That speech was outstanding and delightful. Thank you so much for posting!

It's Colombia, not Columbia. I'm in Colombia now with my Colombian bf. The Colombian Supreme Court ruled that by June 20 either the legislature must make marriage legal, or it will simply become legal. It's unclear if the senate will vote in favor. But it will become law in June about the same time that the US Supreme Court issues its rulings on Prop8 and DOMA.

A French Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois is basically threatening violence if France passes marriage equality. A reminder that many "men of god" are phonies and hypocrites. As each country passes equal marriage, the lies of groups like NOM are laid bare. Threats of violence and violence are nothing new to those the Catholic church targets. But the world keeps moving forward. Proof there are good people in the world.

Asst. Speaker: Order. Members and, uh, the gallery, can I just ask that you refrain from any comment that may <> after, after the clerk has announced the third reading [. . .]

A solid 70-80% of people in the room: FUCK THAT NOISE.

(I may have paraphrased that last one a bit)
5
Oh dear god. Sobbing first thing in the morning.
6
Crying like a baby here.
7
@3, happily, the French Catlick is just mad because the battle is so clearly already won by marriage equality there. Next Tuesday's final legislative vote in Paris is just a formality that will pass handily, and the law has the support of the vast majority of the French people.
8
SCOTUS--are you listening?
9
Where can we get some conservatives like that one? What a fantastic speech!
10
@7 The real disgrace is the new pope hasn't condemned the threats.
11
Nice to think that somewhere clear-headedness prevails and logic rules and people are human. It's too bad it's not in my country, but at least it's somewhere (perhaps over the rainbow).
12
Dayum!

That second video just has the tears pouring down my face. Not only is the sentiment beautiful, but those Kiwi bastards can sing. And, everyone stood in respect, even those not singing.

The first video was awesome. What a fantastic smackdown of the haters, detractors and even ordinary trepidations.

Also, Williamson was hilarious. I particularly liked his mispronunciation of "celibacy" during his quip about a priest complaining about an unnatural act, and then his correction of it after being prompted off-screen, followed by, "I wouldn't know, I've never done it."
14
1) Damn, that was beautiful.
2) Why is everyone else's legislature so much cooler than ours?

#3
French Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois, speaking to Hollande: "If you allow gay marriage, I'm going to yell and scream and stomp my feet and hold my breath until I turn blue! And after that, I'm going to do something really, really bad, and, boy, then you're gonna be sorry!
16
Awesome news, woohoo!
17
@10, wouldn't that be something, fitting with the pope's new "Mr. Nice Guy" imagebuilding...
18
That was so fucking beautiful. Now I have to go fix my makeup.
19
Lovely. Just lovely.
20
Nope nope nope nope. Not crying at work. I just started this job. The last thing I need is for them to think I'm an emotional basketcase.

I am MacCrocodile! Impervious to emotion and impromptu Maori love songs!
21
On vacation, are you dan? suuuure :)
23
Thats is soooo damn brilliant - also if you want to cry just a liiiiiittle bit more when hearing that song, heres the lyrics:

Kia Ora to all my NZ buddies. Kiwis are the most wonderful people in the world. Can you imagine Ameircans anywhere, let alone in the gallery of our House or Senate, busting out a Native American love song in Lakota, or Cherokee or Anishinabe? So much for the myth of American Exceptionalism. Thank you Dan, we neededed a ray of sunshine as we endure the events of this week. The whole office is passing around the Kleenex.
25
Damn, that was cool.
26
@24 - True, American culture is very... post-Columbian-centric, but I can imagine something like "Oh Shenandoah" being sung, especially if one of the plains states ever got around to doing this.

Incidentally, I've heard both Pokarekare Ana and Shenandoah sung by a men's chorus, and both are absolutely heart-melting.
27
@24 - And of course Hawaii still retains a lot of native Hawaiian culture and language. While the perhaps-best-known Hawaiian-language song, Aloha ʻOe, might not be appropriate for a celebration, there are certainly other songs that would do the job.
28
Very cool. Glad my Kiwi friends did the right thing.
29
@26/27 - Point taken. I forgot our Hawaiian brothers and sisters, and I agree if such a thing could happen with Americans, it could only be in Hawaii. I think another appropriate choice would be Somewhere Over the Rainbow on ukulele. The version by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is the best ever recorded.
30
@14 Westminster Parliamentary System.
31
That was just beautiful.
32
These are exciting times to be alive.
33
My joy overwhelms my jealously. Way to go, NZ.
34
I knew New Zealand was fucking gorgeous, but I had no idea it was so sane and sensible, as well. Sounds like a great place!
35
I actually just came online to forward that speech to you Dan, but you're on the ball as usual. Its been a very happy and historical day for this little kiwi.

Also, while I'm blowing my own horn, New Zealand was also the first country in the world to allow woman the vote, and the first to have an openly transexual mayor and member of parliament. *Proud*

Guys, it was unfortunately not just that stupid cardinal who said bull***** in France.
A former French deputy (Christine Boutin) called for civil war, and this morning one of the deputies who is supposed to vote (against) the law said that the government was "assassinating" children (no it's not a joke). There has been too many calls to violence and homophobic speeches to count.
We've had a rise of homophobic violence for 6 months, only getting worse. Not only that, but the right-wing opposition hardly condemn them- they only accuse the left to use those violences "to their advantage".
Those people don't realize their are dishonoring their country. I wish Dan could mention the mess that's going on in France so this evil could be exposed to the whole world. His support would mean a lot to the French LGBT community.

Please wait...
