So now the vase is worth twice as much?
2
Romney uses one of these to store his K-cups. Cuz he's rich.
3
Whilst his critical point of view is unassailable, it's never a nice thing to do to ruin someone else's artwork, no matter how overblown its value.
4
Exactly how many years in jail is a million worth?
5
This man should never have his name uttered in public again. Like assassin's, vandals gain power through the media. The article should be changed to read an "artist" who shall not be named destroyed the work of...
6
What a child. A representative for Ai Weiwei should be able to slap him across the face.
7
@4: It depends on the crime. If it's drugs, or normal theft, forever. If it's a white collar crime, no time.
8
It is shameful that society should value a vase at that amount when the real value of a K-cup is still in question. The vandal did society a favor in reminding us about not only overpriced vases, but also our priorities (convenient single serving coffee). Also: The vases are ugly.
9
You've left out at least half the story. Yes, this vandal is a dick. But the rest of the exhibit is evidence that Ai Weiwei can be a vandal and a dick, too: the vases are valuable because they're a thousand years old, and Ai Weiwei dipped them in industrial paint. Also, he smashed another antique vase, and photographs of that destructive act were positioned behind the vandalized vases on display.

Basically, it's assholes all the way down in this one.
10
I wonder if he'll be as famous as the guy who defaced the Guernica.
11
the art world that produces a brand new million dollar vase is pretty fucked.
12
@#11 it wasn't brand-new, it was an almost-two-thousand-year-old vase defaced by Weiwei.
13
I heard once that Weiwei used proceeds from these exorbitant artworks to enable his girlfriend to get breast augmentation surgery.
She went for the deluxe package which yields a K-cup.
15
Loud, political and derivative - Ai Weiwei will duct tape it back together and love it. The vase will be priceless...until auction.

The only regret - Banksy hasn't tagged it...yet.

#9 Warren, you have really missed the point of Weiwei. He is the most famous Chinese artist because he keeps thumbing his nose at the government. If anyone is telling half the story it's you.
17
@#16
What does that even mean? Ai Weiwei destroyed and/or defaced a dozen vases considerably older than the language I'm writing this comment in, all in the service of some incomprehensible artistic statement that seemingly amounts to little more than "look at how awesomely cool I am".

His relationship with the Chinese government is completely irrelevant to his act of senseless vandalism. Does he thumb his nose at the Chinese government? Good for him if he does, though as he seems to live quite a comfortable life in China he obviously hasn't pricked the authorities all that deeply.

Nicely Done! ... The toffee-nosed ignorant rich idiots of the art world, who value such pieces of cr@p over the lives of the impoverished in the world, who fail to see that they are materialistic slaves, looking down on but not at those who would live long healthy lives but for the wealth of the world being in the hands of so few, THOSE pathetic self-obsessed artists and their white sheep followers should take a good long look at themselves and stop mourning the loss of a depraved piece of sh!t artwork, which may once have been important to culture and history, but which was ruined by wei weiward.

I love this more than I have words for. Artists the world over should be going into modern art galleries and smashing until there's nothing but rubble. The "art" world of multi million dollar "con"ceptual art works is rotten, time to throw it out. There are artists doing work of actual quality (and yes, art does have an objective component that allows for "quality" to be talked about, despite what the terminally insecure out there might tell you) that deserve a chance. Art is for everyone, not only the über rich, and art is not shit-in-a-box. These paint dipped vases are shit-in-a-box. Smash them all.
21
Art valuations are hilarious.

@20,

You know what real artists did when they couldn't get into the established galleries or salons or museums or what-have-you? They created their own.

Please wait...
