Hard to believe that modern civilized people see any benefit in burning books. Just don't buy the book in the first place. By now everyone knows what it's about.
I'm with @4. But I think she is thinking about it being November 5-- that's Guy Fawkes Night, which is when the English have bonfires and fireworks and burn little dollies in effigy.
If they really opposed violence against women they would be burning Korans, and Bibles.
But seriously 50 shades of grey seems like a shitty book (and who can people not know all kinds of sexual shit has been happening for years) if you don't like a book don't read it. Pretty simple as opposed to buy a copy then burn it. Way to sick it to the man.
Book burning is the way of the enemy. We will have no truck with it. Even if their anti-kink hand wringing is indeed righteous. Even if 50SoG is a really shitty book. Really shitty books have value as foils for books that are not really shitty. Anyone who wants to send precious printed knowledge up in flames is afraid of that knowledge and are playing into the enemy's hands.
Why burn it like a Nazi when you can recycle it like a nice tree-hugger? A charity I work with gets a lot of book donations, and I have no qualms about taking the really shitty old paperbacks to the recycling bin. Letting that crap sit on the shelves does nothing to advance the cause of culture. This book should be no different. Whatever you do, for fuck's sake don't buy new copies just to burn.
How fun that Clare Phillipson of Wearside Women in Need has generated all this publicity for her organization! How sad that their website — http://www.wearsidewomeninneed.org.uk/ — hasn't been updated in years. :(
The library system I work for just received a bunch of new copies of Anne Rice's "Sleeping Beauty" trilogy.
I can't decide if it's because of a revived interest in erotica in general due to 50 Shades, or if people are coming in to libraries and saying, "I'd like to read some non-shitty erotica please."
Good grief. Anyone who can't tell the difference between consensual BDSM and domestic abuse is either a moron or too lazy to learn something about a subject before they spout off about it.
Almost done with my first draft of "Mutt Romney: A Tale Of A French Castle Dwelling Dog".
But on another note: why doesn't this blog entry have a link? Wouldn't that be appropriate?
Above the violence of the fearful and sad.

Grows fat by breathing in the smoke of dreams
BDSM can only succeed in gaining acceptance by distancing itself from domestic abuse at every possible opportunity.
