Did you read a different story than the one you linked to on the UW cherry tree story? They aren't being transplanted, they were cut down because they're old and potentially sick, and the architecture dept. will make them into furniture. They will plant saplings to replace them.
2
@1 i think that was a joke? Healthier as furniture?

3
i demand the publication of the "gay mafia" nicknames of the majority at The Stranger (e.g. Dan "the Cardinal" Savage)

http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2…
4
I feel sorry for that family, but I'd feel far sorrier for the families of anyone who might of been killed driving on the same roads as Mr. Mendoza-Pascual.
5
Transplanted? Come on have some respect for the UW arboriculitre and don't say stupid shit like brown rot infested cherries are being transplanted.
6
@1,2
I had questions in my mind about the transplantation as well. Not very clear. Perhaps it's good to know that the person writing the Morning News is a jokester.
7
The ACLU doesn't have the power to "file an injunction". Only a judge can do that.
8
@1 and @7: Whew, thanks - fixed.
9
Hunger strikers: Deport Those Motherfuckers Already.
10
@8 thank you! and don't feel bad. Slog writers have been providing us with non-truths for a long time. Makes you wonder why some of us still care to point them out.
11
Jr. Bumboy Herz was too busy canonizing a bank robber to get its facts straight.

i get a chuckle out of "the architecture department". the "medical department", the "forestry department", the "art department", the "chemistry department". funny.

the architecture SCHOOL has a huge shop in gould hall, and a furniture class every year - better there than the woodchopper.

these aren't the ones in the quad, either.
13
wood CHIPPER. fucking auto correct, woodchippers are a thing.
14
@4 -- I'd feel really sorry for anyone who was injured on the same road as Mr. Mendoza-Pascual, too, considering he was _parked_ when the police cited him. It sounds more like a "DWB" arrest than a DUI to me.
15
@14: unless the police had spotted him, and he pulled over and killed the engine in the hope that parking the vehicle would save him (which would explain why the police got there before his wife.)

Nevertheless, that alone is no justification for holding him in solitary. Unless Ansel is withholding certain details of the story to make his subject look suitably innocent, which he would never ever ever ever do. Ever.
16
@15 - There's no mention in the linked coverage that the police had spotted him driving erratically, only that they ticketed him for driving while he wasn't in fact driving, so I doubt Ansel is withholding anything he knows. There's far too much DWB these days, driven by the conservatives' fear of brown people taking "our" jobs (that would be the jobs brown people do because they're the lowest paid work and white people won't do them -- witness Alabama's crops rotting in the fields a couple of years ago). And, of course, I realize that you would never ever ever ever snark at anyone who writes for Slog. Ever.

Don't know how it works in Seattle but in Chicago, you may not be in the driver's seat of a running car, even in park, while intoxicated.
18
"They're voting for a new US puppet president for the first time since 2009 today."

Way to parrot the Taliban. Maybe you should get back to canonizing the innocent bank robber - sorry, beloved chef.

Please wait...
