@1 - I don't see anything suggesting he knew her before the documentary...maybe I'm missing something?

@2 Well, those two direct quotes from the article "suggest" exactly that.

He says he met her after seeing Grey Gardens. He says he met her in 1976 and the article says the movie came out in 1975. What's the problem?

1976 was, y'know, after 1975, at least chronologically.
