How many states need to pass before it can force a national hand somehow in the courts, if that is even possible?

Done.

One interesting development is an amendment that would push the date the law takes effect from October to January. The amendment failed in committee, but I believe it passed on the floor yesterday. We also picked up 3 supporters yesterday - one of them was a no vote in the committee on Monday.

Called! I hope this passes!!

I live in Severna Park, 5 minutes from Annapolis where this is all going down. I live in a center-conservative part of the state, unfortunately all three of my reps are Republican anti-gay bigots. I've personally met with two, the third dodges us well. Two of them have expressed it is their religious beliefs that prevent them from supporting the bill (separation of church and state!), the other one fears those who don't fully embrace homosexuality will be locked up... like they do in Canada (He seriously said this to a group of about 30 of us with a straight face.) I was very involved in the fight last year, volunteering and donating money. I was in the chamber when the final debate took place in the house of delegates in last year's session. One of the legislators came out on the floor! Making that 7 openly gay legislators in MD. It culminated in a crushing blow as the bill was sent back to committee, effectively killing it. Turns out the powers that be knew we were 1 or 2 votes shy (2 yays, changed their mind to nays after intense pressure from religious groups just prior to the vote), and taking the vote would have revealed to the opponents who to target and attack to change their mind this year.

Anyway I know I'm stuck in the past, last year really sucked the life outta me. Plus there was a scandal with EqualityMD which really turned me off of getting involved this year. The big difference this year is that Governor O'Malley has pledged total support and commitment to getting this bill passed this year. Last year, he was undecided and not supportive. Now he is fighting hard for it (Seeing what NY's passage did for their Governors image really knocked his ass of the fence)

Last year I went from thinking it was unlikely to OMG it's going to happen, only to be devastated, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but I think with the Gov'na's involvement OMG it could happen this year!!!!

I'm next door in Virginia where the taliban have taken hold, and I'm holding my breath this passes this time, if only to mean I won't have to move so far to get away from Talibanistan. Good Luck Gang! Fingers crossed...

Forgive me while I prioritize marriage equality for a moment

Never! What about MY issues, Dan???

Shoot, I forgot: [insert joke about psychotherapy]

Why yes I do live in Maryland, and one of my delegates is an undecided Democrat. Emailed him and called his office.

I'm from Maryland! All my district delegates are in favor, though. No need

Done, done, and done. I had one for, one opposed, and one on the fence. Three emails sent, and I let every one of them know that my husband, daughter, and I (all three registered voters) will remember this vote on election day.

Fortunately all of our delegates in district 16 are in favor of marriage equality. I feel just like the writer of the comment #6. Last year we were so hopeful, and when the vote was pulled because of church pressure, we were extremely bitter and angry. Hopefully with New York and Washington having done the right thing, our own legislature can move to the right side of history. Cautiously optimistic, but if it fails again, that's what high gravity beer is for.

Maryland House passed it! Since the Senate voted for it last session, and no senators have said that they will change their votes, it goes to the governor for signature. We'll still have the threat of a voter referendum, if enough signatures can be gathered for this November's ballot, but we may even survive that challenge.

You know, every once in awhile I dream about moving out of Maryland and heading out west to start a new life....but then they do stuff like this and it makes me fall in love with my state all over again. So proud to be a Marylander! Hoping for a little less heartbreak this time around.

Please wait...
