"The baby and the 2-year-old child are safe and have been turned over to family."

Uhh... not sure that I'd consider that family to be "safe".
2
I don't even know where to start, but this has the makings of a Slog comment thread of epic proportions!
3
@1: My present family contains one or two dipshits who I wouldn't trust for directions to the men's room. The prior generation (1940s-1980s) included a probable murderer and her accomplice. And the vast majority of those remaining would be safe hands for a kid, or even a baby - both generations. Because they're normal and sane people with normal and sane lives, and by that I don't necessarily mean "straight and conventional."

Pull your fucking head out, willya?

5
@4:

"Police said the dogs were being raised for sale and for fighting."

6
as your name is "Chicago Fan", do you mean a fan of the city of Chicago? I can get behind that, no problem. But if you mean, "Fan of all professional sports teams of Chicago", does that include the Bears? Because, as everyone from everywhere outside of Chicago knows, which is 7.1 billion people (minus ~ 5 million), The Bears Still SUCK. Always have, always will.

I'm going to suggest using your real name if you expect anyone to give a shit what you think about some terrible thing that happened in Idaho. Are you a paid reporter for the Stranger? Does it say "Chicago Fan" on your paycheck? Or, maybe I'm wrong to believe that anyone at the Stranger gets paid to be a reporter.
7
@6 You must be new here. Chicago Fan is Dan Savage's brother, and also a university professor.
8
When drugs are legalized, how will dipshit hair-trigger inbred homicidal hillbillies make money?
9
@6 That's Dan Savage's brother you're talking to clown town.
10
70 pit bulls raised for fighting, and not one of them devoured the baby??!?
11
@6 can we then assume that you are one Wilbur Ackbar, and you posted your comment from a distant galaxy and time?
13
@6: I hate to say it, but this is one of a tiny number of Internet venues (two, to be exact) where I DON'T use my own name. I'm a great believer in the WELL standard of 'you own your own words', but I'm not at all convinced that opinions here won't draw annoyances outside the SLOGosphere.

And that is leading to more and more consideration on my part of the late BBC DJ John Peel's comment: "I would rather spend my time among the naive and well-intentioned, than among the sophisticated and malign."
14
Sounds like "good riddance" would be the most appropriate reaction
15
I hope a rescue will step in and save/ rehab the dogs. Has one yet??
@ 5, great moniker. Our 2nd pit bull is Valkyrie, more often called Valdookie or Valdooks. The street kids we adopted her from were kinda obsessed w/ Vikings and Norse mythology
16
@3 cool story, bro
17
<--- BIG fan of Chicago fan.
18
@16: hipster sneer FTW
19
Those dogs, if raised for fighting, are unfortunately F'd in the head, unpredictable killing machines now. Not suited for life off a tight lead 24/7. Sad. And yes the kids too, sad... but they get to go on unleashed and procreate after their tainted childhood. Scary.
20
Interesting story. I wonder what new details will develop over the coming days. Perhaps this scene will be less confusing after the investigators have a chance to fill in some details.

Until then, I hesitate to speculate. Idaho is a very weird place, and it makes a fitting setting for such strange events. I presume that the pot growing operation was fairly large given that there were tractors on the property. If so, that may have been the impetus for the dog breeding operation, which later could've taken on a life of it's own. Given the illegality and the scale of these ventures, gunplay was probably inevitable.

I'm less than impressed with the SL Trib's typos ("They dead were identified" and then naming two of the victims after stating that this was a triple murder). I would expect that from myself or some commenter on a blog, but journalists at a major regional paper should know better than to let something this sloppy go live.
21
It's possible these people were also shot by dogs. It's been going around.
22
" Beyond my ability to get my head around."
-Chicago fan.

So it is kinda like the idea of inalienable civil rights.
23
Sweet mother of God!!!!! Not PITBULLS!!!!!!!!!!
24
Every tragic death that involves guns is a golden opportunity to tout their virtues.
25
@22 - Stop projecting. Most sane people realize we have an organized militia already and don't need whackos like you trying to make their own.
26
Gun nuts are the Phoenix Jones of well regulated militias.
27
I'm sure if guns were outlawed, the bad guys would have just given these folks wedgies and indian rope burns and then had a good laugh about it.

Anyhow...

Can we talk about how insanely, jaw-droppingly hot the girl in the Sassafras ad is?
28
Hmm, so Chicago Fan isn't your real name.

Anyway, I don't know what it is about Idaho, but, some crazy shit goes on there.
Not enough lithium in the water, I guess.
29
It is impossible to turn the dial without someone, in some show, brandishing a gun.

24/7, 365.

30
Ok, beyond categories, whatever... but why does this story have the "religion" tag?
31
Pit bulls thrive on a balanced vegan diet. The world's longest living dog (27 years) recently was completely vegan.
32
If I click on the link, I hope there will be bicycle lanes and Catholic priests involved.
33
Perhaps Chicago Fan's head's ability to get around is worn out because of the nonstop mayhem in his own fair city.

Three people shot to death in a locale associated with drugs and mean dogs; what- that would show up on page 14 in the Chicago paper?

So easy to sneer down our nose at Idaho, so ironic when we live on the cutting edge of the end of civilization.

right Bro?
34
wrap your head around this, dumbass.....

"Only eight days into 2013, Chicago is already on a grim pace to not only continue the bloody trend of an elevated homicide rate -- but to surpass it.

NBC Chicago pointed out that, as of Sunday, 12 people had been murdered in Chicago this year, which, at a rate of two a day, but the city on a pace for a devastating 730 homicides...."
35
here's more, asswipe

April 1, 2013

"Twenty-five people were wounded in gun violence over the weekend in Chicago.

Two of the more than two dozen victims were fatally shot. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, 23-year-old Eugenio Solano was walking in the 1800 block of North Francisco with a 44-year-old man at 8:05 p.m. Friday when a group of three men approached them, asked for directions and opened fire. Solano was shot in the chest and died at the scene, while the other man suffered a non-fatal wound to his hand.

Solano -- whom his family described as funny, happy and "a people person" -- was gunned down the day before hosting a birthday party for his 4-year-old son, according to DNAinfo Chicago.

more. always more.

"A 15-year-old girl was shot dead over the weekend in Chicago's South Side.

Police say the teen girl, Ashaya Miller of Hammond, Ind., was shot "several times" around 8:50 p.m. in the 500 block of Ingraham Avenue, according to the Tribune.

The Calumet City Police Chief told CBS Chicago Miller was visiting friends or relatives in the suburb when someone shot through a kitchen window, striking the teen with a bullet.

Miller was taken to an Oak Lawn hospital where she was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. Police were still looking for a shooter as of Monday.

The 15-year-old's death came the same weekend that two were killed in the city and 11 more injured in violent deaths in Chicago.

DNAinfo Chicago reports 37-year-old Sanchez Mixon was beaten to death on the 47th Street Green Line 'L' platform while fighting with another man just before noon Saturday. Mixon was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Later Saturday night, 16-year-old Arrell Monogan was shot in the shoulder in the 2400 block of West 58th Street in the city's Gage Park neighborhood, according to the Sun-Times. The South Chicago teen was shot around 7 p.m. Saturday and pronounced dead less than 90 minutes later.

According to the Sun-Times, 11 more injuries were reported around town over the weekend, including a 15-year-old boy who was shot in the head in Lawndale Sunday afternoon and a sergeant with the Metra police department was stabbed in the leg several times trying to break up a fight at Union Station.

There were been five other homicides in Chicago, according to RedEye's homicide tracker, including 6-month old Jonylah Watkins who was shot on March 11.

@ 31, link or it didn't happen.

"Gun nuts are the Phoenix Jones of well regulated militias. "
--Pridge Wessa

Thank you for that! Best Slog line all weekend!
39
@15: usually when cops go into a drug bust, the first thing they do is shoot the dogs if they're not caged so they don't have to fight them off. In this case they may be alleging they were fighting dogs so they don't have to talk about shooting them. Happened to a relative of mine with a weed farm and rottweilers.
40
Rather than a pot deal gone wrong, this might have been a fighting-dog deal gone wrong. Freakin' bizarre.
41
@22
"So it is kinda like the idea of inalienable civil rights."

Or, possibly, that a criminal who raises fighting dogs can also be a woman?
Or that a female criminal who raises fighting dogs can also be a mother?
Or that a criminal who raises fighting dogs can also be a mother who tries to protect her children?

He's spent so long attempting to portray anyone who disagrees with him as a "gun nut" that he's lost the ability to understand that most other people are NOT single issue caricatures.
42
@38 - Thank you! We'd all be safer if he carried a pistol instead of pepper spray, right?

@41 - most other people are NOT single issue caricatures.

You, 5280, Cascadian Bacon, NancyBalls... tell me again how you're not?
44
@19. Not true. With the right resources, some of the dogs could be rehabbed. Something like 51 of the 54 dogs rescued from the Vick fighting ring went on to lead varying levels of normal lives (See The Lost Dogs for an accurate tally).
This story is straight up tragic. Can not imagine the levels of violence and nastiness these poor children have already been exposed to.
45
@37, @43

Or if you have a distaste for propaganda and awkwardly untrue assertions, you can read about the world's longest-living dog here. Spoiler alert: the dog lived to 29, not 27. And ate meat, exclusively.
46
@31 is confused--that dog survived by eating vegans.
47
@42: 5280 has been a SLOG contrarian for at least five years, because he and I were among the few Hillary fans here. He's no more single issue than any number of anti gun nuts such as C'thullu'u'blerghhhh or whatever his name is.
48
@43: That article cites Bramble by linking to a PETA writeup, which doesn't actually cite any sources about her. A quick internet search was unable to find any reference to her in the Guinness World Records site, and the only primary source I was able to find regarding her made NO mention as to whether or not she was vegan. There was also considerable disagreement among secondary sources as to whether she died at 26 or 27, suggesting that her story has been mangled and altered.

The PETA article also claimed that cats can live well on vegan diets, while it is well known to science that cats are OBLIGATE carnivores and require a variety of nutrients that are not found in vegetable matter.
49
Oh, hell, Sven, I go back a lot longer than that (almost to the beginning). But it's good someone remembers.

I still think Hillary would have been the best choice, too.
50
@ 43, in addition to @48's astute observations calling the veracity of PeTA's claims into doubt, the PeTA link also said this: "The nutritional needs of dogs and cats are easily met with a balanced vegan diet and certain supplements."

Um, no. The need for supplements prove that veganism for carnivores like dogs is bad. Dogs eating meat get all the nutrients they need the way they are meant to get them. And, just as with meat for humans, meat for pets should come from ethical sources.

Forcing cats and dogs to veganism is animal abuse. If you simply can't stand to feed meat to your pets, don't keep any.
51
3 Idahoans raised 64 pit bulls and 2 human children.

At this rate, pit bulls will have humans in Idaho massively outnumbered in a very few generations.
52
All this story needed for a perfect Slog Storm is a bicyclist getting hit by one of the tractors...
53
This thread is hilarious...thanks for the laughs everyone :-)
54
45/48/50: The longest-living vegan dog died, it was the world record holder in the early 2000's. Obviously there is a lot of turnover for longest living dog.

Vegan dogs do great on a balanced diet. Vegan cats do as well, although it's much trickier, and requires supplements since they require nutrients that only naturally occur with meat. There's nothing special about the nutrients in meat that can't be replaced with certain plants or supplements, though.
55
@31:
... recently was completely vegan.

So, right before it died, possibly out of sheer misery, it was vegan?
56
@54: And anything that is possible must be mandatory?
57
@8: Do you even realize what a small population you're talking about?

Quit being a galvanizing dick. Then again, that's probably all you know how to do, is make fallacies. And no, I didn't make an ad hominem attack: you ARE galvanizing people, and that's generally considered a dickish thing to do. Unless your IQ begins with a decimal point, in which case it's considered the obvious answer.

Tell me something: Why are you Poisoning the Well and Ad Hominem attacking people who aren't here and don't care what you say, anyways? What is the point of shouting at the top of your lungs that you hate a people that is already hated by a sizable majority of the nation, for no reason other than you can't get wifi there? (And actually, you can.) Why do you so vehemently hate a group of people as though they were worse than the Westboro Baptists (may the founders and parents rot, and the children see truth), when they're mostly just living peaceful lives, and doing everything you think we all should be doing, only better (living off the land, not creating 300 metric fucktons of CO2, living simpler lives, not so much fighting nature as living in a sort of harmony with it)? Every liberal that walks in the big city could learn about 10 things about living from the "dipshit hair-trigger inbred homicidal hillbillies" just by LOOKING at them. From actually opening their minds, and talking to them honestly? They might change their whole worldview.

Please wait...
