That's a very decent endorsement of Obama. More than that, though, it's a devastating condemnation of Mitt, well-reasoned and heartfelt.

My view of Mormons as clannish and self-promoting has been seriously tempered. This may have taken a great deal of effort and soul-searching for the editorial board of the Salt Lake Trib to do this, but they did do it, and in no half-hearted way. I think they deserve our utmost respect.

I just wiki's that newspaper. Not sure that they are traditionally conservative. Certainly, their roots are deeply liberal, going back 100 years. Still and all. Yippee.
3
Yeah the Trib is pretty Liberal. The Deseret News endorsing Obama would the most damning thing here, but that would never happen.
4
Ouch. I'm not usually a sadist but I hope that leaves a mark.
5
Guys, Salt Lake is a pretty liberal town.
6
Like most cities, SLC is a liberal island in a suburban sea of selfish, fearful conservatism.
7
Meh. Now if the Deseret News had endorsed Obama.....
8
Daaaaang.
9
Now, to rub some Salt Lake salt into those wounds.
10
god you people are ignorant.

the tribune delights in opposing the mormons.

there are two papers in town, the deseret news is the mormon paper.....
11
Gobsmacked!

Girls,

did you know that The Seattle Weekly,

Danny's hometown paper,

doesn't carry his column?

yeah....

That's Gotta Sting.......

I forget if I started from Seattle Transit Blog or the new Atlantic Cities blog, but somehow I got to following the links and came across the web site for Salt Lake City's transit authority.

Was I impressed! I knew they had light rail, but I had no idea they had such an extensive network or that they were expanding it so aggressively.

Add in the fact they've got an NBA and MLS team; beautiful scenery and what must be a decent climate; and what I believe is a decent tech sector--and now I'm thinking SLC's got to rank pretty high on some of these liveability indices.

The main drawback to living in Salt Lake City is the horrible air quality and lack of water. Other than that its a desert paradise with lots of active, energetic, and progressive people.
15
@13, their plans for 2015 are impressive, but their current network (one light rail line and a commuter rail line) looks a lot like what Seattle has (that is, not much). On the other hand, that's for a city 1/2 to 1/3 the size of Seattle.
16
Wait, how come Salt Lake City gets a liberal newspaper and we're stuck with the stupid, right-wing Seattle Times? This is bullshit!
17
Salt Lake is only about 55% Mormon. So there is a good chance the Trib editorial board is nonLDS.

I spent lots of time in SLC in late high school and as a Runnin' Ute (U o U) and still visit my elderly parents there occasionally and SLC truly is not the same as the rest of Utah. This is not a total suprise, but still.... wow. And well reasoned as pointed out by @1. I'm almost proud to be almost from SLC (but won't admit that if pressed.)

AND - the Trib kicks ass compared to the Times (JenV @16 is so, so right.)

Clearly SLC has a strong progressive will, strong enough that they elected Rocky Anderson mayor, twice.

Some of Rocky's progressive achievements:

As mayor, Anderson rose to nationwide prominence as a champion of several national and international causes, including climate protection, immigration reform, restorative criminal justice, LGBT rights, and an end to the "war on drugs". Before and after the invasion by the U.S. of Iraq in 2003, Anderson was a leading opponent of the invasion and occupation of Iraq and related human rights abuses. Anderson was the only mayor of a major U.S. city who advocated for the impeachment of President George W. Bush, which he did in many venues throughout the United States.

And:

During his years as Mayor, Rocky successfully fought many important battles, including victories for mass transit, wise long-term growth planning, greater respect toward and legal protections for minority communities (including equal benefits for gays and lesbians and their partners), and for unprecedented youth programs. He successfully challenged the stateā€™s English-Only law and opposed grandstanding Homeland Security campaigns against immigrant workers in the nationā€™s airports.

@14 does SLC still have weird laws about only serving liquor at members-only clubs? Haven't been there in many years but that'll rank right up there as a drawback in my book. OTOH there is the molƩ at the Red Iguana...
21
That was a great editorial.
22
@20 The private club joke went out under Huntsman (in time for the Olympics, don't you know), but good old Herbie has now instituted a Zion curtain, because those poor restaurant patrons with their simple little brains could be corrupted if they see a bartender pouring a drink for someone...

And the LDS sheepies are having a conniption. Not endorsing a Mo and endorsing a black man instead? How hideous! I'm sure KSL (church-owned tv news mouthpiece) will be offering their own endorsement now to counter the horrific Salt Lake Tribune
23
I bet Mitt is waiting for the Mexico City paper's endorsement, given that he's Latino and all..
24
22

maybe if you used lube like Danny says you could get unstuck.
25
Stuck in Utah, the private club laws were reversed a few years ago, not before the 2002 Olympics.

Please wait...
