To me the perplexing ones are the guys like Buffet, who have all the money in the world and spend their time in a bunch of boring "policy analysis" meetings. If money isn't worth spending, then why accumulate it. The best job in America is being a rich dude, with a big house, but if the proles ever figure that out, they'd hit the streets.
2
This would sad... if Rmoney weren't so relentlessly horrid. He would've ruined millions more people's lives as Pre$ident.
3
So this is the 'gift' Obama gave me for my vote. I was wondering when it would arrive.
4
And he was rich—yes, richer than a king—
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place...
5
I normally would refrain from taking joy in other people's dashed hopes. But this time I'll make an exception.
6
Romney ordered out instead of cooking because he realized it's high time we all start listening to Charles Mudede.
7
Speaking of Rich Man, Poor Man, I am in the market for a dirt cheap couch, preferably sent over by some automatic way that doesn't involve me squishing my fingers against the side walls of a truck bed, and I saw this sign on East Hill for a "Discount Furniture Outlet Sale". Walking in, I thought I would find hideous but cheap, however the entry level price was about $699. Is that considered discount or outlet pricing in these parts? Not in my book...
8

Part II

Can we all agree to call it a "couch" or a "sofa" but not keep using both words? Google gets so tiresome.
9
the Lord moves in mysterious ways.
10
goodness.

you girls won.

the nation needs solutions.

leadership.

and still you gloat over the fate of one sad old man?

do you have ANYTHING except your hate?

11
Why would Romney go out of his way to help the Republican Party rebuild? They didn't go out of their way to help him win.
12
God forbid he dive into good works. Much better to mope.
13
@11 What? You are kidding, right?
14
My wife and I eat Thanksgiving dinner at Boston Market every year. It's our tradition. *sniff*
15

16
@8
Some of us call it a davenport or chesterfield, though. What about that? Mebbe it's a settee.
17
I'll bet Mitt rides his bike on the sidewalk.
18
@4: Yeah, ok, and Richard Romney is clean-favored, too. But I doubt that he has ever even once fluttered pulses when he said "good morning". He's many things, but a flutterer of pulses he is not.
19
I picture Ann sitting on the edge of her $25,000 bed, wracked with sobs, pulling another $100 bill from the gold-plated tissue box to dry her eyes, as one of her brigade of servants putters about her quietly, tending to the needs of the house. Ann knows she should try to get her life back together. Driving her $150,000 SUV over to the stables in the south wing to ride one of the horses for a bit would no doubt lift her spirits, but she just can't gather the will.

Try as I might, I just can't conjure up any sympathy, though. Weird.
20
@13, I didn't care for Romney's potential presidency myself, but I can see where he could care less about helping the republican party since they treated him like sloppy seconds and forced him to take very extreme views on the social issues to keep some semblance of base support which in addition to his tone deaf attitudes about 99% struggle lost him the rest of the country.
21
I did actually smile when I got the Ann Romney part, which probably makes me a horrible person. I guess. Riding horses to feel better? Even the way she expresses sadness is weird.

But what might leaven the Romney's moods would be Obama somehow losing this fiscal cliff nonsense. At which point I guess I'd find a horse to ride.
23
Romneys plus son/wife plus four grands equals eight people. That's too many kids running around to cook Thanksgiving for? Poor, poor dears. Such a burden! Lucky for them that Boston Market can provide all the traditional foods and they can afford to order in. Imagine the horror if they'd had to go out to some sort of communal eating place.
24
Fuck Mitt Romney.
25
I think Ann probably expected the White House not from bad polls, but because she truly expected it was part of God's plan for her and for America. That might also explain why Romney didn't prepare a concession speech.
26
He could not have spend one of his bags of money on catering?

You have to know that at least one of his kids were wondering if they shouldn't just buy Boston Market and suck all the money out of it, just to cheer up dad.
27
Think of all the US jobs that Mitt was unable to export to China and India.

Merry Christmas, America!
28
What's the point of having millions of dollars and avoiding taxes for years if you order Boston Market for Thanksgiving? We really dodged a bullet with that one.
29
"By all accounts, the past month has been most difficult on Romney’s wife, Ann, who friends said believed up until the end that ascending to the White House was their destiny. "

That is the problem with believing in destiny.
30
@29
But it WAS destiny.
And she and her husband fucked it up.
That's why she's crying.
Eventually she'll have to face Jesus who will want to know what the fuck was up with the "you people" comment and the "47%" comment and so on that cost Him the election.
If I was Mitt then I'd be depressed also.
Dude, you ruined Jesus' plan to Save America.
WTF.
31
@3 - YES.
32
Of course Ann and Mitt are depressed, out-of-sorts, disheveled, lonely, angry, and above all still very emotionally and physically exhausted. Yes, we're glad that Obama won and happy that Mitt lost.. but let's not forget to be compassionate, more forward, and not gloat.
33
Shut up Phoebe.
34
Wrote a letter to his neighbour claiming that the construction workers weren't working hard enough....

Fuckkkk you.
35
@32 " but let's not forget to be compassionate, more forward, and not gloat."

Why not? Who is it affecting? We know for a fact that Rmoney doesn't care about us: he said so himself. He doesn't care what we think, what we feel, how we live, or how we die. So how is gloating and laughing at him going to hurt him, even if he was aware of it (which I doubt seriously)?

You've made a moral statement, assuming we're all familiar w/ the essential bedrock of where that morality comes from. I'm not familiar with it, so please explain.

My morality says that if you're going to make whatever machiavellian deals to become POTUS at all costs, and damned be the populace, then you're fair game for whatever the populace says about you. Also, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Obama has been the recipient of far, far worse attacks in the *national media*, not on some minor, regional website (sorry Slog). Did you ever bother to lurk the Team Rape websites these past four years, scolding them for putting up the endless variations of "Obama is a [racist codeword for african-american]"? Please post those links on Slog, they'll be great reading.
36
I'm a bad person. I'm going to gloat, at least just a little.

WTF is with ordering out to Boston Market? The man has more money than everyone that I know combined will ever see in their entire lives. He could afford fleets of caterers. And his solution to Thanksgiving is takeout Boston Market? Seriously? More proof that money can't buy taste.

Imagine what an awkward Thanksgiving that must have been for the grandkids. Grandpa is moping around with the sadz. Grandma is crying in her Chardonnay (in crystal glasses, natch). Unkempt horses wandering listlessly in the back pasture. Nobody saying a fucking word about the election.
37
According to Washington Post there are 30 Romenys in all. If each adult brought one dish, that's one hell of a feast! Delegate!! Romney's children must have in-laws to divy up the holidays with.
38
.Shame on all of you haters. Not a shred of decency, empathy or class in any of you.
39
I'm with Phoebe. I'm not sending flowers or anything (which house to send em to?!!). We won. It's the holiday season. Rise above the shit and set a good example and all that. Be excellent to each other.
40
I mostly agree with Phoebe. A day or two, hell even a week's worth of gloating was acceptable. But now it's just rubbing their noses in it and we're better than that. Even if @ 35's right and Mitt is keenly ignorant of it all, there's plenty of folks on the right (and even a few decent-hearted ones) that are aware and probably shouldn't be subjected to it.
41
I feel sorry for all those little children running around underfoot that will not get to know the smells and sounds of a big meal being prepared on Thanksgiving morning. How sterile.
42
Paul, you're not demonstrating very good sportsmanship here.
43
Some Old Nobody...You, Sir, are wrong, your ignorance is showing. Every body of research of the media treatment of Mr. Obamaindicates that he has gotten the biggest "free ride" since the morally disgusting Clinton presidency. Do some academic research before spewing your hateful ignorance.
44
@ 17 more people should when on the street slows down traffic, pedestrians and bikes belong on the sidewalk.
45
Oh, I'm gloating. An arrogant narcissist who has spent her life riding on her high horse over a world populated by inferior servants doesn't get the golden palace and eternal prestige she *knows* she's entitled to? Cry on your pearls, you little queen. Hell, yeah, I'm gloating. I'll be a bad sport. If you find that to be difficult, just think about how the Romneys, that sacred royalty, see themselves, and how they see us, and what they would have liked to have done to us. I'll gloat til the cows come home while I wipe my brow at the thought of the iceberg we missed.
46
@ 36 Ive read several articles on how frugal he is, he built a fence at his home with his sons instead of hiring someone.
47
(although I will concede that without the mockery of Mitt, we'd likely be without the opportunity to mock the much more deserving lomerson2, who states that, "Every body of research of the media treatment of Mr. Obamaindicates that he has gotten the biggest "free ride" since the morally disgusting Clinton presidency" and then SHOCKINGLY(!) neglects to link to any of these numerous and objective studies. Dillrod.)
48
Throughout the vast hallways of the Romney manse, you can hear the faint, echo-y sounds of the elder Romney's voice...

"Once I had a railroad; made it run, made it race against time. Then I parted out that railroad, made a ton; brother, why isn't the White House mine?"
49
@43 What the hell are you talking about?! What body of research? Glenn Beck? Sean Hannity? Are you sure you're not talking about George W. "Daddy's Boy" Bush? Do you even know anything about Clinton's or Obama's biography? (Oh, that's right. He was born in Kenya.) Sir, YOUR ignorance is showing.
50
@43 I must heartily disagree with you, sir. S.O.N.L.I is one of the finest, most insightful commentators on this or any blog.

And, you, are a sad fool whose sell-by date was November 6. Your assertions are partisan nonsense. Go away, son, and trouble us no more.
51
This is an interesting thread. I admit that at first I wanted to join those relishing in Mitt's suffering, and he probably deserves some of that, but I like to think that liberals can usually claim the high ground because of our empathy and compassion - traits I find lacking on the right. So I'll wish them well and sincerely hope that they decide to put their money and efforts into charitable causes, as they have suggested. (Maybe they could have bought a few extra turkey dinners for some folks who couldn't afford them?)
52
Why are people knocking on the hobby of the uber rich? It's just like fishing, if you're doing it to feed yourself then that's just sad. Mitt was fishing, didn't catch nothing, but man, you should see how big that gap in votes were!
53
Gosh, I hope Ann can get back to riding her horses!

What is the world coming to, when the world cannot appreciate the contributions to Cayman Island banking that the Romney family has made?
54
@32
Look up "tone troll".
Did you miss the "47%" video?
Did you miss the bit about the tax returns?
Did you miss the bit about Limbaugh calling Fluke a "slut" and Romney saying "I'll just say this which is it’s not the language I would have used."
Or did you miss the debates?
Did you miss "Please continue, governor"?

But you say that we should be "compassionate" towards a person like that?
Why? What has he done to be worthy of any compassion?
Because it seems to be the exact opposite.

Didn't Romney's company Bain lobby Congress to reduce Romney's taxes?
55
I doubt if any of that is true. How would a "friend" know that Ann is crying in private? Schadenfruede's fine but there should be a reason for it. The thing about Mormons is that they are never alone; they are always with their large families.
56
From the article:

"He [Romney] wrote to one [CEO] who’s having a liver transplant soon: 'I’ll change your bedpan, take you back and forth to treatment.'"

57
Wow, what a bunch of sore winners. I guess you've all just figured out there are no gifts coming. Ever.
58
Compassion doesn't always mean holding someone's hand. When a person makes bad decisions and gets taught some hard lessons, the compassionate thing to do is to let them suffer, and hope they learn from their suffering to live better going forward.

Mitt and Ann, who were so sure they were destined to win, are learning about the country (outside the insulated rich bubble) they live in. I hope they do learn, and go on to put their money and influence to good use.
59
After having seen Moneyball and 538.com, I think we're starting to see a shift in the way campaigns are being managed. The GOP campaigns as far back as I can recall had little basis in statistical measures or science, whereas the Obama campaign was micro=targeted and highly focused both in 08 AND 12.

Perhaps the GOPs closeness to religious groups has led it to assume that they cannot fail, since they have the Almighty on their side-whereas the Democrats merely have Almighty Math on their side. The LDS religion talks about America someday begging the Mormons to lead us out of turmoil, and perhaps Romney thought that's what this election was. Given the refusal of Republicans to accept Global Warming (since their god promised never to destroy the world by flood) or evolution or that wealth is not a divine reward, should we be surprised at GOP candidates with Messiah complexes?

In a contest between political science and political religion, its no mystery as to which is going to win.
60
@58, I don't know where you get either of your contentions. It's hardly compassionate to let anyone suffer, and the Romneys are not going to be learning about the rest of the country; they're still insulated by their money.
61
Why wouldn't we laugh at a cartoon villain failing to achieve his plan of robbing half the nation for personal gain?

The least he could do is murder a henchman though.

Or maybe he did. We haven't seen Carl Rove in a while.
62
@54: Look up 'Question Troll'
63
@43 Hey hey! Did the unregistered troll finally man up & register? Or does the '2' mean you're really his son?

Either way, I'm sure we'll all enjoy your reports from FoxNews FantasyLand, where young women are just sluts to be raped, only Christian multi-millionaires truly understand the nature of reality, and science & reason have no place in God's America.

Oh, and the anger. Don't forget to express your bitter, spiteful anger in every post. You're representing what's best about America, after all.
64
People, it's just an article in the Washington Post. They make it up.
If Romney really is depressed, I'm sure he can easily find solace in arbitrarily firing some of the "help."
65
@62
"Look up 'Question Troll'"

Okay. I can do that.
Hmmmm. There doesn't seem to be a point to that on Google's first page.
Yet there are LOTS of entries on Google's first page for "tone troll".
Seriously, do you have a problem with understanding the discussion?

If you think that Limbaugh calling Fluke a "slut" and Romney saying "I'll just say this which is it’s not the language I would have used." is acceptable then that's your opinion.
Personally, I don't think that it is acceptable and I am glad that the guy who said that lost the election.
I do not have to be compassionate towards those who lack compassion.
I do not have to be tolerant of intolerance.
66
Aw, leave Mitt alone. Despite the lack of any outward signs, I'm pretty sure he's only human.
67
@63: "...bitter, spiteful anger in every post"

hmmmmmm......
68
@65: Okay, 'compassionate' is too much to ask for - I grant you that. How, about just 'move on' then?

Let's put things in perspective:

2012 Debate Highlights.
69
@64: I believe you're thinking of the New York Post, the childish and partisan gossip rag that's owned by Rupert Murdoch. The Washington Post was the one Woodward & Bernstein worked for when they took down a corrupt President.
70
@60, in the same way that it's not compassion to let a murderer go free because he suffers in jail (or at least, it's only compassion within a very limited view). I think it makes sense to regret that someone's choices led them to suffer, but to eliminate that kind of suffering-as-consequence messes with karma. Just my thoughts as someone with a lifelong casual interest in Buddhism. I don't claim to understand anything perfectly.

I phrased the "learning" part poorly; I was referring specifically to election night, and reality not conforming to the Romneys' expectations. They learned that most of the country does not agree with them, as they had thought. Hopefully they will continue to think about that, and might eventually come to see that it's not that we're all lazy welfare queens, that there are legitimate reasons that more than half the country didn't support them. I'm not saying we should hold our breath for this, but it's a nice idea that it might happen someday that their suffering will be productive.
71
Perhaps if Mitt and Ann were able to connect their "suffering" (and, well, if we're counting "not getting to be president/first lady" as suffering, then unless Barack and Michelle spend their days haunting the slog message board, that means that everyone here is "suffering"), ahem, perhaps if Mitt and Ann were able to connect their "suffering" with the suffering their personal dollar-maximization has inflicted on so many lives they've touched, and until they're willing to make amends for all the suffering they've inflicted, and until they're willing to humble themselves enough to admit that their experiences are exactly as valid and important as the experiences of the people they continue to deride as takers, until then, I'm not going to have much sympathy for them.

What they're experiencing is not suffering, though, not real suffering. They're just feeling sore over not getting their way. They're not used to that feeling.

Possibly my favorite thing about electoral democracy, even the flawed electoral democracy we have in America, is that it's one of the few venues where a moneyman with horrible ideas and horrible values can experience the sensation of being told "no."
72
I just don't get why Romney faced with feeding Thanksgiving to a bunch of grandchildren wouldn't just go to Ralph's and get a precooked famiky turkey meal (or three) from the deli. Kroger brand Thanksgiving has to be way better than Boston Market.
73
If you look at the parties' national leaders after their last election, here is the tread: republicans drop off the face of map, democrats continue working on societal good.

Carter: carter center and habitat for humanity
Reagan: retire to ranch
GHW Bush: retire to kennebunkport
Clinton: Clinton global initiative
Gore: Nobel prize
GW Bush: retire to ranch
Mitt: retire to la jolla.

Mitt isn't sad, he is perfectly happy following in the footsteps of elder republicans.
74
So two people who enriched themselves tremendously by exploiting millions of others, did enrich themselves, and gave nothing back to their country, through trying every trick in the book. But when they also wanted to rule the millions of others, this was denied to them, although they also tried every trick in the book to make it happen.

And now they have the sads. Because although they still have the cake, without the cherry of the Presidency on top of it, they find the cake meaningless.

Cry, spoiled children, cry on your cake, that Romney could not make it to boss-strawman of the uber-rich.

Forget the staffers whose credit cards were annuled the second Romney lost - who couldn't pay their cab ride home.

Don't expect any compassion from me. You've bankrupted far too many of your fellow citizens in enriching yourselves. How many died of ill-health, not able to have a good health insurance, because of the Romneys' insatiable greed ? How many more would have died if he had won ? This man is a criminal.
75
I have no interest in compassion for the Romneys. But why the hell are we still talking about them? Mitt just lost his 2nd Presidential election. He's done in politics, and I doubt he has enough brand name status to get back into business. He's done, they're done, and will now fade back into irrelevance until and unless one of his kids runs for office.
76
This man had made it very clear during his entire presidential campaign that he doesn't give a crap about the little people, and that we are ALL the little people to him.

It honestly isn't even worth taking joy in his sorrow. It's like they aren't even human beings.
77
@38: You seem to have described the Romneys perfectly! Now fuck off!
78
@68: We'll "move on" when he and his brood stop crying to the papers about their loss.
79
"In private, Romney has told friends he has little interest in helping the Republican Party rebuild and rebrand itself."

And why would they ask him? He's not really one of them and I doubt we will ever see or hear from him again. He's not a good speaker or pundit. He clearly wasn't listening during his campaign so no use asking for help there.

I have no ill will for the Romneys. They seem like decent people. But they are also myopic and did not show the concern or ability to relate to anyone not in their life situation.

That we are glad he didn't get elected is not being a hater. That we laugh at the idea of wealthy people who went to Boston Market (of all places) to get Thanksgiving food when they have a ton of (caring?) relatives doesn't make us haters. It's human nature to enjoy a good piece of gossip.

We all move on now - even the Romneys.
80
@32 i'm not happy they're feeling bad and i'd suggest that if they loved the country as much as they said they did, then they should move on and continue serving america in some meaningful ways that the americans they claimed to represent wil find some value in, like say al gore or jimmy carter, i doubt that it'll happen so whatevs.
but i 've had a day since this was posted to wonder why these children are ordering thier holiday dinner from boston market.? you can get the big stuff there, turkey , and stuffing and taters and stuff, but what about the real thanksgiving foods that make it family ? the green bean casserole, jello salads, veggie. relish and pickle plates, mac and cheese. and how do you present a boston market meal to your kids and grandkids and the various other people that show up ? did they use a large folding card table, chinet and disposable tableware,so they didn't have to wash dishes .do they separate and recycle ? is this how hyper rich people spend their money ? completely on prefabricated artifice ? and is it really a gloat, phoebe, to hear of this and remain joyous that they didn't win ?
81
As much as I don't care for Mitt Romney, I think this slap at him is mean and petty. He is a human being whose dream has been thwarted. Have you no mercy? Our vanquished enemies are still human.
82
Mitt Romney is an ignorant right wing douchebag. Feel free to print that on a t shirt.
83
@70 - They learned that most of the country does not agree with them, as they had thought
I don't believe that is the lesson they walked away with. I'm not sure they have the capacity for that level of introspection.
They believed in their hearts that God would put them in the White House. When they lost, their assumption was more likely that satan triumphed, not that they did anything wrong. They will view this as a test of their piety, viewing themselves as Job or Moses.
Perhaps GayDudeForRomney could offer Mitt a consolation blowjob.
84
And to echo some others, if I were to throw myself a little catered pity party, I sure as shit wouldn't hire Boston Market to cater it.

And I'm fucking poor.
85
Michelle and I gloated for a bit, but it's a empty calorie feeling. We have so much work to do. It was a long and hard campaign, and we do wish Mitt and his family all the best. That's the way politics works.
86
Making money has ceased to be satisfying. Politics is a closed door.
It's time for good works, Mitt. All that's left, and good for what ails ya.
87
You mean an empty-calorie feeling?

GDfR?
88
I can't help but wonder...if the Romney's Thanksgiving dinner might have turned out differently, had Mitt not woken up on the wrong side of history....and, out of frustration/spite he resorted to doing one of the things he has professed to enjoy. He once stated that he likes to fire people who provide him goods & services. Thanksgiving was not the ideal time to let the household staff AND the caterers go, just to feel a little bit of happiness.

Then again, the whole Boston Market story might be quite different than was reported. Maybe they actually bought a market in Boston, had the entire thing, with all of its contents & staff flown to LaJolla for Turkey Day. Eaten well & fired them all after the dessert dishes were dried & put away.

Feeling sorry for or bad for people who have displayed traits of sociopaths because they lost the chance to take control of America is not without valid reasons. I recall how Ann blew off the reporters asking about their tax returns with the send off, "that is all that YOU PEOPLE are going to get".....the GOP nomination is for Ann & Mitt & family just like their tax returns, all they are going to get.
90
@30,

By far the best comment. I was too lazy to pay attention to the "White Horse prophecy", which was supposed to mean that Romney would be President. Obviously, Marie Antoinette and The Bot bought into all that religious mumbo jumbo.

At least she still has Rafalca.
91
#38
".Shame on all of you haters. Not a shred of decency, empathy or class in any of you."

Guilty (speaking for myself) as charged! Who knew schadenfreude was so delicious?
92
I still remember the months of "Sore Loserman." They turned the stove onto high and kept it there for years - I'm not sure why I should be gracious when they finally burn themselves.
93
Every election has at least one losing candidate.

I can understand the depression, but I find it hard to generate either sympathy or empathy. They aren't going to starve (even if they are reduced to take-out),* and other opportunities will come their way.

*Charles, of course, would argue that ordering take-out was a good thing; at least Ann isn't being oppressed by being forced into the kitchen, and the fact that they are eating restaurant food demonstrates their greater humanity
94
Sorry, I just *can't* feel sorry for him. Talk about a self-pitying loser with a sense of entitlement. Go cry and blow your nose in your millions, Mitt.
96
I just wanted to chime in to say something I never before thought I'd say: I agree with Bailo @1.
97
Hey, Al Gore lost the election, spent some time in the CU basement growing that nutjob beard, and then turned into a mega-environmentalist and won a Nobel. There's hope for Mr. Romney. Maybe he'll get back in touch with his moderate conservative side from when he was Governor of Massachusetts.
98
Hm. If the Romneys had, instead of going to a mid-priced quasi-fast-food joint like Boston Market, had their Thanksgiving catered by Frou-Frou and Sneer's or had their live-in staff confect them up a fine feast, wouldn't we be mocking them for that?

Is there ANY option that we wouldn't be made fun of on this thread? He has every relative bring a dish--oh, you know those big Mormon families. He gets it catered--oh those rich folks and their push-button lives. They skip Thanksgiving--he's sulking like a sore loser. They make it themselves... I can't find anything wrong with that one, but you see where I'm going with this. They go to Boston Market and we psychoanalyze it, but we'd do that no matter where they got their stuffing and cranberry sauce.
99
No, no, no. You've misread.

Romney bought Boston Market. Then he fired everyone. You know, for the catharsis.
100
@98 For me, it's much less about the food than the attitudes. Ann is weeping because she thought the White House was their destiny? Seriously? And Mitt has no interest in helping the party go forward, in spite of all the support the party gave him? To me, they appear to be two spoiled kids who are unhappy they didn't win the game. One is throwing a crying fit, and the other is saying he's never, ever going to play with the other kids again.
101
god this story feels good, like a perfect pair of pants.
