Wait a second, if the Stranger is going to make a big deal because a lesbian judge got sworn in, then why was SLOG completely silent during the election about Ed Murray, Seattle's first openly gay mayor? When he married his boyfriend, he got a one sentence mention in the morning news, where Seattle Times gave him a few paragraphs.
@1 They gave Ed a lot of props for getting gay marriage through Olympia, but other than that, you're right. They have seemed rather muted about hizzoner's landmark election.
Nevertheless, Huzzah for Hon. Mary Yu!
I sat in on one of her trials. She works painstakingly hard to be fair and get it right. Very impressive judge. Her historic first gay marriage in WA is a nice plus as well.
Oh @3 you dumbass, its a stipend not wages. I'm all for higher wages when they are actually wages. It is a rediculosly low figure for a stipend, and should be updated sometime this century. Courts are already underfunded and there is no pollitical will to give them more money.
Congratulations to Justice Yu. I didn't really see this coming from Inslee, I always pictured him as the aging fratboy kind of democrat, but he's done a few progressive things that have wadded up a lot of panties on the right wing.
Best real pun ever. Wouldn't it be cool to get married by a judge named Mary Yu? I loved our officiant when I got married, but Yu would have been my second choice, based on her name alone.
Name pun aside, she is a great judge and this is great news. Congrats!
Timmy Eyman can't be too happy. Johnson was his favorite Supreme Court justice. He's getting replaced by a judge that declared one of Timmy's initiatives unconstitutional.
The Seattle Times reports that Danford Grant's trial will begin jury selection Monday with a different judge. That trial may go on for months so Mary Yu would not be available since she is now a Supreme Court Justice. Thanks goodness they are going ahead on schedule. I hope they choose a judge who is fair and square.
Nevertheless,
Huzzah for Hon. Mary Yu!

Great appointment for the court regardless.
