@1 Well, compared to our offices at The Stranger, everything is swanky. But I actually remember KIRO's offices as fairly run down. Maybe they used the money they would've paid me to recarpet or something?
How nice that he starts off with a semi-compliment to teachers, given that his good buddy Arne - dipshit secretary of education - recently insulted all American teachers.
I like that this speech had a conceptual preamble. It's a weird choice for a State of the Union, but I think it works. Hopefully, it'll feed down to more solid proposals.
So if innovation is so great, why the push for standardization in schools? Standardized teaching, standardized testing, standardized curriculum= standardized students.
Obama's education policies are a continuation of Bush's policies, and they are terrible. Reforming schools - try deforming schools.
Early childhood education is good, but there should not be a "race to the top" in ECE. It's not a fucking competition as to whose kid can read letters first. Kids develop differently, and at different times.
Obama killed it on the minimum wage discussion, and the Herman Cain-like 10.10 number. There's no way $15 minimum wage will work through all of America, but I think this "Give America a raise" thing could turn into something.
@59: "Waaaaaah, how dare he even mention guns? I know he didn't mention any specific plans or legislation, but it makes us uncomfortable! Waaaaaaaaaah!"
Team USA? You mean the team you sent to be represented by the Gayest Delegation of All Time?
Also, all this talk about development in Africa is making me think you might really have been born in Kenya!! Way to bring home the pork, POTUS!!
Mental health care for Veterans? How about unlocking the research MAPS is doing into MDMA and cannabis therapy for PTSD? Ok, enough acronyms for now...
That speech obviously built to a tremendous climax, and it was smart to close on such a bipartisan note. On the positive side, I'm happy about the raising the minimum wage bit and the way Obama framed issues like immigration and gun control. On the negative side, the drones/espionage parts were too short and kind of embarrassingly sparse.
Truth, @73. I only watched one of Bush's speeches and it was so damn painful and embarrassing that I never watched another. Whether I agree with Obama or not, I can at least listen to him speak and not cringe painfully over each mispronunciation and the poor enunciation.
Here comes the Republican response: [throat clears] makers, takers, vagina penis good, penis penis bad, that's not actually your vagina, takers, maker, three corner hat, boot straps, the n-word without saying the n-word, here's a gun for your (my) vagina, takers, pipelines, bibles, those darn sand-n-words, real America, something shiny, that's not blow, we're the government, fuck the governmwnt, god bless America, land that I hate.
Years ago Bobby Jindal was made fun of for sounding like Kenneth Parcell in Jindal's response speech. This woman also sounds like Kenneth Parcell (the enthusiasm, not the accent).
@69, I chuckled at that too. Last fall I was in Germany and Austria and every local I talked to thought we were nuts over here - too many guns, no govt healthcare and favoring corporations over people (plus the federal shutdown was going on, so that was weird trying to explain in broken German).
I certainly didn't feel like Europe was "following our lead."
"Income inequality doesn't matter, it's OPPORTUNITY INEQUALITY! Ignore the fact that the bad things I talk about all would be alleviated with higher wages. Also we have plans. Just don't ask to see them. Oh, and we trust people, except when choosing who to have sex with, or with self-determination of who they are. Then the government gets to tell you."
Thank you for finally saying out loud what climatologists have been saying for decades, Mr. President. Hopefully people will listen to you and not spend two media cycles frothing over how you're some eco-terrorist or something ridiculous like that.
I liked the lady who gave the official Republican response. She opened by saying that Republicans had a bunch of better proposals to fix what Obama messed up...and then told a nice story about her life. The whole time I was thinking, "okay, were you going to mention any of those policies?"
Cathy McMorris Rodgers - As enjoyable to watch as a blind toad on a minefield. She's another right-wing moron, trying to elbow her way up in the ranks. She has been posing behind Boehner in every poto opp she can sneak her fat ass into.
She represents the fringe element of the GOP and, sadly, is attached to our state. She's trying to climb the ladder so be prepared to see her smug mug even more in coming months. Stay tuned.
a bland speech, typical democratic pastische of some good things and some corporatist things, thank you to occupy and sawant and true lefties for pushing income inequality to the fore, and too bad Obama only wants a minimal hike in the minimum wage, but still, he's for one, so it's a tiny step forward.
a far far better speech would have had less resemblance to a hodgepodge list of policy proposals and more resemblance to an explanation as to WHY we are seeing the middle and working class decline, a story in plain terms, like a fdr fireside chat, assigning moral blame to the bad actors who're causing it. like the recent seattle times article, he just seems to think "it just happened" when in fact it's the direct result of republican policies pushed by them and largely acquiesced in by the democrats over the last thirty years. until he directly says "the market won't get you livable wages, it doesn't work" and "they cut your min wage 30% since 1968 -- deliberately -- just like they did dereg which caused the financial meltdown, and they busted unions and took apart the new deal" -- it won't be a great speech. how is it that he can't bring himself to explain WHY we have greater income inequality? they act like it's a spell ofbad weather or it's globalization or other anonymous forces. it's not. it's due to politics and policies emanating from the gop and also, from the dems. this speech has zero moral resonance, and fosters zero water cooler chat and what we need is a good old fdr type speech that builds enmity of his enemies which he can welcome because THAT is what makes a speech good:
villains. enemies of the people. and us, as heros, together. income inequality isn't an accident of nature and he oughta stop acting like it is.
super duper long thread, but i've said it (upwards of a thousand times) and i'll say it again. obama is a (character played by Samuel L. Jackson in Django Unchained) and will do nothing, having said everything. i mean seriously fuck that guy. he's useless and a murderer.
Yay liberal policies!
Obama is so fucking progressive.
Spoilers?
if you squint the black man is sitting in the back row.
Boehnerface: "No chance."

Read along!
CBS is showing this in a shot wide enough to see his royal orange mug
you'll be given cushy jobs!

Did the President announce our troops are home and there is a $15/hour minimum wage?
...
Why not?
@ 77 God you are no better than the ring wingers, Wall street hates him.
God gives gifts like Down Syndrome. This is why I say "hasa diga eebowai".
I certainly didn't feel like Europe was "following our lead."
And somebody needs to investigate "Betty in Spokane"

Everything that guy just said was bullshit.

Thank you.
