No. There are plenty of other countries in the world who can provide a reasonable expectation that your airplane won't get shot down in or near their airspace on the way to/from the event.

Oh, and where you can be gay without fearing violence.
3
it's a tough one: they're tipping into full-blown paranoid fascism already, pulling the Cup will just cement their sense of victimhood.

then again, why reward bad behavior.

To paraphrase John Stewart on the Daily Show, just leave it where it is because why would you want to try and deal with the one group more corrupt and thuggish than Russia (FIFA)? They deserve each other. If Russia continues on its current trajectory, hopefully all the sensible countries will boycott the games after Russia and FIFA spends all their money on trying to get the damn thing going.

If what you're looking for is a way to symbolically "punish" Russia without jeopardizing Europe's oil supply, I suppose you could do a lot worse than this.
6
Removing a sporting event to punish a country for a heinous act they may or may not have been directly or indirectly involved in, when we as a nation failed to take responsibility for the same act against Iran would be the height of hypocrisy. I'm speaking of course of the reprehensible downing of Iran Air 655, an inexcusable atrocity resulting from some mix of aggressive overreaction and willful incompetence, for which we paid money but never admitted blame. That's what passes for our leadership on the world stage, which is why no one listens when we castigate Russia. Don't get me wrong - Russia's aiding and abetting the rebels, the rebels aren't exactly acting innocent about the whole thing, and the whole thing is reprehensible.

Unfortunately, so are we.

Fortunately, whether to proceed with the World Cup in Russia is up to FIFA, which would appear to have the kind of moral authority appropriate to the fucked up world these events are transpiring within - none.

Hosting the World Cup almost seems like a punishment.
8
@5 nothing "symbolic" about billions of dollars.

Grab all posts pre-Sochi.

.replace("Olympics", "World Cup")

10
FIFA should just make sure that Russia's bracket has both Germany and Brazil in it. :-)
11
Oh, I think Russia should definitely host the World Cup. And every team in the world should boycott it in disgust over both Russia and FIFA. Let them spend the millions of dollars on a party and no one shows up.
12
FIFA's rules explicitly forbid national and international politics to influence the World Cup. Any nation can enter, any nation can bid to host. It's not up to anyone else to decide.
13
Let putin spend a bajillion $ to host the event and then have the world boycott it because of his racist, homophobic stupidity. russia is heading down the wrong path if they want to recognized as a humane society.

Please wait...
