contradiction or hypocrisy is to consider that maybe this woman too has sexual demons of her own because pursuit of either of these men would mean she could avoid sex.

Wild speculation, I admit, but that's what I would guess.
30
Umm this is really pointless, we all knew that no woman worth a continental damn would have married the stupid fucker.
31
"continental damn?" I am totally stealing this.
32
Parks and Recreation, anyone?
33
i'm so still stuck at the' having sex with the doctor who delivered her part' .. wondering what her mom thought of it
34
Timeline: 1-Date the HOT HOT abortion Dr, who was probably the best sex she's ever had. 2-Get saved and come to Jeebus. 3-Date and marry the closet case who has reproductive sex while thinking of luggage lifters. Who says Jeebus doesn't make life better?
She traded that hottie in for santorum? Now that is disgusting.
35
I'm seriously disappointed to see Dan make a comment against intergenerational relationships. They are part of gay culture and history, along with those that cross class lines. Maybe my perspective is skewed because my mother and my sister each married men 30 years their senior. For my mother, it was the best of three marriages and lasted till he died. When my sister and her husband divorced, it was amiable and friendly; he visited with his new wife eventually. We should support these relationships.
36
..and this, my fave sentence of the whole thing..' . “Karen was a lovely girl, very intelligent and sweet,” says Allen, who at 92 uses a walker but retains a sly smile. '
* sings to self *'..memories..may be beautiful and yet..'
37
@9,

Superfreak, as per the song, isn't bad, just very very different.

Peace.
38
@27 - Living with a man in his 60s isn't necessarily or automatically going to preclude sex. Lots of us old men still have active sex lives and not only enjoy sex but have learned a lot about making sex very enjoyable for our partners. Just so you know.
39
I am reminded that sin is only for the redeemed. The sinners can't have any.
40
Reading the whole linked article is highly recommended. I'm sure it is an artifact the author set up, but the image of Karen née Garver, writing a wistful note to her former lover seems tragic somehow.

Peace.
41
@38 Amen to that! I'm in a relationship with a wonderful man who is 25 years my senior (I'm 41 and he's 66) and he is a total and complete horndog! Thank goodness! He says he's been like this since he was in his teens. We do use pharmaceutical help sometimes, but he will often have no trouble "rising to the occasion" on his own. He is a kind and considerate lover who is completely GGG. He is also very athletic and has a better body than my ex-husband did at 30!

However, I will admit that I am a bit freaked out by the fact that Mrs. Santorum's former lover delivered her when she was born. I just find that a little . . . odd. It's one thing to be in a relationship with somebody who is old enough to be your parent. It is another thing to be in a relationship with the very person who pulled you from your mother's birth canal. I'm not judging, but I would have a problem with it for myself.

@35: I don't think Dan is being negative about age differences in a relationship. Dan has always been fine with it as long as there is open communication and the older party observes the Campsite Rule.

In this post, Dan is pointing out the raging hypocracy of the Santorums and right-wing Republicans in general. I recognize that the "reformed sinner" is a major theme in Christianity, but @22 is right. If Michelle Obama had this kind of history, and it had been discovered prior to the election, those on the right would be FREAKING OUT and calling her even more horrible names than they already do, even if she was a "reformed sinner" like Mrs. Santorum. And if that kind of information had come out prior to the election, they would have made that a MAJOR point of the campaign: "How can we elect Obama when his wife was shacking up with a liberal, commie, ACLU-loving baby-killer who is not only old enough to be her father, but literally pulled her out of her mother's snatch?"

It's only OK to do what Mrs. Santorum did if the person doing it is a Republican. If you are not a Republican, then you are tainted for life by anything you do, regardless of whether or not you are a "reformed sinner". However, if you are a Republican, you can just ask Jesus to forgive you and voila, you are reformed, all is fine and dandy, and anybody who brings it up is being mean and petty. It's just raging hypocracy and I'm just as sick of it as Dan is.
42
The hypocrisy of republican women drives me nuts! So many of them acting "holier than thou" when it turns out they had premarital sex, they had an abortion, and they depended on a man to achieve much of their success. Yet they tell young women they are going to hell, try to deny them Plan B, try to charge them with murder in the case of an accidental miscarriage, and expect those who are struggling to figure it out all on their own.
43
Aargh, so many people missing the point. The issue is not to say that fucking the old doctor was wrong, or that it indicates anything in particular about Mrs Santorum or her psychology. Fucking the doctor was a slightly unusual but perfectly human thing to do. The point is that Mr & Mrs Mix are now claiming that this *kind* of activity (and many other kinds of activity enjoyed by between 0.001% and 90% of the population) are not normal, and wrong, and should be illegal.
Dan is all about avoiding being judgmental about people's sexuality. Santorum often seems to claim that "kink", "gay" or other non-standard practices are so vanishingly rare that it doesn't matter if we legislate against them. Actually, they're not. They're everywhere, including inside his own home and inside his own marriage bed.
44
@35: JFC, the point is that she had sex outside of wedlock. The oddness wasn't necessarily the age, but fucking the ~doctor who birthed you~.

The age was just thrown in for backstory, it made it mildly more salacious, but it wasn't really the "odd" thing about the story.
45
This sounds like a case of the uptight straight boy unable to deal with the previous adventures of 'his' woman. Except that this uptight straight boy has political power.
46
The age difference doesn't surprise me at all. I remember being young ... once ::sighs at the nostalgic thoughts:: ... and the feeling of power of attracting an older though still virile, handsome man. If the story is true, that she moved into his basement but was scared of sleeping in it and moved upstairs permanently the first night, then she scored very highly in her bid to ensnare and grab him. Because their relationship was very financially rewarding for her. Until crunch time came. Her biological clock was ticking but he wasn't interested.

So she found herself someone who would definitely provide her with babies – lots of them. I suppose she thought she could live with the religious trappings. And she has, even if it's been a case of brainwashing. If it's not brainwashing, then it's certainly a case of more deliberate pre-feminist singlemindedness on her part: what can Rick do for her and how far can she go while hanging onto his coattails. I'm sure she's wistful, thinking that being FLOTUS would have been nice, after having to put up with a dick like him.
47
Just conjecture obviously but this makes me wonder if Rick Santorum's rabidly anti-abortion, anti-sexual freedom are based in jealousy of her previous relationship.
48
Sorry, meant to say "rabidly anti-abortion, anti-sexual freedom STANCES."
49
What is up with the Dems? How come none of them ever seen to have such horribly fascinating sex lives? The occassional affair or out-of-wedlock child is the best they can manage, while the Repubs are livin' it large.
50
@8 -- reaction formation. (Yay! Wikipedia is back! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_fo…)
51
@22--Thank you. It is absolutely bizarre that right-wing fruitcakes are ignoring her abortion. Santorum has this god-awful rationalization that it was somehow a "premature birth" instead of a late-term abortion, but it fits his very definition of a "partial birth abortion".
52
I think there has to be a huge amount of self loathing going on with this woman. How much you wanna bet Ricky reminds Karen of her slutty past every chance he gets, and how lucky she must be to be married to a man who has been able to "forgive" her. This has to be a seriously sick relationship.

Please wait...
