I think the celebration may be a bit early. The new pope most likely wont be more progressive and could be much worse.
2
I know exactly how you feel. I was equally ebullient when Heber J. Grant was called home to Xenu.

But you know how it will be.... Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

They're all vermin.

The old reign of cruelty and oppression is over!!!

Prepare yourselves for a whole new reign of cruelty and oppression!!!

lol

You do know they're going to pick another one, right? The post will still be filled.

6
I bet they'll have a hard time filling it, who wants to be new pope with old pope still hanging around?

7
Anyone with any feelings at all about this one way or the other needs to find something better to do with their time.

What's to celebrate? The next pope will be worse. He will double down on Ratzi's regressive policies, continue to use the Church's institutional power to enable and protect child rapists (while whining about the unfairness of it all), and suck cock on the DL in between hateful homilies explaining to the world how gay people are "intrinsically disordered".

Here's the real song of the moment:

There are all kinds of signals that Ratzi will continue to wield influence. There are all kinds of things that could have been done differently if they wanted to clearly differentiate the new from the old.

"Pope Emeritus"?!

@5 - Yes, but the next one will be the last one. Viz:

_____ Petrus Romanus, qui paſcet oues in multis tribulationibus: quibus tranſactis ciuitas ſepticollis diruetur, & Iudex tremẽdus iudicabit populum ſuum. Finis.

_____ 112. Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills [i.e. Rome] will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End.

"Many tribulations", I'll say! I would hate to be elected Pope right now, what with all the sex crimes coming to light, papal butlers leaking documents, and the rich, western Catholics leaving the church in droves. Droves! Crap job. In a way, I actually pity the fool to takes the position. But not too much.

@1,

I remember when Benedict was chosen some liberal commenters were talking about how the next pope will probably be African, with an implication that that would somehow be a good thing. African religious leaders are extremely regressive. We'll be lucky if an African pope only takes the church back a hundred years (and not a thousand).

The world was better off when the Benadict as pope. He was a repulsive man who drove people away from the Church.

JPII was a charismatic figure. He had the same regressive agenda, but people loved him. It would be horrible to get another pope who was popular enough to breath life into churches.
15
@14, it's kind of interesting that JPII became totally identified with the papacy; almost no one remembers that his name for most of his life was Karol Wojtyła (KAR-uhl voy-TEE-wah, more or less).

On the other hand, almost everyone in or out of the Catholic church thinks of the most recent pope as Joseph Ratzinger. Yet now, when he should be disappearing from public consciousness forever, he wants to be known as His Holiness the Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI.

They ought to bust him clear down to buck private.

Please wait...
