It's like saying: "I'm burt out on this whole metabolizing oxygen process."
What planet do they live on that they are not effect by government policies?
Elections MATTER.
Way too many people in this country are entitled little twats who want everybody else to do all the heavy lifting for them. Including being "burnt out" deciding on our leaders.
The misconception is that presidential elections are about high ideals. They're not. It's about the dull, inefficient, and thankless work of crafting policy - bit by bit. Incremental changes that take decades to effect.
And unfortunately only days to undue.
And what we are against is the scorched earth tactics of the GOP that want to undue literally every piece of legislation that makes this country livable for non millionaires.
Or, you can come the Washington United for Marriage Action Center (517 E Pike) to canvas. You can also make calls to voters who haven't gotten their ballots in by going to the Washington Bus (1100 E Union St #1E) or to the first floor of The Westin downtown.
Obama is very likely to win but we can't say the same for approving Ref. 74. We can use every bit of help we can get!
It's worth thinking about the fact that a lot of people are thoughtfully disengaged in the system. When your only two legitimate options are both corporate-influenced warmongers it can be hard for someone who's a true leftist/progressive to want to vote for any candidates. However, that's not really a good excuse for not voting on initiatives/referendums etc. People can write 'abstain' or something similar in the write-in section for offices where they can't in good conscience vote for any of the available candidates. /2 cents
Obama doesn't matter; he's going to win Washington no matter what anybody does. BUT WHAT ABOUT R-74? You're "too burnt out" to care if your friends and neighbors have civil rights or not? How in hell does THAT happen?
You need to tell your friend to fuck off, you're never talking to them again if he doesn't vote. THAT is your phone banking: call your friend and MAKE HIM FUCKING VOTE. Break his fucking windows if you have to to get his attention.
I'm afraid that, from bombing innocents in Pakistan to increasing economic inequality, President Obama has done some monstrous things himself. Governor Romney certainly wouldn't be better. And that's precisely the problem.
Please, have some sympathy for non-voters. It's not always because we don't care.
Presumably they mean "I'm burnt out on people acting like I'm a crazy moron when I tell them I decided not to know anything about the political class which controls my society because it was upsetting to read about."
2 of my coworkers aren't voting, and I'm pissed about it. We definitely told them we didn't care if they voted for people, but there are life changing referendums that they support, and still won't vote. Infuriating.
@10, please see @7. The presidency is not the only thing at stake. I have no sympathy when you abstain from helping your fellow community members secure what the rights they deserve.
ELECTIONS MATTER GODDAMNIT. IF THEY DIDN'T THEN I'D HAVE TO FACE THE REALITY THAT I'M A SINGLE PERSON ON A PLANET WITH SIX BILLION OTHER DOOMED IDIOTS JUST LIKE MYSELF FUUUUUUUUUUCK
The correct response(s) would be: You are an idiot. You have no excuse. Are you an American? Fuck you. Then move to a country where the political system won't burn you out because no one is allowed to criticize the government.
Troll please. Here's a newsflash for you: EVERY PRESIDENT HAS DONE HORRIBLE THINGS! That, unfortunately, comes with the job of being the leader of an empire the size of ours. If you want to be honest, even the Mayor of a small town has to do the occasional bastardy thing.
If you feel that you cannot vote for anyone other than some dreary mirror image of yourself, that is your personality flaw - just write yourself in, or find some third party candidate that matches your "values", and vote for him/her. But the election is not just some dumb reality show where you vote for your favorite star. There's lots of other important things to vote on.
There is no such thing as "thoughtfully disengaged in the system." Some people like to justify their denial of reality by claiming they're too smart to be fooled, but the only part of the system from which they're "disengaged" is the part where they get to have input.
@17, I was on the fence regarding voting for just that reason. Unfortunately, I'm uselessly idealistic and I don't believe in even dignifying the concept that government should have any say in the love of consenting adults.
I get so tired of people's manufactured cynicism about the political process. People seem to think it makes them sound sophisticated, rather than abysmally ignorant. If you don't like the current political situation, get involved and work to change it. The world is run by those who show up.
@21, I can't listen to podcasts. Really. I get up and walk away after fifteen seconds. I can't help but think, "god, get to the point, TALK FASTER". I'm texty that way. Write it down, then I'll look at it.
Arizona went to Romney because they did their damnedest to disenfranchise the democrat voters. Hispanic voters told wrong place and times to vote, provisional ballots not available, early voters (which gave Obama a huge lead) counted as provisional ballots (which aren't usually counted at all). Arizona might not have gone blue entirely but it would be very, very purple.
Eff non voters. They're just lazy or chicken sh*t and don't want to admit they hate both candidates.

Just vote you idiots.

@35: That's pretty great... if only I'd had it at the time.
