Seriously, Herman Melville may be the most respected and gifted American writer save for Mark Twain. Moby Dick, a masterpiece is only the beginning. Read Billy Budd and Benito Cereno. The former is so good, it's been made into an opera. The latter is a magnificent account of a slave revolt. Peruse Bartleby, the Scrivner. Wow, what an extraordinary short story. Melville is even a fine poet. His pre-Civil War verse is among the finest.
