I saw a young woman wearing a punky denim jacket with a stich-on of Johnny Cash giving the finger on the back of it go OUT OF HER WAY to avoid stepping in the No Yuppie Zone today, which confused me, I guess for a number of reasons.
I don't know her reasons, but I think I would instinctively avoid stepping on chalk on the sidewalk so I wouldn't smudge it.
This may date back to when I lived in residential neighborhoods where local kids would draw stuff on chalk on the pavement. I don't want to be mean and mess up some kid's drawing.
@11 - ahhh, like the all-encompassing "hipster" epithet. Has the internet diversified our affectations so greatly we've replaced our derisive nomenclature with catch-alls that essentially mean "anyone but people I like"? Also, does half of what I just typed sound like it's from an Evergreen course catalog?
I'm not sure about the "soon now". The 'so' and the 'n_w' are pretty clear, though.
Does anyone under the age of 40 use the word yuppie?
