I am not a Greenpeace fan but this is one of the most clever things they've ever done. The second sign, that was the kicker. I can't believe I'm typing this, but: Well done, Greenpeace.
That is HILARIOUS. I am an avid Formula 1 geek and I have to say that I never saw that. The TV coverage never showed that. I wondered why Seb Vettel was looking down, but I presumed he was looking at the crowd. Until this footage I never knew. I loathe Shell (as well as Exxon, BP), but until now I didn't know this happened. Thanks Dan. I doubt most of the world saw this though. There was a MCO (maximum close up) on Seb during the national anthems.
As @13 says, the TV crew would have no reason to show this, so it would have been seen only by the "studio audience" at Spa-Francorchamps. Here's an eye-witness YouTube video stating it didn't go out on TV.
So, unfortunately, the impact is essentially limited to secondary media coverage, like this post, not the live TV audience.
Also, that is in no way the "Grand Prix finals." It's just the awards ceremony for that day's race at Spa. The finals, if that term is ever appropriate, is at the last race of the season in November in Brazil. I'ma gonna have to call "dingbat" on that writer.
Probably could have waited for 2nd sign but then again maybe they suspected that the man would notice the gizmo for the 2nd sign before they could raise it.
I'm always iffy with Greenpeace, they seem to fall prey to pseudo-science quite a bit, but this was golden.
This is so much more effective, awesome, and un-shitty than ELF and their terrorism.
