Eh. Don't worry about Salon. Most fans know that this is just fantasy. Look at Twilight. There were all sorts of articles about how it was really an awful metaphor for this or that but there were far more just discussing it as what it was—entertainment. The fans still had a blast. GoT falls into the same category. It doesn't have much intellectual value and you can see it as harmful if you turn your head to the side and squint, but the bottom line is that it's a way to shut your brain off after a long day at work. As long as you know it's not real, you're fine.

Everyone dies in every episode forever.

I for one am glad that Peter Dinklage's character does so very well in this upcoming season

The Salon article's pretty dumb. The show's set in a medieval society in which people hold medieval values. Duh. I think it does a pretty good job of countering the Disney-style Shiny Castle Knights 'n' Princesses image of medieval times, showing you really really wouldn't want to live back then.

Salon's article is stupid click bait. Anyway, Martin is a hard core Democrat.

Hodor!

Sadly, the Salon writer seems to be confusing fantasy as a genre with the concept of fantasy as a dream you *want* to happen. Nobody sensible watching GoT or reading the books would want to live in Westeros-- it's a crapsack world, for fuck's sake.

Wasn't that kind of the point? That the people in charge were so busying jockeying for power and backstabbing each other that they missed the real problems? That Westeros is a horrible place to live unless you're a Lannister or rich?

And hell at least Martin acknowledges that women and gays exist. God knows that more than some writers do.

Yeah, like others have said- no one actually wants Westeros to happen. It's clearly terrible. That's part of the point. In addition, people watch GoT because they grow too attached to the characters to stop watching. I personally wish I'd never started, given some of the awful things on the show, but it's too late now.

@8 "That the people in charge were so busying jockeying for power and backstabbing each other that they missed the real problems?"

That's the secret plot of about 50% of the chapters.

I watch GoT with my Republican brother (his wife has decreed it to be soft porn and she not having it!) and one of the most fun bonuses is watching Tea-bro squirm during the very hot gay sex scenes. At least he doesn't stare at the floor anymore after 3 seasons. That's progress, right?

@10 That's the overall major theme of the book. All the warfare doesn't matter. "Winter is Coming" and will kill off most of the world. Eerily similar to all the war going on in the world to day and yet we ignore our common threat: climate change.

Well reading the books might well ruin the show for me. The saga is brilliant for the way it subverts all kind of tropes, especially when it comes to female characters.

Characters like Catelyn Stark, who have their own voice and POV in the books are boiled down in the series to the very tropes they were intended to subvert. Catelyn was a mother who did not stay silently in the background, and Sansa Stark is not a mere damsel in distress -she's more of a badass in disguise.

The showrunner are those who ruined the show, I tell you! :p
