At grade light rail is not equal to a properly grade-separated subway.

Although I hear it's not all that easy to construct underground (and necessary underwater) tunnels around these parts.

Seattle's subway is mediocre. Med-i-o-cre.

Oh, that our transportation situation could be summed up by a picture of a Prius on a traffic-free boulevard racing Light Rail...

It's quotes like these that make me so glad that professional football players are contractually obligated to speak to the media.

"what do you think about white people with dreadlocks? you must see a lot of that in Seattle."

Good God Chuck.
Enough with the blue filter already.

@2: well played.

Richard Sherman is pro-grade-separated mass transit? Yet another reason to love the guy.

MSNBC's Chris Hayes had a fascinating extended interview with Sherman the other day. Worth checking out.

Digression. This is not to say I didn't cringe at Sherman's post-game interview with Erin Andrews. I know from personal experience competing in relatively safe, gentlemanly sports that being "crazed" is a prerequisite for playing well. (Sometimes "crazed" translates into "in the zone;" sometimes it translates into angry.) So I was cringing at the thought that, "Hey, that reminds me of myself." I manage to turn it off at the end of the contest, especially if the end involves a victory. He let it carry over.

@1
Small-bore tunnels, like ones just big enough for a light rail car, are at this point cheap, easy, and safe to build.

Big-bore tunnels, like ones big enough for a stacked 4 lane freeway with full shoulders and runoff space, are still pretty iffy.

Is your camera-phone on it's last legs? All your photos seem to be blue now. It was moody at first, but it's starting to look like a hardware malfunction.

Charles, perhaps you have missed the light-rail tunnel that is being drilled under Capitol Hill? We are actually spending a fucking fortune on grade-separated transit. Is there any other American city that dedicates 1.8 percent of the value of every retail sale to transit? Quit whining. And by the way, it's hard to build mass transit when so many whiners insist on living in single-family homes.

@9,
well, an 8 ft shoulder and a 2 ft shoulder in each direction. The real full size shoulders were a feature of the cut and cover tunnel design.

FWIW, if a 8.5' wide metro bus broke down in the tunnel it would stick out several feet into the traffic lane by the time there was enough room for anyone to get out the door.

Please wait...
