Don't be such an alarmist. It was only 400 snakes, and many of them were dead or mostly dead.

Something tells me there was some nepotism in the hiring of that sex offender on the ferry.

Getting ready for the Germany vs Argentina cup tournament? Their fans haven't been together in a stadium since, oh...the Nuremberg rally!

My favorite Bonnie Pointer song is still "Tie Me To A Tree (Handcuff Me)" aka "Free Me From My Freedom". Seriously it's a great tune, those bass turns just make your feet turn with them whether you want them to or not. And that lyric!

I'm going to Disney Land next month. I plan on not losing any fingertips.

I wonder what that retired cop did while directing traffic to elicit a complaint. Probably refused to help with an unrelated matter.

@5 - Nobody plans to lose a fingertip.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is out with a new report documenting government failures in recognizing and responding to growing threats from the radical right.
...Cliven Bundy's faceoff with Bureau of Land Management agents and Las Vegas police at his ranch in southern Nevada in April has "invigorated" an extremist movement that has exploded since President Barack Obama was elected, growing from 150 groups in 2008 to more than 1,000 last year, the SPLC's report said.

"We've never seen growth like that in 30-plus years of monitoring groups on the radical right," said Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the center in Montgomery, Alabama...

SPLC links are currently not working.

Okay, so there's going to be a job opening with the ferries, right?

I love snakes, they're great, relatively inexpensive and low-maintenance pets. But very few people can care for a collection this size. It's just a ton of work. This guy got in over his head, and his poor animals suffered.

Actor Dave Legeno, who played the villain werewolf Fenrir Greyback in the “Harry Potter” movies, found dead in Death Valley.

@11: I disagree (that they're low-maintenance). I've visited homes with a pet python and they had to keep the room temperature uncomfortably high, but if you like that and you consider shopping for and feeding live mice to them low maintenance - to each his own, I guess.

However, that they are not in their element and kept in cages, which is cruel.

@13 I agree with you.

Re: 9 (new study of right-wing militias), the SPLC website is back up. Summary here, .pdf of report here (27 pp., <1MB).

Deacy was putting on his old uniform and directing traffic? Pfeh, unless there was some particular harm done I say let him off easy. Tell him not to do it again, give him a few months' probation, and find him a community service group for him to run with if he feels the need to make the neighborhood a safer place.

@16: Agree
