Best part is I know where to avoid spending my money thanks to these signs. Just as I wouldn't help an "Uncle Ruckus" black man who supported the KKK, I would never support a small business that wants a higher MW.

And it's worth noting that none of these businesses had anything stopping them paying 15/hour right now...

@1 Ah it's nice to see Boswell return to fill up the Slog comments page.
Property Rights Uber Alles!
3
@1 I thought you were moving to Mountain View if $15/hr became a thing.
4
@3
I'm moving next year to somewhere less insane, like Texas or Colorado or maybe even Spokane. I would love to see 15Now try to push things in Eastern Washington...
5
@3 - I'm sure he's still planning to do so, but gradually, over the next seven years.
6
I pretty much knew Molly Moon and Cupcake Royale would be on board. The anti-15 movement has pretty much been a sausage fest.
7
Sweet! (get it?) I'm happy to spend a little bit of my dough at businesses openly rallying around the $15 compromise. Not at Lost Lake or Terra Plata though. Meinert and Morgan can kiss my sugar-fed ass good bye after all the anti-employee shit they said on FB and in public.
8
Correction: Murphy. Tara Murphy. Of the my employees can suck it rant on FB. https://www.facebook.com/tamara.murphy.3…

9
Shouldn't that be a sign for "12 for Seattle" in today's wages?

The compromise is $22 in 2022 with a $21 training wage and $15 now with zero exemptions.
10
Is this the beginning of the $15 Now blue eagle-ish program ?

Proud NRA member, we do our part! indeed.

No kidding, that Tara Murphy thinks her employees are garbage. I don't get why she hires them if she has such a low opinion of them. Somebody holding a gun to her head?

Kind of seems like lining up to support the Mayor's deal is lining up against 15Now's Charter Amendment 20. Because waiting 7 years for $15/hr. is good enough for some, I guess.

@4: It's sweet that you're thinking of moving here, and we'd love to have you, really we would, but.... We've got a bunch of enviro laws which amount to uncompensated government takings. Also, public schools are pretty good, and public schools are just legalized larceny. The pollen count here is really high and will aggravate your allergies. I really think you should go with Texas over Colorado.

Yes, since they don't have to pay $15 just yet, why not put a sign in the window.

Why not put up a sign that says "free breast augmentation for all" or "Gold Bullion...Now!"?
14
@4 You said Mountain View, and I expect you to move there in the next month or two. As you promised.

And I actually like environmental laws and wish they were enforced with jail time instead of fines.
16
It's like a "White Citizens' Council" sign in the south in the 60s -- a way to prevent people from attacking the business.

If you don't have a "15" sign then you will be picketed, or worse.

17
@11 its about "who's a good progressive" vs "who's too militant". This signals who backs the democratic party and can be counted on for campaign donations, and who is 'too extreme'. Sawant and SA are a threat both politically and fiducially.
18
Molly moons and cupcake royale can pay their employees 15$ any time they want!!!
19
@15 Yes, dear, you're very complex and free thinking, like a snowflake.
20
@19
No, most libertarians are actually pro-environmental regulation, as the environment is everyone's private property. We are also against right-to-work laws and anti-big business for the most part. It is just that certain people are absolutely ignorant about what libertarianism is.

I love how the same people who would point and laugh if someone who says all socialist are like Stalin (and rightly so) are the same people who in the very next breath say all libertarians are like Rand Paul or Ayn Rand.

Seattle liberals are essentially proud of their ignorance.
21
When I first moved to Seattle in 1980 there were signs in windows of bars that said, "Cooks not served here, scab beer".
22
Anna, you know why you don't see me those signs? Because very few small businesses agree.

So, your small victory here may very well end up as your Phyrric Victory in the long run.

the average hourly wage for a high school teach in America is 25.44 an hr. in Washington state. that is based on 2080 hrs a year. Most teacher spend a few hours at night grading papers, planning the following day, calling parents. much more then your average 40 hour a week job.
I grew up with a parent and many family members as teachers.
They work way harder then most. have to continue to get education for pay raises. stay late and do after school activities for extra pay.
that said why do people working for minimum wage jobs deserver 15 dollars an hour?
maybe we should take all that extra money (of 5.68 an hr) and give it back to the teachers.
25
Does the sign in the window reflect the wages their employees are getting? That is the important question. I would definitely patronize those stores, restaurants, etc. if I knew that is what the sign is telling me.
26
You couldn't walk around the corner to really see if that sign was actually at cupcake royale, huh?
27
Hey I'm Cool, this is for you! Or is it from you for us? http://www.salon.com/2014/04/25/the_glam…
28
The arguments against raising the minimum wage are the exact same arguments the confederacy used against emancipation. The cotton economy will be destroyed if I have to pay people to pick the crop!

Remember how the economy tanked and all the small businesses folded up the last 10 times they increased the minimum wage? Yeah me neither.

But keep telling yourself that forcing business to pay people what their labor is actually worth is evil.

29
I don't think I like the Stranger anymore. Also, seriously what is to stop Molly from paying her 2 employees working $15NOW. It's a totally different business model than small restaurants. So dumb.
30
I remember when I used to like the Stranger.
31
Calling on a single business to pay higher wages would put them at a competitive disadvantage. Those businesses that want to do better for their employees but stay in business are acting logically when calling for raising the wage for everyone. They also know they'll get more business when people are paid more. Doesn't seem hypocritical at all.
32
@31- by that logic we should exempt manufacturers and other types of companies whose products are sold outside of Seattle. Do you agree with that, and if not why?
33
@12
I disagree. I have a Texas address (for when I have time off in Texas) and I can state that we really don't need him. We have plenty of homegrown ones like him already. Altho I can't say I want him in Colorado either as the fiance and me are looking to relocate there. Probably up around Nederland since I lived there for a while and liked it up there. And if you think the pollen count in CO is high you really don't want to be around Juniper when it is pollinating which, based on allergies, is almost year round in various parts of the state.

Please wait...
