Who says feminists suck all the pleasure out of life?
2
However worthy her cause, no one has every been on the right side while burning books.
3
So long as there isn't a burn ban at the time.

Almost done with my first draft of "Mutt Romney: A Tale Of A French Castle Dwelling Dog".
4
I don't agree with burning any books. Though people who like this book..I can see burning them at the stake.
5
Setting books on fire en masse never places you more solidly on the right side of history.

But on another note: why doesn't this blog entry have a link? Wouldn't that be appropriate?
6
Hard to believe that modern civilized people see any benefit in burning books. Just don't buy the book in the first place. By now everyone knows what it's about.

I'm with @4. But I think she is thinking about it being November 5-- that's Guy Fawkes Night, which is when the English have bonfires and fireworks and burn little dollies in effigy.
7
I say BURN. It'll produce a lot of Slog comments. We love a kuhn-TROV-er-see.
9
I'm, like, fifty shades of who gives a fuck.
10
If the burning gets them all hot and sweaty and they take their clothes off and start mud wrestling each other... then I'd be ok with it.
11
Um, let me see. People READ the book and then cry about it. Fucking stupid assholes. Don't read the book you turds.
12
They're encouraging people to buy the book so they can go and burn them. This doesn't seem well thought out.

The human right to let your soul fly free and naked
Above the violence of the fearful and sad.

They should burn all the e-books.
15
Maybe she's more of a Domme.

If they really opposed violence against women they would be burning Korans, and Bibles.

But seriously 50 shades of grey seems like a shitty book (and who can people not know all kinds of sexual shit has been happening for years) if you don't like a book don't read it. Pretty simple as opposed to buy a copy then burn it. Way to sick it to the man.

Book burning is the way of the enemy. We will have no truck with it. Even if their anti-kink hand wringing is indeed righteous. Even if 50SoG is a really shitty book. Really shitty books have value as foils for books that are not really shitty. Anyone who wants to send precious printed knowledge up in flames is afraid of that knowledge and are playing into the enemy's hands.

If I can put on my Mudede hat for a moment (it should be easy, I've had a glass of wine already)...

BDSM can only succeed in gaining acceptance by distancing itself from domestic abuse at every possible opportunity.
20
Let's bring back the Comic Code too!
21
is the book more popular than Jesus?
22
Why burn it like a Nazi when you can recycle it like a nice tree-hugger? A charity I work with gets a lot of book donations, and I have no qualms about taking the really shitty old paperbacks to the recycling bin. Letting that crap sit on the shelves does nothing to advance the cause of culture. This book should be no different. Whatever you do, for fuck's sake don't buy new copies just to burn.

How fun that Clare Phillipson of Wearside Women in Need has generated all this publicity for her organization! How sad that their website — http://www.wearsidewomeninneed.org.uk/ — hasn't been updated in years. :(

The library system I work for just received a bunch of new copies of Anne Rice's "Sleeping Beauty" trilogy.

I can't decide if it's because of a revived interest in erotica in general due to 50 Shades, or if people are coming in to libraries and saying, "I'd like to read some non-shitty erotica please."
25
No, burning books is never the answer, unless it is nuclear winter and then, maybe, start burning the shitty books first (50 Shades qualifies).
26
Good grief. Anyone who can't tell the difference between consensual BDSM and domestic abuse is either a moron or too lazy to learn something about a subject before they spout off about it.

Please wait...
