Jen,
August Sander is one of my favorite early 20th century German photographers. Had a poster of an exhibiton of his in my office featuring this photograph:

He had some good work. I also like Dix's work. I've only seen his paintings. Much of it was anti-war (he was a WWI vet) featuring some graphic imagery. Alas, he embraced National Socialism as I recall. At least one piece has a swastika. Still, he has some reflective art.

Jen,
Alas, having a devil of a time accessing the photo, The Bricklayer:

Hope this works.

possessing her? like in the exorcist?

It appears to me he is checking out the young intern who is stage left (or is that stage right?)

I say bad husband.

Classic projection. You are projecting your own insecurities on a photograph of people who you know next to nothing about.

Maybe he loves her so intensely and is trying to express that with unwavering adoration.

You just don't know. You can't know. Stop making up bullshit.

I like August Sanders portraits as well. People didn't know how to put on camera face yet, and many of the people he photographed, like the bricklayer, had never had their picture taken (and probably not again after). They strike me as more genuine expressions than what we see in portraiture today.

She needs better hair product.

beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

I'm with @7. I think he's thinking "that hair is killing me, fix it or I will fix it for you while you're sleeping, with an axe".

@9
When you’re right, you’re right!
Glad we finally found some common ground.

It doesn't look like he's looking AT her, but PAST her.

Please wait...
