Dang Charles, no Last Poets reference? I'm disappointed.
2
Wow. They're not even preempting those tweets with "I'm not racist, but...."
3
according to gawker ... the first tweet in that bunch was from a UNA Div II football player ... or was ... https://twitter.com/UNAAthletics/status/…

4
And you know those little fuckers wouldn't say that shit aloud. Why they think the internet is OK baffles me.
5
Let's be very accurate here: I believe that, in one of those tweets, the term "sand n!gger" is bigotry directed against people of Arab heritage, as opposed to the other examples of bigotry directed against people of Black heritage. Wouldn't want to get their ignorant hatefulnesses confused, and all that.
6
@3 for the instant total schadenfreude victory.

4,

its not that hard to understand. A computer is a piece of furniture sitting in your home. this creates an illusion that what one does with a computer is an entirely private affair.Portable devices such as smart phones, tablets and the like still have a feel of intimacy about them, since small screens seemingly inhibit snoopers.

Ever notice how defensive people get when using a public computer if someone is standing behind them?

The internet is a public space that feels like a private space. Its not tangibly real, and the things you do online feel like thoughts. This is why its so easy to dox people. The victim always makes it so easy to take advantage of their private data.

its also why social networking exists at all. Would anyone really want to see the stuff they post on FB or twitter or reddit as the headline on a newspaper? Would anyone want their profiles on Grindr or Adam4Adam or Manhunt shown on TV? They might as well be, as easy as it is to access them, but we don't think of it that way.

So, while we all sit here in awe at how stupid Mr Ortiz really is, lets remember how stupid we are when we post personal data online, too.

Everyone on the internet knows you are a dog.
8
If they don't want to listent to them, they should not have imported so many of them. At the very least one would think that anyone could appreciate the novetly of a nigger president, similar to how the parrots of Telegraph hill were appreciated even by those who claim to hate parrrots.
9
I'm glad that the internet is destroying the careers of racist filth.
10
It's almost... quaint to see someone use the n-word unironically. It's like seeing a lady in a floor-length gown with a high lacy neck and a bustle walking down the street carrying a lorgnette.
11
Get this black guy off my TV screen so I can watch black guys play football! No one ever said racism had to be rational.
12
Man, why do you repost that hateful shit? Does it really contribute to some kind of meaningful dialogue?
13
Goaltender Tim Thomas will gladly accept Mr. Patterson on his hockey team.
14
Where there is oxygen to breath, there will also be ignorant idiots...
15
@12 for the win.

Really, do we need to see this disgusting trash? It's not helping to repost this. It's only adding to the pain. You dishonor the President and the grieving families by directing our attention to these idiots.
16
I'm thinking this person might be mentally unstable and therefore should not own a gun:

Liz Michael

"I am a Native American. The United States government has always been my enemy, and it will always be my enemy, forever, until we destroy and overturn it.

I'm a "gun slut". I love guns so much they could be considered my sexual orientation.

Warning label. I'm a potty mouth. I'm a slut. I'm a flirt. I'm a lesbian. I'm a domme. I'm a cougar. I'm a transsexual and was born intersex: it may fuck with your mind some, but it happened 35 years ago. (If you thought I was hot, and this disturbs you, not my problem.) I'm a Ron Paul supporter. I'm a Jew, whose rabbi is Rav Yashua ben Yosef HaNozri. I used to date strippers and prostitutes. Since I'm related to the royal families of Europe and the Bushes, I may be a Reptilian: I don't really think I am, but be careful around my tail, and as always we are at peace.

Some evangelicals believe I am Satan. Would that the world were that lucky.

Ethnicity for those who care about it. Tuscarora, Meherrin, Nansemond and Cheraw. Also Indian from Surat, India. European ancestry from almost every country in Europe...you name it, I am it. Melungeon. In terms of Africa, one ancestor from Morocco, and another from Nigeria.

The United States government has become an enemy to America. Start planning for secession/violent revolution. Plant home gardens. I am now a "Domestic Extremist". Always was.

Two time candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, three time candidate for the California legislature. Former county committeewoman. Descended from King David, Joseph ben Eli the father of Jesus, Joseph of Arimethea, Charles Martel, Odin, Constantine, Charlemagne, Lady Godiva and a host of others. John Adams is my fourth cousin."
17
@12
I think I get what you're asking. All the comments above yours have no meaning for me. A blur. The racist comments - a blur. A meaningless faux conversation.
18
San Antonio PD are investigating a shooting at the Santikos Mayan 14 Theater. I wonder now if US Citizenship exams will include first-person shooter simulations of theaters, schools, churches...

19
@ 12, @ 17

I disagree. Pull these folks out of the darkness and into the light, for all to see.

Sure, most of them are probably just dumbasses in their mother's basements, but a few of them might be the next crazy bastard who joins W.A.R. or decides Jesus wants him to fire bomb a mosque.

Plus, it's always good to remember that these people are amongst us.
20
And their racism will hopefully live on within the tubes of the Internet (and continue biting them in the ass) forever, thanks to that "Hello there, Racists" blog, as Dan posted about a month ago.
21
@19, we are unable to forget these people are amongst us. Why publish it?
23
@21
Publish them so that they have to claim they were hacked or someone stole their password or whatever and they they would NEVER use words like that.
24
Is it worth posting this? Well, it's nice to know that the first tweet is from a football player at U of Northern Alabama who has just been kicked off the team for this.

And there's always that option of ignoring the post and not bothering to make any comments.
25
@ 21, actually, we're all to ready to forget that these people are among us. And the right wing WANT us to forget that they exist. You've probably seen all the casual accusations of "playing the race card," which are nothing more than a denial that racism even exists anymore. Posts like this are the answer.
26
These tweets are nothing more than hateful cussing in the privacy of your own homes. So yes, why publicize it?
27
Charles, you were so pleased recently to tell us about the guy who disappeared in Alaska while looking for solitude. Humans are a social species, you say, are meant to live clustered together. How does that theory explain this killer's motives and these awful tweets?
28
@25 well put.
29

These Tweets are almost as bad as SLOG anonymous comments.
30
@26
If that were so then how were they found and collected?
By way of analogy, maybe the people were sitting in their own homes, but they were speaking loud enough to be heard by others.
And you've been answered on the "why publicize it".
They should be publicized so that the racism is shown.
31
@25 -- Exactly.
32
@26: "These tweets are nothing more than hateful cussing in the privacy of your own homes."

Is me telling you to go fuck yourself being done in the privacy of my own home? I suppose it is!
33
@30 - The point is that the twitterverse has given people the luxury of voicing their banal opinions nearly free of public repercussions. After a while, the noise becomes meaningless, so then we need to differentiate opinions from behavior.
34
There's a big difference between listening to every stupid, nasty piece of crap and not realizing that it's out there. After the recent Presidential campaign, anyone who doesn't know it's out there isn't even literate enough to read these disgusting tweets. And I'd bet Charles knows that and is just yanking chains.
35
Bigotry thrives when it remains unchallenged. When it's "just understood," and your folks and co-workers can nod knowingly about "those people" and never be challenged to explain just what it is they believe.

Yeah, sure, these folks aren't hiding. But they *were* hiding to their acquaintances. The UNA coaching staff & faculty were most likely in the dark as to the extent of Mr. Patterson's unreasonable antagonism.

My question to Gurldoggie & the rest would be why you're afraid to look at what is going on in America? I find their language disgusting, their ideas horrible & disturbing, and it's certainly not comfortable reading. And yet I am glad it's out there, as it reminds me that this shit is still floating around, that no matter how many wonderful people have seen the light, there remains ignorance and hate in our country.

We've had many victories, but there's still a lot of work to do.
36
Don't bother me none. Hell ya should hear the way Michelle and I blast some of those honkies down at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue!
37
@ 34, is this "every" piece of stupid, nasty crap? Or just a taste?

I'll reiterate - some people are all too willing to forget and ignore. Not you specifically; this isn't for you. This is for them. There's a purpose to be served by exposing this. You don't have to like it, but I hope you can live with it.
38
@33
"After a while, the noise becomes meaningless, so then we need to differentiate opinions from behavior."

Differentiate all you want to.
Publicly shaming these people shows the other racists that it is not acceptable.
39
@34 Charles is always yanking chains.
40
Sports fanatics. Probably the biggest children around since actual children.
41
@ 40, anti-sports bigotry is pretty rare on Slog these days. Thanks for stepping up.
42
Nothing good came of Obama interrupting football. I had to turn the TV off because I'm not subjecting my daughter to endless blather about a massacre. We'd been having a nice time reading and watching football together, something I remember doing with my dad and a treasured family activity.

If America wants to stop mass shootings, America needs to stop giving the shooters all the coverage possible.
43
Question about these racist Tweets.

They all seem to be made by "young people".

Yet, wasn't this the demographic that went most strongly for the Democrat in the last election?

Explain.
44
@43 - Explanation: The world isn't as black and white as you believe it is.
45
@43 -- you're not that dense. Are you?
46
@42 Hear, hear!

Meanwhile, regarding the tweets in question... I'm old enough to remember when we thought that extending the internet to the masses would inspire, elevate, educate and fuel a race to the top.

Maybe it does for some of us, but those troglodytes and bumpkins at the bottom are just using it to have a grand party in their own filth. It's kinda depressing, isn't it?
47
@42, what are you suggesting? That no one talk about this? Should all crime go un-reported?
48
Assholes - every single one of them. This country is screwed up BIG TIME.
49
@4 - When I lived in Alabama, I heard that shit aloud all the time. And it wasn't half as bad there as it was in St. Louis.
50
@47- Surely you can tell the difference between "going unreported" and "the President giving a prime time address".

And I'm suggesting that the national news should note it, that the local news should cover it locally. Making a national celebrity of every mass killer makes more mass killers while at the same time making the nation more fearful and prone to stupidity (like three-strikes laws and gun bans that don't really ban much of anything.)
51
If you look at hate speech on twitter you will see that blacks and Muslims are as likely to perpetrate it as whites, if not more so. Gawker, the Stranger and other publications highlight every hateful comment made on twitter by whites towards black people or Muslims. I can assure you there are as many hateful comments by black people and Muslims towards women, gays, Jews, and Asians. So why does the media obsess over white on black racism and Islamaphobic coments while turning a blind eye to equally offensive things by both groups? Democratic incumbent Marion Barry's anti-Asian tweets is one good example. Patricia Mccallister's anti-Jewish screed at OWS LA is another. If these were whites spewing that kind of hatred against blacks or Muslims it would have gotten 100000 times the media coverage.

Please wait...
