"a guy who was playing what looked like the neck of a bass guitar that had no body (what was that thing, anyway?)"—Sounds like it was probably a Chapman Stick.
Does anyone else find the giant pits where only photographers are allowed access to annoying? I was "4th row" for the Replacements, but still a mile away from Tommy Stinson due to the gaping maw meant for security and photographers.
And it's not unique to Bumbershoot. Even at venues without a special pit, photographers will weasel their way up front to snap a zillion shots of the band. This was the case in Neumo's at the CHBP and the recent Strand of Oaks show at the Tractor.
Believe it or not, those of us who paid for the show and are fans of the band don't want to look at your camera screen for half the set, especially as you're scrolling through to make sure that you got THE SHOT.
My favorite part of this weekend was a little known and not advertised music producer workshop that took place each day at Bumbershoot at Vera Project called FLIP. The local music producers demonstrated their music and tools. It was a great opportunity to meet, learn from, and talk to some known and some new seattle music producers.
My only day was Monday and I too made a major effort to see as many of the 38 music acts as possible.
Favorites were Real Estate with their chimey guitar arpeggios, HFTRRaff refreshing country-rock, Bad Things (Shaun
White can play), Rose Windows' psychedelia, Campfire OK, Current Swell's raucus Amerirock, and I rather liked Twin Shadows' George Lewis' DonHenley meets Rick Springfield act.
I like the stadium arangement except for the mainstage/south grandstands echo chamber. Glad there is no evacuation after shows as before. Keeps the crowd down outside the stadium. Smaller Starbucks deck and the beer garden is back forward at the Mural. Good.

Oh c'mon. All Hail The Documentation, The Coverage, The Reporting. Has been spiraling out of control for several decades. Faster and faster.
