I'm drawn to the name of the organization, "Ending Spending Action Fund." You've got to just marvel at the Republicans' chutzpah to try to tag Obama as Mr. Big Spender and Mr. Run Up the Debt.
Under Bush and the Republicans, driving up the debt was a deliberate act: two rounds of tax cuts, two unfunded wars, a new unfunded prescription drug entitlement. With Obama in office, most of the increase in debt has been out of his control:
* When the economy goes into freefall, revenues inevitably go way down and expenditures go way up.
* Obama inherited the structural shortfalls Bush and the Republicans programmed into the system, plus the expanding cost of Medicare.
* He's been hog-tied by a Congress where the filibuster has given the minority the perverse incentive to sabotage the majority.
Sure, there was the stimulus, but that was less than a trillion dollars, and most of that was tax cuts and aid to state and local governments.
Counting down until the inevitable response from the so-called "Gay Dude for Romney..." I believe he's got some kind of daily quota.
I kind of believe Ricketts camp. Somebody puts his name on something, and that is his responsibility? The internet, for all its glories, is also a purveyor of gossip and unsubstantiated rumors. I suspect that to be the case here.
@3 It's a little more complicated than that. He paid a group to develop a plan/plans to help Mitt Romney defeat Pres. Obama. This, for better or worse, is one of the plans his money bought him. I'm willing to give Ricketts the benefit of the doubt on this, but it's quite clear that GOP operatives are willing to entertain thoughts of running this kind of campaign.
@3 - yeah, that pesky New York Times on the internet. Always pedaling those unsubstantiated rumors.
The Ricketts family is trying to get the City of Chicago to pony up taxpayer money to help renovate Wrigley Field. Because fiscal conservativism. Assholes.
And his kids own the Chicago Cubs, and are seeking $100 million to rehab Wrigley. This is a shitstorm in Chicago. Working on an Oped about it now. Two of my season-ticket partners have already started boycott talk.
