A woman's body is to remain sacrosanct, and all decisions made regarding her body are to be made by her and her alone.

I also hold firm to the notion that women should receive equal pay for the work they perform, should not be barred from any job posting (including combat duty), and that women are as competent is every respect as their male counterparts in every field of endeavor.

I sort of understand how it is that GLBT people such as myself wound up getting attacked by the majority os society, since we are a very small minority, and it's always easier to attack people who are few in number. But women constitute over half the human population. How it is that they became the subordinates in society worldwide mystifies me. By sheer force of numbers, they should be the dominant force in any even semi-democratic society. And yet, worldwide, they are not.

Strangely, a gay man such as myself has to come out in support of women's rights in order for this clear majority of the human species to have those rights. And even stranger still, this position is held by some to be radical.

What a very odd world we inhabit.

I want to thank Planned Parenthood and all the independent clinics (like Cedar River) who have struggled to keep reproductive healthcare available in the face of a political establishment prone to using women's rights as a pawn in their election campaigns. Cheers!

Roe's lawyer Sarah Waddington is speaking at Town Hall tonight! Sold out, but there may be cancellations at the last minute. The Times sent Brodeur to talk to her: http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2…

I <3 you Tacoma Traveler.

It's just too bad it takes Americans so fucking long to figure out the truth. Everything has to be hashed out and argued over with religious crazies all the time.
6
Good to hear this. The country is moving in the right direction on some crucial issues (gun control, women's reproductive rights, gay rights).

@1,

That's always puzzled me as well. How and why did women become such second-class humans? I would venture to guess that it had a lot to do with pregnancy and babies. Primitive men who were aggressive conquerors and rapists would probably have had a slight genetic advantage over men who were more docile. The reverse is probably true for primitive women, since being aggressive would likely lead to more miscarriages or more abandoned/orphaned infants.

Over time, this would have led to aggressive, dominant males and docile, subservient females.

Just a guess though.

Roe v. Wade is status quo.

It is Conservative to support RvW.

@1, 7

We can thank religion for propping up the treatment of women as servile male possessions, whose only existence is to please and provide babies to men.

It's never too late to change, folks. Instead of judging the women who passively accept much of what is handed to them, be supportive. Be supportive of the millions of moms who are left raising children alone. Be supportive of the teenaged girls who began dieting at age 11 so they will be socially acceptable and desirable mates. We're fucked up in so many ways - just being kind and demonstrating confidence in some of those people would go a long way towards reaching the equality we believe to be possible and necessary.

@1 and 7: and yet, not all societies evolved this way. For example, Cherokee women had dominant roles in their society.
12
@8: Then why are the conservatives in this country so opposed to it? Riddle me that, dumbass.
13
@7,

Your theory doesn't hold up to how contemporary hunter-gatherer societies operate. Those societies are relatively egalitarian and practice strict population control to prevent overcrowding/overuse of resources.
14
@12 cause they be stupid.
15
@13,
Ok, but there are very few hunter-gatherer societies. Most hunter-gatherers either became farmers or were driven out by farmers millenia ago.

9,

Yes, religion is utter bullshit. But why is it that region came to enforce male rather than female dominance? If over half the human population is female, and religion can only exist in the minds of humans, why is it that the majority of the humans on Earth haven't imagined religion in a way that represents their interests?

How has 49% of the planet hijacked 51%?

And not even all 49%, since there are a number of males such as myself that utterly reject the idea of female inferiority.

@15: The Cherokee were farmers *and* hunters, until driven out by white marauders.

Please wait...
