This is the kind of movie that is only possible because of CGI. Airliner movies were always pretty dorky, because it was obvious the exteriors were fake and the interiors on a soundstage instead of in a fuselage. Now that technology exists to make exciting exteriors with burning & tattered planes, studios feel compelled to make movies using that tech. Of course, the vast majority of action movies have horrendous scripts, regardless of the setting. CGI has just expanded the settings for shitty movies.
