I was waiting for the part where he tied her up with the jump rope. Oh well.
2
@1 Actually, later that evening, she tied him up, but no one was complaining.
3
It's not, you know, cat on dog, milk on cookie, lady on frog, astronaut on space octopus, or whatever the case may be.
5
@3 I don't have any personal issues with milk and cookies, but the Bible clearly states that it's a sin for them to be together.
6
Cats and dogs - together in the streets. And inter-racial, inter-species, inter-planetary and non-kosher (if the cookie has lard in it) couples alongside the gay couple.

Still, I took it as "live and let live", "let's love one another" and "let other people love one another".
7
See?! Gay Marriage will lead to space alien/human marriage and frog/princess marriage!
8
@4: I'd interpret the frog as allegorical but would rather the cat and dog were replaced by either a totally frumpy, white-bread couple or maybe the American Gothic farmer and wife. To be inclusive of boring folks like me because that's a stronger message.

But, again, good job Google!
9
This is Google, after all, so if someone posts a compliant about "The gay agenda" AND searches for gay porn*, they'd know. I don't think they should publicize that info, but it would be an interesting firestorm if they did.

*There's a lot of overlap on that Venn diagram.
10
First of all, was that a nod to tentacle porn?

Secondly, note what Spalding Gray once referred to as the depiction of the ethnic/misc./3rd world people in their place in the lower corner.
11
Um...two dudes in tuxes? When I saw it, I kinda figured that it could be two dudes, or it could be two lesbians...or perhaps even something else.
12
@10...look carefully. I think it's the "kids" in their old age, that picture you're referring to at the end.
13
Every time one of these things comes out, I'm amazed that there are still people who bother visiting Google's main page. Searching from the address bar ftw.
14
I saw that last night & smiled...
I actually thought the dude was a girl at first b/c of the ponytail. But he was so clueless that I finally clued in ;-)
15
@3 - LOL
16
The issue of consensual tentacle rape play is a touchy one in the astronaut/space-octopussexual community. Some people see it as a natural way of gaining power over the stereotypes they have to live with, some see it is shameful and demeaning, others simply don't like having the tentacles surrounded by constricting orifices. One thing is clear, it's not going away.
17
TWEET: That song must have been by Paul McCartney, because the dude sounded old.

...

Here's a song for people whose hearts will be broken when Dan Savage ties the knot. The classic by the Brooklyn Bridge, "Worst That Could Happen"

I'm Casey Kasem and I'll be back in a few minutes with more...of America's Top 100!

I immediately saw this as Google suggesting that the best way to find love is to pretend to be interested in what someone you desire likes.
19
@12
They grew up to be black and asian?
20
It didn't look like a pretense to me. How I saw it was the boy kept Googling for things to impress her and nothing worked and by the end he was sad and had given up. So he starts jumping rope because that's something he does. And then after all his Googling to find something she likes she sees something about him that He likes and she likes it too and then they click.

I thought it was really sweet. Which made me appreciate the nod to same-sex couples at the end. Sometimes Valentine's Day sentimentality just gets way too sugary but this was nicely done and there is Google saying that couples of all kinds experience love that way. Best Google doodle ever.
21
I like how Google subtly stresses the importance of common interests ...

I like it, too, but there's nothing subtle about it.
22
I thought the lower left-hand couple were the token lesbians. (Or maybe the milk and cookies at both female?)
23
Cute doesn't make up for sponsoring CPAC.
24
Thank you, #16 for giving me the best laugh of the day so far. (now please excuse me while I wipe the water off my computer screen)
25
@16 now I have the giggles - thanks a lot :-)
26
(Hi nocute - looks like we shared some synchronized laughter!)
27
@14: I think the boy is carrying a backpack, not sporting a ponytail.
@10: Would the message have been any different if they'd been in the upper right quadrant?
28
Hi Erica: As a member of the anti-astronaut/space octopus alliance, I'm deeply offended that the abomination they represent should be depicted in a manner suggestive of eliciting amused approval. This is disgraceful!
29
@5.....granted yes the bible says that (or something to that effect) but it is not our job as man to judge what others do. If 2 men want to be together, let them be together. If 2 women want to be together, let them be together. It may not be the sight you want to see and it may be considered wrong in a lot of peoples eyes, but when it comes down to it.....Is it hurting you? Physically or Emotionally? Is it going to be the end of your world that they are together? Is it something you are going to be able to change? The answer to all these are NO! So let it be and let God be the one to judge and handle it. I may not agree with it but it doesn't hurt me in the least bit.....and I have gay and lesbian friends whom I adore and think the world of.....they are all the same as any of my other friends, except they are gay! Being gay doesn't change who the person is.....my children are autistic.....the autism doesn't change who they are to me. I love them through it all. I don't like it but I can't change it, so I learn to accept it, deal with it, love them no matter what and go on with my life. That should be the same way with everyone. You don't have to like it, you don't even have to like the person, but they do deserve to be respected just like anyone else.
30
@29: I think you may be suffering from an irony deficiency.
31
I am much more concerned that the two children are going to engage in pre-marital double-dutching.
32
@29 and 30 (myself):
Perhaps my satire meter wasn't set on high. If this was the case, you can have a laugh at me!
33
@27 nocutename
Happy Valentine's Day, beautiful.

No, probably not. The miscellaneous races category couple just called to mind S.G.'s amusing analysis (was it in "Terrors of Pleasure"?).
34
@29 I'm pretty sure that there's a line in the bible which says that it's a sin to have cookies that are soggy with milk. Either way, it's pretty gross. Not that I'm against it, or anything.
35
@6: you really don't understand haters, do you?
36
I like "hategasm." I think I had one of those last election when I watched coverage of the CPAC convention.

@ 29 - sweetie, don't worry. We're snarky, but generally not haters. You'll come to recognize the actual trolls before long.

37
@36 oh boy than watch out.....I have my moments as well.... :)
38
nocutename@28: indeed, that was clearly a linguistic/semiotic manipulation of positive stereotypes to weasel-word their disgusting message of universal tolerance (as if cultural relativism hadn't been debunked!) into the developing brains and minds of our impressionable kids. How dare they!
39
It's nice to see Google has this sensitivity. It's funny when things don't go the stereotypical way; when Steve Jobs ends up looking a little like a control freak while Bill Gates contributes to important charity projects. In a world so full of hate messages, seeing that some people are doing something else it is quite heart-warming.
40
@39: I agree that I can choose to be upset that the primary couple is a straight white couple or I can find it rather heartwarming, and I happily choose the heartwarming option---which doesn't mean that I don't get to laugh/cringe over some aspects of it. I get and appreciate Mr. J's point. I just choose not to be upset by it. It's VD, after all . . .
41
@40: I sincerely hope it's not VD, and if it is you should really get it treated.
42
@40, indeed. I sometimes wonder if the future of race/gender/social class relations in a possibly discrimination-free world won't depend on people consciously choosing the heartwarming option at some point -- burying the hatchet, as it were.

@41, that was mean! :-)

Please wait...
