Hilarious. It was a train wreck, but good luck Jodie Foster!
2
Nobody is talking about how deeply tragic it was. I had so much second-hand cringe "yikes, that is sad" when she made her (apparently) final hollywood sign off with

"Jodi was here, I still am, and I want to be seen, to be understood deeply and to be not so very lonely"

Aside from anything else, Jodie's was the most over-over-rehearsed speech, ever. At least if it had sounded spontaneous, she could have gotten away with some of it. Nervous people do sometimes talk like that. But that was all scripted, sounded it, and was too cutesy by far.

The Onion, on the other hand, was perfect.

She came out in 2007. She did not come out at the Golden Globes since she had already done that 5 years ago.

Apparently American journalists don't know how to use Google before writing a story.

Search for "Jody Foster Gay". Here's the fourth entry:

Besides, who cares?

Plus, she gets a pass as far as I'm concerned:

One reason for guarding her privacy so intently was because she was the victim of stalkers earlier in her career, including John Hinckley, the man who shot President Reagan.

Here's another article, from November 2012 describing how she is already "out" and that she will be the first openly gay woman to win the lifetime achievement award:

No matter what we thought of the speech, rambling terror, determined privacy plea, brave coming out talk, I think we can all agree that no one should date Jodie Foster until she gets some therapy.
8
Let us also hope she never gets to make her "poor misunderstood Leni Reifenstahl" movie with her best buddy, Mel Gibson.
9
If she spent as much time studying "effective public communication" as she does on her apparent Pilates obsession, I might have some idea what she was actually trying to say.
10
OMG! Who's next? Ricky Martin? Anderson Cooper?
11
I blame Mel Gibson.

Stalking is no joke, but it's not an excuse. Many celebs, mostly straight, are stalked by a nutter or two.

If she had come out 10 or even 5 years ago it would have made a big impact. Despite her relationship breakdown which is hardly unusual in Hollywood, she is a positive role model for the queer community.

All she had to say was "I am gay, I am proud and happy with who I am. PS, I'm single."
14
Jodie doesn't get a pass. Every time someone dances around "I'm gay" and doesn't actually say it clearly, he or she confirms to children that being gay is shameful. It's that simple.

Shame on Jodie.
15
She doesn't need a pass. She came out forever ago. The only crime here was against public speaking.
16
She was "out" in the way that we all knew for the past 20+ years. I give her a pass because she never denied it or dated men as a cover. She knew everyone knew, and there was no need to go on tv and talk about it.
17
Her profession as an actor is notable - this is what she does - act. What film goers do is buy tickets to see her act. She owes us nothing more. Scripted speech? D'ya think? Melissa Leo could have used a scripted speech a few years ago. Mixed messages - get a spoon, stir.

Seriously. Give her a fucking break. Everybody knew she was a lesbian for over two decades, to the public she officially came out five years ago, and this was a rehearsed speech from an actor.

Exactly how many fucking times does a person need to come out? Her family knew. Her former partner knew. Her kids knew. Her friends and coworkers knew. Everybody knew. She made a statement in 2007 in case anybody was really worried that she wasn't out enough. There were articles all over the fucking place about her coming out.

Blasting her for not being out is ludicrous when she already came out.
19
I was able to find a way to focus on what is clearly a painful time for her regarding her mother, who apparently is suffering from Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia.
20
I really loved Maverick.

@13: "If she had come out 10 or even 5 years ago"

She did come out 5 years ago, so we're all cool now, right? She fulfilled her duties?
22
As always, the Onion hit the nail on the head.

As for the actual speech, I thought she was going to say "I am gay" because I knew she was, and instead all the buildup led to "I'm single." Basically, she very publicly announced her divorce/split from her partner. That part was news to me.

Please wait...
