It's awesome alright. In fact, it's beyond awesome. It's a monument to razzle dazzle old style. Many palaces were big showy places to stike awe in people and show real power. But only remnants of all those still exist except for the pyramids or the parthenon.Even those have been stripped bare. Some of the palaces of ancient Rome were probably similar to this. Nero's palaces in particular sound like they surpassed this. Jeweled and painted with expensive marble and rare stones, they were lavish. The palaces of Darius in Persia, too. When you summon your provinces to come by and pay you taxes, you'd better impress them.
I've seen it twice, once while I lived in Denmark and again last summer. It is beautiful. It was fascinating to see how many people ignored the wall frescos by Botticelli, Perugino, Signorelli, and others, the ceiling and the Last Judgement dominate people's attention. The Raphael Rooms are worth seeing, too. Bring binoculars to see the details, because cameras are forbidden and the Sistine Chapel is crowded. You don't want to miss seeing Michelangelo's response to Monsignor Biagio da Cesena in the Last Judgement. Biagio was a prude who complained to the pope, Paull III, about Michelangelo's "shameless nudes", and his likeness can be found painted in hell with the ears of a jackass.
If there was ever any doubt about whether Michelangelo was gay, just look at the boobs and shoulders on his women. Masculine shoulders and the weirdest looking boobs you've ever seen.
Sadly, his is significantly better than in person. You don't have to shove or be shoved around, there aren't guards screaming at you to be quiet and to not take photos.
Silly me, I dragged my mouse the wrong way and cracked my head on the tiles.
Still, though - very cool.
