It's bad enough they rebooted Spider-Man after, what, ten years? Superman, however, seems to get rebooted once a week. Just fucking stop.

This movie seems to miss what little appeal the character actually has. Superman is an archetype--the 4-color, broad strokes force for unarguable good.

Superman should be light and fun and heroic. If you want to do a grim and gritty story of moral ambiguity about a world that Fears and Hates Him, do it with a different character. Let Superman be Superman.

I'm still not convinced on Amy Adams as Lois Lane (the girl in the shot at 2:27 looks closer to how she's rendered on paper), but I had my reservations for the casting in each of the Nolan Batman films too, so I'll accept it for now. Hopefully Amy Adams won't be to this what Katie Holmes was to Batman Begins.

My wife pointed out that there are some possible elements of Birthright in there ("It's not an S. On my world, it means hope."), so it's possible that it serves as the reference point they jumped off from, and if that's the case, I'm on board. Even, dare I say it, excited.

One question I did have: In this movie, it seems like Jor-El already had this whole sending-baby-to-Earth plan set up before Krypton met its end (he knows where he's sending the pod, and what the environment of Earth will do to his son's physiology), while in the comics, I think it's always been portrayed that he just put his son in the space-bassinet and sent him off in a random direction, in the hopes he'd find something. In this story, it's clear Krypton has very advanced space exploration (and presumably, colonization) capabilities, and if so, how can the destruction of a single planet end an entire civilization? And if he could see this coming, why didn't he pack up the whole family and move, rather than sending baby Kal-El alone?

I know it's too early to be engaging in this whole nerdy nit-picking exercise, but I'm very nerdy when it comes to Supes.

@3, for some one who claims to be 'very nerdy' about Supes you should know that there are lots of variations on his origins. One even had Jor-El visiting earth at one point on his own so that's how he knew it would be perfect to harbor his son. So your claim about "sending him out randomly" is completely false.

How shallow am I that my main thought after watching that was "Superman with a hairy chest!!!! {swoons}"

As for this trailer, I am impressed. Really its going to look fantastic. Hate on his films all you want, but Snyder knows how to fill a frame. So once again it is all going to come down to the script. From the looks of this, I like where it is going (other than re-treading on Zod one more damn time) but at least its not a weak Lex Luthor going for a land grab again.

Here is what I hope this film is: a great modern telling of the Superman mythos. We don't need anymore odes to the silver and golden age version of the characters. John Byrne's reboot of the character in the 80s was a great direction and actually made him viable again.

What I would ultimately love to see if WB/DC admit they faulted with Green Lantern and if they are really trying to emulate Marvel's success continue with the world building that got started in the Batman trilogy. Let those stand as they are a mostly 'real world' take on Batman. But as the Joker said in TDK, 'the Batman changed everything....' why would that be only for villains? Make Bruce's 'sacrifice' at the end of TDKR be what brings Clark out of his exile and wish to do good in the world. Keep working off of that, bring back in JGL as either a new Bats or let him be Nightwing which they pretty much did already.

Do it right. Write some amazing stories and a JL film will be amazing.

@2 I have to disagree. At some point you have to try something new, because the 1 dimensional force for unarguable good just becomes stale. That's the crux of every remake/reboot, actually- Making money isn't enough of a reason to try a remake; If you can't bring something new to the story, why remake it at all? Let Christopher Reeve be the definitive Superman and be done with it.

I'm a big fan, but I don't keep up with the comics. (The whole Infinite Earths business seems too involved for me, for instance.) So maybe I can't claim a nerd level of support in this regard, even if I feel like I am one. I do however defer to your - and Ben's - wisdom on the subject, since it was you two who convinced me to pick up a copy of Birthright, which has become my favorite comic ever, even eclipsing Hush. So if you're feeling charitable, I'm open to any other suggestions (in addition to Dark Knight Returns, as you just mentioned) you may have to brush up on my Supes-cred.

@9, my use of TDKR in my previous post was in regards to the film The Dark Knight Rises, not the Frank Miller comic The Dark Knight Returns from the 80s.

I really can't give you any suggestions if you enjoyed Hush. Never could enjoy that book myself. Looking back on it, it was just a precursor of the shit look and feel that Jim Lee is now destroying DC with (which is why I have dropped all their books from my readings)

I think that Zack Snyder is still a hack who's best movie was a diminishing-returns unnecessary remake of George Romero's masterpiece. I think this stinks of a quick paycheck for Costner, Crowe and Shannon. I think Henry Cavill is pretty hot but no Christopher Reeve. I think anyone who sees this without waiting for reviews first is an idiot.

Just read Birthright for a class - I can definitely see the influence! Not sure about Superman with a beard though.

Besides, normal human shaving is annoying as
it is. Imagine having to do it by focusing your own laser eye beams into a mirror to do so. I don't even want to consider the implications of a slip up while doing some Super-Manscaping.

@7 - If you have to do something new, then do something new. If you don't have a story to tell with the brightly-colored archetypical uncompromising moral high ground super hero, then don't tell your story with Superman. There are a billion grim'n'gritty shades-of-grey heroes you can play with.

In certain scenes looked like Bill Hader as Superman, which I'd probably see.
