So it's not underage, illegal binge drinking that kills students, it's energy drinks. OhhhKaaaay.
3
HBO made a documentary on the topic of the Nigerian story. It’s called Saving Africa’s Witch Children, I think. Really heartbreaking.
4
Poor, stupid kid. That is why you need to teach your kids how to drink before they go off to college.
5
All OD's... the same; too much. Wait between dosing...that shit is building up. At least with alcohol you know the strength.

RE: groin kick.

Ok, I agree with his sex offender status due to his advances on a minor. But now he's asking adult women to kick him in the groin. How is that illegal?
7
Eighteen years old and too stupid to read warning labels.

@6: I thought the same thing. Since forcible sterilization isn't an option for sex offenders, shouldn't this scenario be the next best thing we can hope for?

In the article, it says he "flies to meet his victims". They're willing participants, he's the one going to meet them, and they're the ones dishing out the pain and being paid for it, so how are they "victims" in this scenario?
9
@7: HA! Somebody died, so let's mock him! HA!
10
I'm confused by your shark/seatbelt joke.
13
@10 - it's Irony, something people in the rest of the world get.

Does anyone have an explanation as to why the water is still 4 ft high?

“It filled the city like a bathtub,” she said.

This implies that there are some type of walls around the city holding the water in? Or what...

@6,8, I think the problem is that he's deceiving the women he's meeting up with. It would be one thing if he was advertising for kinkster women to kick him in the groin but his Craigslist ad states that he's teaching self-defense classes, while police allege that his real motivation is sexual gratification.

16
@15,
Yeah, I suppose I can concede that makes sense.

That article was poorly written though. Try to be a little less biased next time, KATU staff.

@14,

Storm Surges can last a long time. The air pressure in the area is still lower than it is out at sea, keeping the water at a higher-than-sea level inside the city.

@19 What he needs is a kick in the head.
21
The easy thing to do is just buy an espresso machine, a bag of cane sugar, and do it yourself, cheaper.

Stupid is as stupid does. There's a reason why, up in BC, we used to call that the Party College.

@17

Thanks for the pointers.

So my reading of this is the surge, which seems to have caused all the coastal damage, is caused initially by low pressure. This forces air to flow into that area and makes the water "pile up" on itself.

I can accept that is the case for the initial tsunami like waves...although, I'm trying to find some on the scene videos of the 13ft water cascading through the streets of lower Manhattan. And I will hold judgement that the low pressure is enough to keep a 4ft flood in place.

Those things aside then, I am looking for reasons why this storm did have those record low air pressures.

And for further reference regarding EtOH, critical toxicity occurs at or greater than 0.1 (1000 mEq/L). I've actually seen people sitting up and talking normally at .25 - but they have built up an astounding tolerance usually because of alcoholism. For a new drinker, most pass out at around 0.12-0.14. A 0.4 is enough to kill you a few times over. Poor guy.

I wonder when we are going to start separating manhood with alcoholic intake. I know it's in all the commercials, right? A drink or two with the guys and all the strange you can handle? It's not just here in the US either. Manliness is very closely tied to consumption in Australia and the UK. Parts of Asia as well. I remember accepting lemonade at a party one time and being looked upon by some Aussies there as either a twelve-year-old or a weakling. Didn't matter. The next day I felt fine.

Just seems funny in the big picture and at this stage of man that so many equate sexual identity with the ability to withstand toxins (in this case, large amounts of booze).

@22,
All hurricanes have low air pressure, that's essentially what makes them hurricanes.

I don't think Sandy had *record* low pressure, per se. Although the NWS and NOAA would have more info on that.

Heavy flooding due to storm surge is really common during hurricanes and tropical storms... inevitable, really.

Just read up on hurricanes and storm surges on weather.gov or even wikipedia. What happened in Manhattan and New Jersey wasn't really surprising.

@23: Source? An average woman who has two drinks in one hour will register above .10 BAC if the standard charts are to be believed. An average man will get there after three drinks in two hours. By that standard there are legions of long-term critically toxicified people running around Seattle. (zombies!)

It would be pretty funny if people suddenly started passing out at .12 though - like herds of fainting goats every weekend night.

25: Oops. Thanks for bringing to my attention. Been out of healthcare too long. I'm confusing mg/dl with mmol/l. Toxicity is at 40 mg/dl which is .4 (the level of the poor student). I meant to say that I've seen chronic alcoholics with blood levels this high and more and appear to be fine. They've built a tolerance. New drinkers usually start passing out at around .2 (200 mg/dl). A new drinker at .4 is in critical peril. Apologies.

Please wait...
