Your dogs dead bitch. If it was on Craigslist it already been stir fried in a wok and sold as Chinese food to Seattle yuppies.
2
The story about the soldier's dog is unconscionable. I've been trying to spread the word everywhere I can.
3
I agree the dogs probably dead. Check at the Asian restaraunts if they know anything. Those japs will eat anything that moves.
4

Don't UW students get health insurance (like at most 4 year colleges) ?

5
I hope the soldier at least broke his douchey ex-friend's arms before all else.

Florida needs to fall.

The Burke Gilman trail is not the autobahn. It's supposed to be natural experience and bulging tree roots are part of the ambiance. He would have only scraped knees and elbows had he been going a reasonable speed.
The city has far more pressing issues. Sorry kid!
8
@4- the UW has student health insurance, yes but it's an additional few hundred dollars every quarter. It's not something you get just for being a student.

@7- the Burke is advertised as a commuter link to neighborhoods and cities nearby. It is not a nature trail.
9
@8

Point one: Wow. Cheapskates. I always assumed it was built in to most school's tuition (it was in mine). And under current law couldn't his parents have covered him up to age 26?

Point two: Sounds like he should sue.
10
@8: No, it is both. It is a commuter link but also a nature trail. It's for old folks in walkers, walkers, dog walkers, baby carriages, runners, skateboarders and bicyclists. It's a trail, not a road.
11
@8: Okay, it's not a 'nature' trail per se.
12
JFC it's too early in the morning for this shit. Please ban @1, @3. I will just shake my head in pity at @4, @6, @7, @9, @10.

Here's what it is.

It's the same Seattle bullshit that when they want to get your money tell you it's a "safe convenient way for cyclists to glide to work in Cascadian splendor", but when the trolley, trail or luxury condo kills, maims, falls on to the top of you, they claim that you were being "stupid".
14
I took a tumble on the trail last summer. The speeding bicyclist didn't hit me, but by being startled and getting out of the way I lost my footing and down I went. No injuries, but still. Slow down people!

@12: Then I suggest you go back to bed, sounds like you need more sleep or have a splitting hangover. Then you won't be so annoying to everyone for the rest of the day.

What a beautiful Saturday morning!

but liberals are always telling us how enlightened europeans are and how much better that nasty racist americant's.

and the lady was right. waste of food.....
19
There are some sections of the Burke that are pretty bumpy from tree roots that could trip up anyone--cyclists, joggers, walkers, skateboarders--anyone who's not expecting it. If it was a sidewalk, the property owner would be required to repair those bumps for public safety.
20
@ 18 The Stranger has mentioned before that when it comes to racial issues the US is better off than Europe and Australia.
21
@9: If I recall it is about $500 per quarter. But financial aid does some weird stuff during the summer quarter that sometimes makes it hard to pay for, if I recall correctly.

My guess is that he is one of those bat-out-of-hell cyclists who nearly knocked me over 100 times while walking the trail home from classes. You don't break both arms just falling from a bike--you need to be thrown at a pretty high speed to do that. And it is not as if this is the only bump in the trail. It is a trail, not a road, and even pedestrians need to watch their footing at places (despite it being paved). And suing the parks dept. for this would just limit their budget when it probably wasn't even their fault at all. What next? Will they need lighting along the entire trail for nighttime cyclists? Traffic lines, etc.? He needs to do a fundraiser or something. It sucks to be him, but I'm guessing it was still 99% his fault.
22
I usually disagree with everything that Raindrop says or stands for, but ...when you're right, you're right!

(Note: that is not a political reference but one of agreement.)
23
@20: We are. Talk to some Europeans on this sometime and your eyes will be opened. Europeans generally understand explicit racism. They don't get it when it isn't out in the open (talk to them about employment, stereotyping, historical disadvantages, etc.). And since Europe, in general, is far less racially diverse than the US (95% of Europe is white), most Europeans have never had to feel the consequences. They also have some laws that censor people from saying racist shit. This allows Americans to know who many of the racists are while in Europe they tend to be under the surface. So yeah, Europeans are not in a place to criticize the US on race relations. Canada can, but not Europe.

"Do I Get to Keep the Pot? Start saving your pennies and dime bags. Seattle City Council is considering a law that would make smoking pot in public a ticketable offense. If the law is passed, officers would still give a verbal warning before writing the $103 ticket."
Two things:
1: smoking in many public places is already against the law, and those laws should include canibus.
2: medical canibus patients should be exempt from getting a ticket, as long as they have documentation and are not smoking in the same space as is illegal for tobacco.
28
@21

You might be surprised at the kinds of injuries that can occur in low-speed bike accidents. You can crack your skull falling over while stopped at a stoplight.

I am probably one of those bat-out-of-hell cyclists you mention, and my opinion is that the guy who broke his arms was just another putz on a shitty mountain bike, listening to his iPhone and not really paying attention to much. . He hit a bump he wasn't expecting and his meager bike handling skills caused him to lose control and eat shit. Since he probably doesn't know how to dump a bike correctly, he likely fell in an awkward, incorrect way increasing his injuries. Truly skilled cyclists are probably aware of the apocalyptic nature of the trail in the UW and ride accordingly.

The death toll in the latest mass slaughter of pro-democracy protesters in Egypt is now over 120.

When anti-islamic protesters filled Tahrir Square in the lead-up to the coup, SLOG was breathlessly reporting every tear gas cannister.

But now that pro-democracy protesters are being fired upon with live ammunition, and slaughtered by the dozen, all it merits is a mention in the morning news round-up.

It seems The Stranger holds the same view as the American right-wing press: if a violent crackdown is only disenfranchising mere Muslims, then it's unfortunate, but not really worth the trouble of spilling any extra ink.

Or at least not when there's a new supermarket planned in West Seattle, or a bar somewhere in America still serving Stoli— now that's the sort of thing that merits daily SLOG posts and extra effort and lots of political analysis.

#23 - Europe may have been "95% white" a few decades ago, but they, like us, are slowly but surely turning brown. Unfettered immigration from Africa and the Middle East, combined with low white birth rates and a crippling sense of white guilt, are conspiring to make the whole world shit-colored. No offense.
31
@30: No, they are 95% white right now. Look at the data. They make a big deal about immigration in Europe, but their rate of immigration is still even lower than ours (and when you look at their numbers, much of the numbers are padded by intra-Europe migration). Europe is still really, really white. Let's put it this way, Montana is more racially diverse than most of Europe.
32
@30 ("...conspiring to make the whole world shit-colored. No offense.")

You suck. Maximum offense intended.
33
Uw student health insurance is $1500 a quarter. Too much for me to afford on top of tuition. The bumps on the Burke are big no matter how fast you're going.
34
@33: Here's the link:
http://www.washington.edu/ship/

It has gone up a little since I went there, but unless you have a child or a spouse, it costs about $700 per quarter.
35
"Shit-colored" is a bit ironic considering that multi-racial people are generally speaking exceptionally good-looking. Certainly more attractive than racist dogfucker kiddiefiddlers like catsnbanjos.
36
The BKT has some pretty bad bumps for a paved urban trail, but the worst of them seem to be fairly well marked/outlined with paint.

I suspect that inattention rather than speed was the cause of this accident. A skilled rider can safely ride a bike quite fast - far faster than the un-posted limit of 15mph on trails in King County - provided they're paying attention (and another inattentive person doesn't get in the way, which is all too common on the BKT).
37
Yep, It's actually about $750 a quarter. I was pricing things to include my spouse. Whoops. It's still much more than it should be.
38
@36: Skilled rider, did you say? Whose to say that this young lad isn't a more skilled rider than you are? What was the lighting? Where were the shadows? At 20 feet and closing? Were there curves? The incline? Isn't it an axiom for cyclists that it's not a matter of if, but when?
No cyclist is immune from the awful combination of speed and murphy's law, no matter the skill he or she has.
But yes, indeed those inattentive people do get in the way, like little old ladies (sorry Phoebe), families with toddlers -- so annoying.
39
@38: Don't quote Murphy's Law. Please God don't. It only applies to engineers. And it doesn't mean "what can go wrong, will go wrong". It means "if there are two ways to do something and one way will end in catastrophe, then inevitably that way will be selected". Murphy's Law is in reference to over a dozen accelerometers being installed backwards during rocket sled tests.
40
@38 - What's to say that young lad isn't a more skilled rider than I am?

Simple - his two broken arms!

If shadows, curves, sight-lines, and inclines were so hazardous on the BKT, then the hundreds - if not thousands - of other people who use the BKT on a daily basis wouldn't do so without incident.
41
I tested a bike from Recycled Cyles by taking it on the Burke Gilman trail. I decided against buying it. The bike was great, but the bicyclists scared the living shit out of me.
42
@40
What's to say that young lad isn't a more skilled rider than I am?

Simple - his two broken arms!

Given your cocky attitude, it's just a matter of time.
43
@42 - it's just a matter of time for anyone who rides, regardless of attitude.

I've been racing bikes most of my adult life and don't know anyone who hasn't been injured on a bike - some from high-speed crashes while racing, some from falling over at a stop-light when they had a 'brain fart' and couldn't/didn't unclip from their pedals.

Mine came when a car ran a stop sign - if anyone's attitude was to blame it was the driver who either ignored my approach (from a direction without a stop) or 'didn't see me' in spite of my flashing headlamp and brightly colored jersey.

Am I cocky to think my next injury won't be two broken arms as a result of hitting a bump on the BKT that thousands of other riders avoid every day? Maybe - but it wouldn't be the first time I've been called a cocky SOB, so what the hell.
44
The Burke Gilman trail has a few bumps, but honestly it's about as safe as a bicycling experience can get.
45
What's the ticket for public drinking?

Please wait...
