The principal girls
Of the U.S.A.
Can you name, name, name
Name them today?

@1: I know that Ronnie and Mabel are on that list somewhere. Did you see them on the beach or in NYC?
3
BTW, I am on a quest to see all 50 state capitols. Bagged 12 so far. Highly recommend it. Consider, this if you are visiting say, Salt Lake City, Denver or Boston for business or family check out the Capitol buildings. All are State Capitols.

It's almost as if there is a disconnect of some kind between what big time pro sports team owners do and what pro sports fans want. Is it possible?
5
Mt St Helens blew up today, 33 years ago.
6
Nice tits Paul!
7
@5 Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division, also died on the same date.
8
@7
Love will tear us apart again.
9
The Stranger and The Seattle Times are in a pissing contest, that is far more annoying than it is interesting.
10
@3: That's fantastic. Hope you make to all by the time your 60, or 70 perhaps.
11
@3,
Cool! I've also seen 12 now that I think about it. Not sure which is my favorite... St. Paul, probably.
12
3, good luck getting into Juneau.
13
While you're at it, learn all the countries of the world too:

Joy Division has no relevance to the comparative kiddie porn of Slog
15
@7 Wow! I didn't know that! They're, like, two parallel cataclysms. Some sort of poetic analogy could be made. While Mt. St. Helens was emptying itself from the inside out half a world away, Ian Curtis, only twenty-three, was standing on a chair in the kitchen, tying a rope in preparation for killing himself.
16
@10 Thanks. I am undertaking this at a leisurely pace. So, it's quite doable by 60 y/o.

@11 So far, my favorite is Springfield, IL (Illinois is my home state). Enormous amount of history concerning Lincoln & Douglas. They restored the edifice last summer(?).

@12 Been to Juneau, tiny & remote but pleasantly surprised.
17
15, Maybe his suicide is what caused the volcano to blow?

Remote isn't the word. There's no roads leading into it. That can't be an accident
18
@16,
Yeah, the history of each state probably lends interest to the capitol.

In terms of my own personal (totally subjective) opinion of the 12 state capitols I've seen...

Top tier: Saint Paul, MN., Tallahassee, FL., Madison, WI., Austin, TX.,

Second tier: Atlanta, GA., Providence, RI., Baton Rouge, LA., Boston, MA.,

Third tier: Denver, CO., Phoenix, AZ., Richmond, VA., Des Moines, IA.

Denver's capitol building is pretty disappointing. And I live in CO., so I've seen it more than once. Virginia and Iowa.... maybe I just went there on a bad day? But I wasn't impressed. Tallahassee and Madison are small, but cool. Austin has a LOT of cool history. Saint Paul is both.

Boston and Atlanta are overwhelming. Baton Rouge and Providence are underwhelming.

But of course, it's all subjective, all personal opinion.
19
@3 and 16: Montpelier Vermont is the smallest state capital and a really nice place. I also like Helena Montana.

First, we did not see a single state capitol! Perhaps the cartoonist should have checked on the correct spelling of capital, with 2 A's and no "O". Second, the capital of SD is pronounced "peer", not "pee-air"!

Albany, NY is the most boring city in America. One the one hand, I guess that could be regarded as a good thing if you are a refugee from Mogadishu. Pleasantly boring is always better than horrifying.

Anapolis, MD is sort of like Olympia. Lovely old buildings, beautiful waterfront.

Indianapolis is rednecky in the extreme.

Little Rock is kinda seedy and violent, but the Clinton Library is awesome and well worth the visit.

Oklahoma City is nice downtown. Check out Bricktown. I didn't care for the rest of the city, since it lacks sidewalks. The monument to the bombing at the federal building is very moving and a well-made tribute to those who lost their lives there.

Olympia's just so awesome.

That's it for capitals I've visited ;)

Seven state capitals so far for my wife and I, a ongoing tour we began with our honeymoon. There's been about five we've missed simply because they were closed on the days we passed through. Our interesting note to add: New Mexico the only state capitol building that does not have a dome.
23
South Dakota has "PEER", not "pee-AIR". Then again, it's Wacko.

Please wait...
