Love the PK link...indeed, we can't have any pesky, obvious demonstration proofs laying around that might just clue people into the bluster, puff and spin which is behind austerianism. It would be like social medicine that actually works too...
2
Paul Krugman's article is infuriating. Deregulation has caused destruction of working families in favor of the uber wealthy. That France should suffer because it has resisted that makes me hope they stick to their guns and show Europe where they went wrong for the next big failure of deregulation.
3
I like your style with the morning news, Jen.
4
Actually, limits on ammunition and gay marriage are dealbreakers for lots of folks.

stay tuned...
5
Re: Colorado, looks like they've got a strategy to gerrymander the senate after all.
6
Let Washington County secede, then turn them into a parking lot. Problem solved.
7
@4: So leave. There are many countries in this world where there are no limits on ammunition and no gay marriage. Oh, and I hear Somalia is nice this time of year anyway.

Don't forget to let the door hit you on your way out! Love, Civilization
8
If they secede, they're going to be begging for readmission within a year, or at least annexation by Kansas (who won't want another hungry mouth of a county to feed).
9
This sentence in the secession article blew my mind:

"Republicans next year are planning to propose making state Senate seats be apportioned by land mass instead of population to grant a bigger voice to the sparsely populated areas."

The anti-democratic bent of the Republican Party continues to astound me.
10
@9 actually, the landmass idea was a fallback from their original plan, which was to give tumbleweed the vote.
11
Kit, cygnet, infant, joey. Do I win the internet?
13
Thousands upon thousands dead, towns just wiped from the map, and "There's looting" is in any way notable?

Oh, that's right, they're brown. Gotta have that "looting" narrative. Thanks.
14
I second @3. The Grantland article was great. This is a society discussing a changing attitude on what is to be a man. Brawny manufacturing jobs are disappearing (have disappeared), and old attitudes on might makes right are going to change. At the same time, the most violent sport is dominating the culture, and the choice is to spend $50m on high school football stadiums, rather than computers, in Texas. That may just be pandering to voters and kickbacks from contractors to politicians.

Football mimics war. Man love war. Women and children pay for man's love of war.

@12 You can have one. Hatching eggs are cheap. But turkeys get big really fast...

I hatched some bobwhite to keep as pets about 15 years ago. Turns out the females make pretty good pets. Males, not so much. SERIOUS testosterone poisoning. Not too surprising when you learn that during breeding season their (internal) testes grow to the relative size of our livers.
17
@9: I'd love to see a parallel analysis of Senate seats apportioned by tax contributions to the state treasury.

a society that murders a million babies a year is not 'civilized'.

dumbass
19
@18: A god that murders far more is good though, right?
20
@18: People like you are ruining Colorado.
Pissed off about ammunition limits? If you can't kill a coyote with 15 rounds, you shouldn't have a gun. And we all know you don't really give a damn about babies, just your guns and teh gays.

p.s. a bunch of us had a great laugh the other day when we saw a bumper sticker, "Pro God, Pro Life, Pro guns. That pretty much sums up idiots like you, doesn't it?

Just a quick note on the artist nailing his privates to the cobblestones in Russia.

1. To the cobblestones? Ouch. Not an easy layer to penetrate with a hammer and nail.

2. Without reading the article, I would assume he nailed his scrotum. Nailing your testicle(s) would cause irreversible damage, insane amounts of pain, and the likelihood of serious infection. You can pierce your scrotum with far fewer potential problems, plus it's far easier than trying to run a nail -however sharp- through a round, slippery thing inside a skin sac.

@18 - How about a society that bombs people by robot airplanes, extrajudicially? How do we rank on that scale you have?
24
I disagree; there are dozens of ways in which white men "can air-guitar the berserk discourse of a warrior race." Starting with threatening a bunch of moms in a Texas parking lot with an arsenal of guns and rifles.
26
19

you should definitely call the cops.

who did god off?
27
21

is civilization impregnating a million women a year?

is there a video?

we'd like to see that.....

you won't find any defense of Obama's War Crimes Against Humanity from us

the bunch of you are a great laugh.

The Assumption That All Veterans Have PTSD Isn't Helping Them

I remember a skit on Almost Live that addressed this phenomenon head-on, where Pat Cashman played "Wally, the Well-Adjusted Vietnam Vet." It was pretty actually pretty funny, with Wally's friends expecting him to freak out every time a helicopter passed overhead or a car backfired, but Wally remaining totally situation-appropriate, upbeat, and normal. Too bad I can't find a link to it...

Well, I see that two incompletely edited draft versions somehow got posted, but not the edited final version. Damn you, NSA!

Please wait...
