...your are a low-income women...
Clever, emulating the literacy level of the average teahadist.

SeattleBlue is furiously masterbating to that screen grab right now.

How about this joyful item:
Among those workers were some at the National Institute of Healthโ€™s famed hospital of last resort, where officials said no new patients would be admitted for the duration of the shutdown. Dr. Francis Collins, agency director, estimated that each week the shutdown lasts will force the facility to turn away about 200 patients, 30 of them children, who want to enroll in studies of experimental treatments.

@3; with a "u", not an "e".
I know that...

Thank fucking Christ Barry has his priorities straight and kept pretty much the whole fucking DEA on the job though - what if people used this window of opportunity to smoke demon weed or alter their states of mind!

why won't Obama negotiate? give them half of the ACA now, and the rest in 3 weeks for the debt ceiling? all they want is save freedom. WHAT A MUSLIN!
7
Shouldn't baby mamas be applying for help from their baby daddies, or is that impolitic to suggest?
8
@7 -- What if the baby daddy is dead, or in jail, or unemployed, or somewhere far, far away and the baby mama can't find him? Let the kid starve I guess, while we chase him down (or dig him up).
9
I was shocked to see some people on Facebook who think that this is all Obama's fault. Really. These were not teabaggy people either, but normal people who didn't get that we're all being held hostage by the Teahadists.
10
This is exactly what conservatives want. After all, in their beliefs, those people CHOSE to be poor, and also CHOSE to be unemployed. Therefore, they should suffer and die as punishment for all their bad choices.

The only way conservatives believe the poor should not suffer and die is if they come groveling to the conservative's "charities" (usually religious), beg for forgiveness, and pledge fealty.

Conservatives want a return to the past alright... they want to return to Medieval times.

How come when I go on vacation my website stays up and running?

12
That's a power question, @11. Similar to asking what happens when a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it.
13
@ 10, if only. Serfs had to be cared for.

The WA DoH Page says the following:

Federal Government Shutdown

October 1, 2013

Due to the federal government shutdown the Washington State Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) has funds for about nine (9) days of operations. We do not anticipate closure of WIC clinics or retail stores refusing WIC checks during the nine days of operational funding. We will continue to provide updates if the government shutdown continues."

http://www.doh.wa.gov/YouandYourFamily/W…

I am not sure what they mean by, "We do not anticipate closure of WIC clinics or retail stores refusing WIC checks during the nine days of operational funding." Does that mean that, after 9 days, no checks will be accepted? And presumably, they aren't issuing any new checks. I guess babies will have to go with sugar water instead of formula for a while. Ah well, we all have to do our part to help protect America.

It is difficult to put in words how much I hate the House Republicans. AND how frustrating it is that more than a few media sources are trying to be neutral and describe this as a failure of "both sides" to negotiate.

I'm actually surprised when a commentator or writer takes the Republicans to task about using governance issues to manufacture crisis.
16
@11 Captioned pictures of Kent are not the same as a website that needs to provide services backed by people.
17
@14 don't you get it? In Republican land abortion is murder, starving babies is good government policy.
18
@17...

...spot on, man.

The asshole seattleblues is on notice sanctioning murder of living, birthed children.

The unborn? Well they HAVE to be protected you know.
19
@11: Because no one comes to your website, and no one cares about it. Therefore, no maintenence or defense from hackers is needed. Genius.
20
The Tea Nazi's have caused more destruction and more death in this country than the attacks of 9-11 did. Why aren't they treated like the terrorists that they are?

I'm confused about people worrying what the babies will eat. The government shutdown doesn't affect a woman's lactation, unless she's starving.

As to working moms, there's pumping, hand-expressing if you can't afford a pump, and making friends with other mamas so you can share wet-nursing duties.

Seriously, formula industry, the kids will wind up hooked on HFCS and starch additives even if we don't start them at birth. At LEAST give 'em a chance to eat real fucking food for a few months.
22
@21, dear stupid judgemental moron: you can't breast-feed your children until they're 18. Presumably all of your children committed suicide or ran away as soon as they could toddle, and reasonably so; but not most moms. WIC is not a program for just breast-feeders or for formula, for that matter.

Many working mothers can't express at work; it's forbidden, there's no time, and there's no place for it. Stop trying to shame mothers who are different than you.
23
@21, to follow up on Fnarf said, WIC highly encourages exclusive breastfeeding. For mothers who are exclusively breastfeeding, they provide extra food for the mother - fruit, vegetables (including organic), high protein foods like cheese, milk and peanut butter, to ensure that they continue to be healthy and to product sufficient healthy milk.

That said, because WIC is in the reality business rather than the business of moral judgement, they realize that some mothers cannot breastfeed for various reasons - some babies don't latch, some woman have a shortage of supply, or nipple issues. Others have twins or triplets, in which case supply is going to be a challenge. And you cannot just find "wet-nurse" friends on craigslist. So, for mothers who cannot breastfeed, they provide formula, which is the next best think and costs $20+ for a carton. The alternative for parents who can't afford it is going to sugar water or cow's milk, neither of which have the nutrients babies need for good brain development.

Your comment shows a total lack of exposure to the real world situation of parents, and doesn't do anything to promote the practice of breastfeeding. WIC is funded through the USDA which means they are influenced by American emphasis on milk, cheese, and bread, but they've made a lot of strides in allowing fresh fruit and veg. supplements and for a lot of families make the difference between hunger/poor nutrition and health.

Please wait...
