Jen,
August Sander is one of my favorite early 20th century German photographers. Had a poster of an exhibiton of his in my office featuring this photograph:
He had some good work. I also like Dix's work. I've only seen his paintings. Much of it was anti-war (he was a WWI vet) featuring some graphic imagery. Alas, he embraced National Socialism as I recall. At least one piece has a swastika. Still, he has some reflective art.
I like August Sanders portraits as well. People didn't know how to put on camera face yet, and many of the people he photographed, like the bricklayer, had never had their picture taken (and probably not again after). They strike me as more genuine expressions than what we see in portraiture today.

Alas, having a devil of a time accessing the photo, The Bricklayer:

Hope this works.
I say bad husband.
Maybe he loves her so intensely and is trying to express that with unwavering adoration.
You just don't know. You can't know. Stop making up bullshit.
When you’re right, you’re right!
Glad we finally found some common ground.
;-)
