Well at least it looks like they've largely gotten away from the teen soap opera dreck that sank the show in the first place.

Paul, if you do watch the series, I advise only watching season 1. It's easier, and it won't break your heart when you see what they do to season 2 and beyond. Some people will argue that season 2 is watchable, but I can only advise that you watch everything but the finale, if anything.

Oh man. If I'm counting right, I have 70 days to re-watch the series. Attainable new year's resolution? Check.
3
I never saw the show either, but adore that actress, whose name I fear escapes me. Kristen Bell? Her "Party Down" work, woof.

I think it's probably because of the third season that I don't have much interest in the movie, which is probably going to be at the same level of quality as the L. A. Law television movies. Actually, probably at a lower level, since they won't have Evil Harry Hamlin, who was in the first two seasons of Veronica Mars.

I've never seen Veronica Mars—shocking, I know
same here. so what's the hook? is she from the fourth planet or an ancient archie comic, or what? (supernatural or superhero status is de-rigueur, of course)

@5 Nope no superpowers, just a girl who is allowed to be smart, bitter and funny.
7
Kyle and Uda... I miss Party Down.

I got into Firefly after seeing Serenity. I was like wow, what a great series.

I actually contributed to the Veronica Mars kickstarter. I got into the series on DVD thanks to my boyfriend (also Friday Night Lights.) VM Seasons 1 and 2 are good, Season 3 tried to be less serial (due to network direction). Season 1 had a little too much pointing out the obvious voice over. It bothered me through the first 5 episodes. What really got me into the series was that Veronica was smart, but her Dad was better. She came up with smart answers and sometimes she was right and sometimes she was wrong. And when she was wrong things could be very dangerous. By the way, Enrico Colantoni does a great job as a humble down not out detective/former chief of police/dad.

Anyway, I hope the movie does at least for Veronica Mars was Serenity did for Firefly, open the doors for more people to enjoy the show.

I'm in the same boat re: watching Serenity before Firefly (the premise didn't grab me when the show was on; I was wrong, wrong, wrong!).

S3 of VM was kind of a drag, but the mini promo for a S4? Set a few years later? Was brill. I am hoping the film will be in the same vein, and will be there on Day 1.

This movie has nothing whatsoever to do with the series, which, while it was set in a P.I./teen soap opera thing, was actually about the relationship between Veronica and her father, a relationship more realistic, human and engaging than most any other depicted on TV or in movies. I like Kristen Bell as an actress, but I'm pretty sure I won't see this movie unless I'm really bored, and I can get it out of a vending machine for $1.30.

According to more than one source, had the series not been canceled when the UPN and WB TV networks merged, Veronica would have become a cadet at the FBI Academy, but still solving mysteries in her spare time. That would've been interesting.

@3, if you like Ms. Bell, I highly recommend her work in House of Lies and her best peformance as Mary Lane in 'Reefer Madness the Movie Musical'

@11 thank you! Despite the queer son side story I've had a hard time caring about the House of Lies setting, despite Ms. Bell and the rest of the wonderful cast. Will give it another shot, and "Reefer" too.

I couldn't stand House of Lies. Their corporate fixers are edgy because every analogy is sexual. Terrible.

I'm a big fan of Veronica Mars season one. It's a beautifully written 22 hour neo-noir film. It's so rare for a network tv season to have a beginning, middle, and end. And even rarer for the ending to be a satisfying payoff.

The execution nearly lives up to the top-notch writing. Kristen Bell plays the protagonist perfectly. Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, and Amanda Seyfried are great. I was only bothered by Teddy Dunn's barely-passable acting and the biker gang that fails miserably at being convincingly dangerous.

Seasons two and three aren't worth watching. There was tinkering to try to improve ratings that, unfortunately, took it from an A-grade show to a B-grade show.

I contributed to the kickstarter out of residual love for season one, but I don't expect the movie to wow me.

Paul, if the movie gives away the season one ending, then unfortunately it will diminish your experience of the tv episodes. Veronica Mars is great because of season one, and season one is great in large part because of the pitch-perfect way the mystery is revealed over the course of the season. In that respect it differs from Firefly/Serenity.

Please wait...
