Pam Oliver's position is basically one that is pointless, but for some reason stations broadcasting NFL games are obsessed with female on field reporters who basically just report nothing of note, and typically just quote players on the cliches they spout before games.

They are really just eye candy, designed specifically to capture a certain demographic. Which really just brings up the tired, unresolvable debate on whether a company is supporting a social ideal or responding to one that already exists since it has a legal obligaton to make as much money as possible.

Is there a less sympathetic figure than a tea partier who puts himself in danger of prosecution by helping to orchestrate a despicable and low down dirty trick, who then can't handle the pressure and kills himself? @9: Yes, people who have no empathy for a suicide victim's family and friends. At least the NYT had the decency to write "No one can say for sure why someone takes his life" in their despicable tea-party bashing spin.

@3: To be fair, those are the jobs that women can get in broadcast football. They are sometimes also real reporters, sometimes not, but it's a pretty tough glass ceiling.

It was a largely positive piece about the guy. The only bashing there was was of the fucking assholes that decided to surreptitiously videotape a disabled woman in order to astroturf a rumor about her husband's marriage.

Uhh, the Costa Concordia didn't kill 32 people. Captain Francesco Schettino killed 32 people through egregious stupidity.

To say otherwise is like saying the car killed a pedestrian when it was driven by a drunk driver or a gun killed someone when it was in the hands of a homicidal lunatic.

Re On the field female reporters, I believe it is driven a little more by age than blonde hair---Erin Andrews is kinda brunette and she's in her mid-late 30's; in a few years, they will push Erin out for a younger gal.

@ 7 - Yes! Thank you. It is amazing how most people are ignorant of the proper anatomical terms for female genitalia. And it's confusing when people talk about - for example - taking pictures or molds! of their vaginas - How's that done?

But the Japanese word used is for "vagina," and the Japanese artists calls her work "vagina art" in Japanese, and so in this case...I'm kind of not feeling your indignation. Keep on it, please, though. I agree that the distinction is important and that too many people (including sometimes me) don't remember it. While you're at it, though, can you also fight for "humanity" rather than "mankind"? I never seem to get any damn backup on that.
