Huckabee is an idiot. Know who was a strong advocate of Christianity who did something even worse than today? Anders Breivik. Belief in a sky wizard doesn't preclude acting violently on irrational impulse.
2
Well he's in probably right in the sense that if we created Christian Madrassas' and forced every child to attend—thus brainwashing them into little Christian Taliban—there probably would be fewer mass shootings.

In their place there would be death camps for homosexuals and atheists.
3
More proof religion is a mental illness.
4
Man, fuck you Mike, just fuck you. Self righteous prick. And Maurice Clemmons means what in this context?
5
God is omnipotent and omnipresent. God cannot be removed from anywhere. Do you not believe that, Huckabee? How little faith you have.
6
Fuck off Mike.
7
"Should we be so surprised that schools have become a place for carnage because we’ve made it a palce where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, responsibility, accountability?"

If you're an adult and you still fail to grasp the simple fact that you don't need God in order to talk about any of these things, you have some serious, fundamental issues. Tell us, Mr. Huckabee...what exactly is your problem?
8
Fucking god-bothering idiot. Duct tape his gob closed.
9
Hey Mike, I thought your god was all-powerful, all-seeing and all-knowing; if that's so, how could you possibly remove him from ANYwhere? Are you seriously trying to argue that this whacked out freak elected to commit mass-murder on a bunch of innocent school children because he believed GOD COULDN'T STOP HIM, having been summarily banned from the classroom?

THAT is surely some fucked up shit of epic proportions...
10
I believe in a just and loving God.

Sometimes, though... Sometimes, there are situations or people, usually professed Christians, who make me yearn for a just God.

Today, Mike Huckabee better be praying his fluctuatingly fat ass off that if there is a God, that God loves Mike with a love that is deeply and overpoweringly forgiving... because that asshole should go to hell.
11
That man needs to shut his awful mouth. Like forever.
12
Yea cause God never causes people to kill each other.

13
If Huckabee's omnipotent god existed, nothing could ever happen without that god's consent. In that scenario, everything is God's will. Choosing not to act is morally equal to acting, when one has perfect knowledge of all possible outcomes. In Huckabee's universe, God killed those kids.
14
So when, exactly, *did* people talk about "eternity, life, responsibility, accountability" in schools? Was that common curriculum when Mr Huckabee was a lad? Or are those topics more appropriate for family discussions? I totally recall "responsibility and accountability" being important parts of my school education. "Life" and "eternity" are somewhat more vague topics.
15
I'll at least give The Corner credit for knowing when to just shut the fuck up, for once.
16
No form of harsh language can describe the horribly stupid comment Huckabee said.
17
All the predictable comments from NRA types just leave me numb, but the sense of rage this comment evoked. I wish there was a hell because Huckabee would burn there forever.
18
Fuck you, Mike.
19
Mike Fuck-a-bee can go fuck himself. Unfortunately his head is so far up his ass he probably can't fit anything else in there.
20
Yeah, and my co-worker just smugly said that the shooter won't be eligible for Resurrection, either, come the Resurrectin' Time....

Her opinion has just as much relevance as Mike Fuck-a-bee's....
21
IOW, none.

22
If we hadn't outlawed prayer at Batman premieres and in suburban shopping malls, none of that would have happened either, right?
23
This never would have happened if God was armed.
24
Fuck you, you fat, gluttonous ideologue. How dare you ! There is no God, because if there were you and Bryan Fisher would be dead - not 20 elementary school children !!!
25
So, is Mike Huckabee's god some sort of vampire?

If you don't invite him in, god stays outside and won't share his son's magic blood with you. So, you won't live forever, or be magically protected from bullets and shit.
26
Was there no God welcome in the house of an Arkansas governor whose youngest son David tortured and killed a dog, Mr. Huckabee?
27
Just because you guys don't believe in a higher power doesn't make you right. Systematically taking God out of the school system has happened and none of you can say that this has made our schools better. In the last 30 years prayer and any mention of God in the Pledge has been removed and the violence in this country with mass killings has grown. Maybe, there is no correlation, but you can't say for sure.
Makes me wonder who are sick ones, the hate spewers that hate God that think all conservatives are evil or the peaceful gun owners, that cling to their God, guns and their conservative values...
Liberal socialists hate spewers, what values and morals do you have? You guys want pro-choice, as long as it fits into your politically correct little box, and castrate anyone that doesn't agree...
All I can say at this point, you better hope there is no God...
My kids have grown up knowing their God loves them and they have no reason to fear death, if it should happen. I'll do anything to make them feel better and protect them.
It's a sad, sad day when you have nothing to hope for and believe in, just living day to day, waiting on that wormy hole, to rot in, good luck with that... PEACE OUT, Soulless carcasses...
28
Regardless of opinions, it is telling when people use profanity and vulgarity and viciously attack when they have a difference of opinion. What ever happened to civility and tolerance? The left seems to exhibit all of these very angry traits. I also find it interesting to see how much anality is used to express opinions. Just tell Mr. Huckabee you respectfully disagree, otherwise your offense is much greater than his.
29
A spiritual life requires humility, openness, and charity(LOVE). This arrogant, selfish, pig should go away and start over!
30
ANYONE CAN MAKE A COMMENT- ITS CALLED FREE SPEECH.
WE DON'T HAVE TO AGREE WITH THE COMMENT, BUT WHY DO WE HAVE TO BE SO HATEFUL AND GUTTER MOUTHED.
31
Why are you hating on Mike? There is no teaching of morality in schools these days, it's all the 'good and bad choices' secular bull scat that very ineffective. Without God people quickly become lost.
32
Why are you hating on Mike? There is no teaching of morality in schools these days, it's all the 'good and bad choices' secular bull scat that is very ineffective. Without God people quickly become lost. There is good and evil in the world that 'reward and punishment' mechanisms don't address. People need to learn self control not just being controlled.
33
It is hard not to be hateful when someone says something as totally stupid as what Huckabee said. Despite Mike's contentions about belief in God as the moral cure-all, atheists have the lowest percentage of the population of our prisons and have a much lower divorce rate than evangelicals. I also guess Mike is unaware of the fact that the Bible documents some horrible mass killings. They were ordered by Moses and included men, women, children, and even livestock, although virgin girls were sometimes exempt. Does anyone in their right mind really think we are going to be better off teaching the values contained in the Book of Exodus in schools. Maybe he just doesn't believe in the God of the Old Testament. The New Testement God is so much nicer. The only death he demands is his own son's, because he still hadn't gotten over being disobeyed way back when. Again, a great set of values.
34
Wow, I only stumbled into this site to see what people were saying in response to Mike answering the question. The responses on this site are shameful. They are full of hate and as evil as the act of murder the gunman himself had. I only had to read a few of these responses to know that these kinds of acts will continue to happen with individuals like the one's who responded on this site running around. Mike simply gave an honest answer to a question he was asked. He didn't go on the show preaching. The host of the show asked him a question. If you don't understand God then go and get some answers but these responses are hateful and evil. If you met Mike he would probably have you over for dinner or help you change a tire. I can see the favor would not be returned if it were u guys. God bless
35
I've never been on this site before but one thing is clear. The people who post on here are morally corrupt. Even if you disagreed with this guy why would you say so many hateful things. If you don't understand the bible then ask questions. I can help if you'd like but no one should be disrespected the way Mike is on this site just because he answered a question that he was ASKED. He didn't come on the show on his pulpit. He only answered one of the questions in a truthful manner.
36
To the guy who says the Bible documents horrible mass killings. That is correct. God ordered Moses and the Israelites to wipe out the people inhabiting the land because they were Godless, worshiping idols, sacrificing humans to these idols and doing other Godless acts. As God he had passed judgement on these people and ordered them to receive capital punishment if you will. He can do that because he is God and owns us all. God is everywhere but he chooses to remain silent because he's given us free will. That free will allows us to live and be free. We can make choices for evil or for incredible good. The murderer who killed the 26 or 28 people chose to do evil. Thank God that others will choose to do incredible acts of good and show love in response. We fuss about the evil that God allows but he also allows the good. I never hear people complain about God for that. If you are going to bash him because he didn't want to create a race of robots then at least acknowledge that all the good that has ever happened to you was due to God allowing us the freedom to be so kind. You can't have it one way and not the other
37
Mike was being open, just acknowledge that you didn't agree.
People will ask why does God allow evil? The answer is all about love. If you love someone you have to let them be free. What if you told your girlfriend what to do and where to go and basically programmed her to be your girlfriend and to love you. That begs the question if someone "loves" you for any other reason than free will, is that really love? My answer would be no. The best thing about someone loving you is that it was their choice and they chose you. They had other options but you won. That is what God wants from us. Funny, it is the same thing we want from each other too, and why? It is because we were created in His image.
38
Atheists make the claim that they don't need faith, and God and the Bible are stupid fairy tales. You actually require more faith to be an atheist I believe. All of the scientific facts about how life on this planet came to be and continues to exist point to a creator. One fact that proves this to me is the earth in relation to it's distance from the sun. Scientists have stated that if the earth were any closer to the sun then we would all be fried and if we were any further away then this place would be an icicle. The earth sits in the exact or perfect place in the universe for life on this planet to exist and it is the only one in our solar system to be so privileged. That one fact to me proves there is a God. No amount of chance or random nonsense or happenstance could say otherwise. To believe that we exist because of so many random events occurring requires more faith than any Christian will ever posses, and even more faith than believing you will win the power ball jackpot. It is in fact amazing faith.
39
When Mike says God was removed from our schools he's talking about free will. Of course in a literal sense God cannot be removed from anywhere but we can CHOOSE to have his influence removed from our lives. We did this by removing prayer and banning any kind of discussions concerning him from the classroom. Mike is pretty sharp with knowing the bible from what I can tell. He didn't error here. I wanted to clear this up because another poster seemed unclear about this.
40
@28: This is not merely a difference of opinion. This is a veiled sneer at people who died and are suffering implying that they are bad people and deserve it. If it's in bad taste to discuss gun control after such tragedies, surely it is even worse taste to suggest that a person was hurt because they didn't act within a certain religion's dogma?

And for Mr. Huckabee, the next time something terrible happens to him, I hope we will all point out that his god clearly has forsaken him since his prayers didn't help him. Maybe we should take a page from his people and pray for this life lesson to happen sooner rather than later.*

* I personally do not believe that prayer works. However, for bigots like him who do believe that praying for bad things to happen to someone does in fact work, I say that it should be legally recognized as a threat. It doesn't matter if the gun is loaded - mens rea is mens rea.
41
what about the Catholic schools? God ran rampant in those schools and still those priests....
42
The God of genocide and capricious death? (read Joshua & Judges) I think we've had more than enough of that one.
43
@28: just because someone can rub two synapses together enough to form an opinion does not mean that said opinion deserves respect.
44
Huckabee's words are awful, but not as bad as the right-wing American 'Family' Association's Bryan Fischer, who said the same thing but even more explicitly. Fischer said those people died because God is "gentleman" who "doesn't go where he's not welcome" and that's why He didn't save those children or teachers. (I'm surprised he didn't throw in some blame for gays while he was at it- he usually does. Hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. 'the gays did it.')

The bodies of the children and teachers who died yesterday weren't even cold before Fischer and Huckabee started trying to exploit this for their right-wing religious/political agenda. Despicable! And that's true even if you ARE a believer because both seem to imply that none of the victims were religious when that isn't true, but the omnipotent all-knowing creator of the universe who COULD have saved them didn't because there isn't sufficient praying to Him at that school. Who *would* pray to that sort of petty, narcissistic deity?!
45
To the new, and unregistered, posters, welcome to Slog, or as we like to call it, Fuckin' Slog!
46
What a load of shit. Huckabee is an idiot.
47
God has had a hedge of protection around the U.S., because of our founding belief in Him. Prayer was taken out of our schools. People want the ten commandments and any reference of God to be removed from public places. We are tying His hands. We are saying you are not welcome in our lives anymore. The Bible says that if we draw close to Him, He will draw close to us. P ushing Him away leaves a void for the devil to step in and to cause evil throuogh people who do his will. Our country has turned our backs on God, and we are seeing the results of it. Look out, it is going to get worse! Losss of jobs, natural disasters, terror attacks, things we can't imagine. We all will suffer, good, bad, the innocent, all of society.
48
Guns are not the problem. They need to be guided by a person to do damage.

Neglectful parents who (to their benefit) didn't learn how to model constructive and pro-social behavior for their children are a dangerous, growing phenomenon in our society.

Who's regulating/monitoring parenting skills? Because we become parents doesn't give us a "free ticket" from having mental health and interpersonal communication issues which need attention.

Metaphoric to a person who seeks to acquire a gun - a parent who is not "qualified" (has no "background check" or monitoring done for parenting/communication skills) is potentially very dangerous. Further, parents "wrap their hands around" a child, guide/"aim" their direction, and, ultimately, pull the trigger.

What we really need to give our attention to is not the gun, but who's behind the trigger?
49
@48, are you saying that it's the shooter's parents' fault for not raising him properly? Because the guy's older brother seems to have a fairly normal life.

Possibly these things are a little more complicated that you make them out to be.
50
Amazing how much ignorance, intolerance and hatred flows from your mouths, when we are all entitled to share our OPINIONS,, NOT HATE and evil. But then again, it shouldn't surprise me coming from hardened hearts and self righteous non-believers.

As the Nation Reflects So Should We
We here at Seattle School District Exposed would like to take a moment to acknowledge resent events. The loss of 26 innocent people (20 children and 6 adults) at Sandy Hook Elementary has rocked us and the nation to the very core. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the families of the victims and the families of children who's lives have been forever changed.

It has been no secret that SSDE has felt the the Seattle School District has been failing to adequately provide security and protection to our children. In light of this recent tragedy we feel obligated to once again bring this matter to the forefront.

After looking into the matter during the school board election we have found that while "Security Specialists" are assigned to High Schools and Middle Schools no Elementary School has been assigned one. The rationale behind not giving Elementary Schools "Security Specialists" is that there aren't enough "severe" incidents at Elementary Schools to need "Security Specialists". In short, employing a "Security Specialist" to stay at an Elementary School is not cost effective. A better business model being employing "Security Specialists" to mobile patrols that conduct checks and respond to Elementary Schools.

The ideal situation would be that no school would ever need security. This however is sadly not the case. While the need for security has been reduced to triage, it has been applied wrongly in this situation. The school districts criteria for security has obviously been about severe instances among students. When one looks at the elementary level of "severe" instances one must look out side the student body for the threat, children are more vulnerable to adults than any preteen or teen. It is the violence of others that we must take into account.

Every High School in the district has at least two security guards some three. Every middle school has one. But not one is assigned to an Elementary School. These "Mobile Security Specialists" are to make security checks and respond to "Severe" incidents at Elementary Schools. The thought that they respond to trouble is somewhat comforting, but that they would have a response time like the police is not.

This is something that we feel needs to be addressed. This is not meant to be confrontational or political, now is not the time for hyperbole. We as a community, and as a city, have to look at these children and ask ourselves if our pride is worth more to us than protecting our children.
