This is ridiculous. People and their love affairs with their precious adult-toy guns.

One of two things will happen - people will yawn and accept these shootings, like drunk drivers killing people, or enough political social pressure will build up to overcome the stranglehold of the NRA. I'm hoping it's the latter and I think it's moving in that direction, although many folks still guard their stupid arsenals better than they do their children.

The problem is usually Americans. Resident aliens with children should start "GoFundMe" projects so their relocation can be paid for by the US citizens who support the factors that commonly lead to these school shootings. Lifelong American residents have no clue how toxic their culture is. Ignorami will always look to the really violent countries to say "well at least we're not _____" but never to the many less violent countries to say "Why can't we be more like _______?"

Oregon Public Broadcasting is reporting just a single confirmed death at this point, that of the shooter. It's the second largest high school in the state and tomorrow was to be the last day of the year.

No, they don't. One New Mexico family was mostly wiped out by the 15-year-old boy because the patriarch thought video games were more harmful than semi-automatic weapons. He didn't lock up the weapons. It wasn't "Call of Duty" that the boy killed the family with.

A 12-year-old Nevada boy killed a popular middle-school teacher and wounded two classmates with a Ruger his parents left lying around where he could get at it.

I'm very surprised there still aren't enough bereaved angry people to lobby for restrictions like mandatory gun safety and handling courses, legal responsibility if a firearm owner's weapon is used in a crime, et cetera.

@1

It's the former. If you haven't noticed, people have been accepting these shootings for years & they keep coming. And the more of them we have, the more desensitized people become.

@2

You've got that right. It's not the NRA, it's Americans. The whole thing could stop tomorrow if the majority of Americans agreed that the goddamn killing devices be banned. But they won't and never will.

America is dumb.

@2, I'm a lifelong American citizen who understands how toxic our culture is. Too many of us are chained to outdated ideals. Too many think we still live in the Wild West, too many think we have straps on our boots to pick ourselves up by in a world that isn't the blank slate our forefathers settled, and too many Christians feel that anything that isn't Christian is a threat to their way of life.
We're over stressed, overworked, underpaid, and increasingly disconnected. We are pitted against each other from the moment we experience life outside our parents protection. We go to schools that are more interested in propagandizing us: drugs are bad, communism is bad-oh wait, communism fell, now terrorists (who used to get arms and training from us to fight commies) are bad, and anyone we don't like is a terrorist, even if the most harm they cause is broken windows, blocked traffic, and saying bad things (often true) about our overlords donors.
Our system ads new rules and harsher punishments almost daily. There's a pill with lengthy lists of side effects (including violent outbursts) for everything. Value is measured in money not quality or function.
And people wonder why we go mad.

The gun maker's holidays. The more people that die, the more money they make. Then they pay off their politicians. It all works so smoothly. Why would it change?

@Tingleyfeeln: Let's not forget the tireless conservative movement that has been filling our ignorant, angst-ridden American minds with toxic bullshit for 50 years, starting with AM radio and eventually building its own cable TV channel.

In the "First Reports Are Always Wrong" department, The Oregonian reported
8:57 a.m.: Police are reporting that there were three shooters; two fled the scene. One of the shooters was caught at a church across the street.
10
Lower taxes and more guns should solve this, and all other problems, amiright?
11
Looks like we have two ways to die: a psycho with a gun or the next major weather disaster. And it's all because of "freedom". (Please note the sarcasm)
12
@11, your joke has the ring of truth to it. The response from our "leaders" to the mounting disasters of climate change and gun violence has been disturbingly similar. Do nothing, deny the obvious, and immediately shout down anyone who presents the smallest grain of truth.
13
Cue the gun nuts!

And remember: your freedom to be alive stops at barrel of their penis-substitute bang bang toy.
14
@13 At this rate, the gun nuts want to prevent the carpal tunnel syndrome that no doubt would result from copying/pasting their apologia across hundreds of forums, so they'll have healthy fingers when it's their time to do some human-hunting.
15
Wait, white kids shooting each other?! Okay, now you have my attention. Thought you were talking about the hundreds of black males killing one another every year, which we thankfully ignore.
16
@15 - how do you know the shooter is white? That school is almost half Latino.
17
Sad: dead kid looks to be about 8 yrs old.

"Wait, white kids shooting each other?! Okay, now you have my attention. Thought you were talking about the hundreds of black males killing one another every year, which we thankfully ignore."

I agree that black men kill black men with guns more often than white men kill white men with guns but I'm not sure y u think Charles disagrees and I'm not sure how reducing school shootings by making guns less easy to buy would fail to reduce street shootings

I think maybe u'r not even trying to make an actionable point beyond "black people suck". blackness is already fairly criminalized, for black males, so u can chill with the campaign

Please wait...
