Hermes, in Classical Attic Greece, was very frequently depicted with a noticeable erection. Seeing as he was the god of travelers and the breaker-of-boundaries, the first road markers were actually made in the form of robust erections. I do not mean to imply that because of the depictions, so were road markers indicated thus. There seemed to be an innate connection between traveling and virility; much more, I cannot say with any certainty.
