How could you NOT know?! It is, HAS BEEN, right in your backyard!
2
The factoid that surprised me is that Rainer Beach only has an enrollment of 400, with capacity for 1200. I'm surprised the school district keeps it open.

Slog doesn't know what's going in the RV? What's surprise.
4
Yes, I knew this.

That's because all the white liberals moving to the south end refuse to send their kids there. People like goldy who sends his daughter to Mercer Island.

Nice article, and this city is so rich with basketball talent that Rainier Beach doesn't even have the most alums playing in the NBA right now. Rainier Beach has Nate Robinson and Jamal Crawford. Franklin has Jason Terry, Aaron Brooks, and Peyton Siva.
7
Maybe that's why David Stern hates Seattle?
8
Lots of good coaching and rainy indoor weather.too bad we can't just start our own nba franchise!
9
Tony Wroten who went to Garfield is another current NBA player from Seattle.
10
And yet the Huskies suck.

The next NBA player from RBHS will be Shaqquan Aaron, who is going to Louisville for college next year. Shaqquan is not a Seattle native. He came up from CA just to play at RBHS.

Also keep an eye out for Vikings David Crisp (Tacoma native), who committed to play at UW, and Dejounte Murray, who is currently undecided. Hopefully he stays in Seattle to play for UW as well.

Anrio Adams used to draw Dwayne Wade comparisons. But it didn't work out for him at Kansas and he transferred twice in one year, which is never good.

Garfield and Franklin in Seattle, and also Bellarmine Prep and Curtis in Tacoma all have guys in the NBA. Basketball is without question Seattle/ Tacoma's sport. All the other ones suck balls/ are played outdoors in the semi-permanent wetness.

@6 Don't forget Terrence Williams. He's the D-League right now, but so is Peyton Siva. It's a 2.5-2.5 tie at the moment.
13
@11 addendum Seattle Prep has 2 guys as well.
14
In defense of Portland, they sent Terrell Brandon to the NBA, AND he operates a barbershop there.
15
Also Terrence Jonesa and Terrance Ross from Jefferson , Mike Dunleavy (Jesuit), Kevin Love (Lake Oswego)

What's remarkable is the breadth of basketball talent. I can think of four Seattle high schools that have alums on active NBA rosters: Rainier Beach, Franklin, Garfield, Seattle Prep. And if you want to go beyond city limits, Marvin Williams of the Utah Jazz is from Bremerton. And Rodney Stuckey of the Detroit Pistons is from Covington.

I'll take tacky @11's word on "...also Bellarmine Prep and Curtis in Tacoma all have guys in the NBA."

Forgive me if I'm missing any area schools.

I'll also accept tacky's climate explanation for this phenomenon. I'll be interested to see what explanations, if any, Mr. Swide has.

P.S. As someone who plays hoops strictly for fun, I was fortunate enough to be coached by one of Franklin's assistant coaches. My pre-game shooting ritual is a variation on a ritual he taught me. And occasionally I'll ask him about Aaron Brooks and Peyton Siva. Jason Terry was before his time.

@12 I didn't forget about Terrance WIlliams; I always liked him as a player and thought he should still be in the league, but he's been in the D league for a few years and Siva played on the Pistons as recently as last month. He's on assignment with a D-league team, but he's still getting paid by the Pistons, so that's why I counted him and not Williams, but we can call it 2.5 each.

I actually looked up NBA players from those NYC boroughs because I didn't think that stat (those boroughs only having 2 nba players) was accurate, but it is. Mostly because the Jazz cut Jamal Tinsley in Nov. and Russ Smith stayed at Louisville another year. Also because Sebastian Telfair and his cousin Steph Marbury are out of the league now.
There are more NBA players from some of the other boroughs too though; Kemba Walker from Harlem, Ron Artest from Queens, Ben Gordon from Mt. Vernon.

@16 -Tacky is right, Isaiah Thomas went to Curtis and I think Avery Bradley went to Bellarmine before he transfered to Findley Prep in Vegas for his senior year. I can't think of other Seattle area H.S.'s with active players. Snohomish had Jon Brockman but I haven't seen him on a roster in a few years.
18
I'm quite sure you could post ANY fact about Seattle sports and Constant could honestly say, "I had no idea."
19
@17 Brockman's playing in France last I heard.

Please wait...
