I'm a woman and am happy to read a guy's perspective on the show—I saw it with another woman last night and loved it, but both of us wanted to know what men in the audience were thinking (especially the one the dancer eyed during the fisting sketch!)

I am just so so glad I live in a city/country where this kind of art can happen and audiences are open to it. That performance was life-affirming; it was just a great night all around.

It's pretty sad that Brendan has to preface his review with "I'm a straight white guy, so my opinions don't matter."

You've been taught to hate yourself, B. Unlearn it.

I don't hate myself. But given the show's content and politics, my perspective is probably not the most interesting one. I'm more interested in how it landed for other people (for once).

Given that the show is about feminism and gender, and you are the most culturally "normative" demographic, there is a strong argument that your perspective is valuable to the typical audience for this type of work.

Just sayin'... Don't discount yourself because of your sex or race. That's not fair to anyone.

Note to self - preface all future comments on feminism with heaps of self deprecation.

Great review, it really makes me want to see the show. And I for one am happy that you acknowledge that straight-white-man is the lens you saw the show through. The refrain "five women and one trans person" bothered me a bit. Did you have a chance to talk to the 'trans person' and find out how they self-identify? Because I kept thinking, "Is the trans person not a woman?"

Good review, Brendan. Here's a similar take from a female perspective:

@ 6. Young Jean Lee sent out a letter to critics specifying how, exactly, the trans person would like to be identified in print. I followed Lee's suggestions.
