There's people who love comics so much they would travel 173 miles for comics, even crossing state lines, but they don't love comics quite enough go to a second comics convention one week after just going to one.

Even buying gas is mutually baffling. Not worth it.

Remember to wash your costumes ... or at least dry clean them.

which means cosplayers can pretty much stay in costume all year long.

I'd venture to guess that most of them already do that anyway.

I'd actually consider this as a pretty shitty move. I attend gaming cons, and I would never be able to attend two in a row. I have one of those job thingies.

While ECCC is a pretty awesome event, Wizards will be able to blow them out of the water in spending and celebrity support. They have more national contacts and money to be sure.

It seems like a blatant attempt to put them out of business which seems like an asshole thing to do in such a niche community.

I do the Seattle-Portland trip every weekend. Its not bad at all, especially if you use the bus or train. You could very easily go to both conventions, Saturday and Sunday. Worst case scenario, you had your heart set on doing 3 days at both, but can only get 1 friday off work, so you have to pick which is your favorite.

tl;dr: get over it.

Not sure many of you are getting it. Many of the guests are the same and will be there first. So, now many of the folks who might have traveled here from Portland or Vancouver, WA or whatever won't bother coming here. ECCC relies in regional exclusivity.

It would be like The Book of Mormon opening at ACT a week before another production at The Paramount opened.

That's not the best analogy, but you get it.

The majority of people are unlikely to do both, and this will hurt attendance at both. The guy who founded Wizard World is a famous monster of Filmland whose magazine changed the comics industry for the worse forever and whose conventions regularly try to undercut local conventions. They've even battled the New York Comic Con.

He's stepped down, or was forced out, but it looks like his legacy of infamy continues.

@5 Is grossly overestimating WizardWorld's reach and competence.
They've never run a show that's been popular and the highlight of any of their shows is usually the wrestling ring they set up in the middle of the dealer's room.
ECCC has little to worry about. WizardWorld has money and nothing else.

There seems to be a slew of misconceptions here...

5 - It is a coincidence, though. WW was going to do their NOLA show this time of year, but had to move it back to Nov. because of the Super Bowl. If that had not happened, the Portland event would happen some other time of year.

And I guarantee WW is not trying to put ECCC out of business. A bigger fan culture means more fans all around. The more people into comics and related culture, the better. Besides, WW is a pretty small company too. Always has been. (the phrase "convention conglomerate" used above is tremendously overstated)

7 - There are unique guests to each. Adam Hughes and Peter David for ECCC, and Gail Simome and Stan Lee for PCC. There are others, as well.

Yr comparing modern decisions simply to spread to other parts of the country to a time for the company that was less than reputable. And even many of the stories about Gareb are embellished by folks who have separate gripes. :\

ALSO... this one is important... the idea that WW "battled" NYCC is absurd. Yes, their cons were both scheduled on the same weekend, but WW held their '09 con in October, as one of the '08 cons was held in November. Until THAT point, NYCC was held in spring. NYCC moved their con to October in 2010 after it merged with the Anime Fest. So, was there a conflict? Yes. Who was at fault, though...

8 - Philly draws large crowds. So does NOLA. So does Austin. And Chicago is the third biggest in the country. In fact, when no one else wanted to save our con back in 1998... WIZARD DID. Without them, we'd have been lost...

Gotta get the full picture, y'all. :)
